Fiddler From the 1890s Plays His Violin (Sound Remastered)
0:00 Introduction
1:18 Charles Ross Taggart Performing
This is Charles Ross Taggart (19 March 1871, Washington, D.C. - 4 July 1953, Kents Hill, Maine) an American comedian and folklorist who appeared all over North America as "The Man From Vermont" and "The Old Country Fiddler" from 1895 to 1938. He grew up in Topsham, Vermont, and later lived in Newbury for many years in a house he called "Elmbank," which overlooked the railroad depot.
Recorded with Lee de Forest's Phonofilm process in 1923, this technology ushered in the beginning of sound-on-film. Eventually, Hollywood studios would create their own sound-on-film systems that most of us are familiar with today.
Audio has been remastered.
Mr. Taggart was part of a traveling show called the Chautauqua circuit, where he would perform folk music on his violin, sing, play the piano, do ventriloquism, and tell outlandish stories that supposedly took place in rural New England. Taggart retired from performing from this circuit in 1938.

It was really fascinating and bone chilling to learn about the assasination of the president Abraham Lincoln from a person who directly witnessed it. From the era where he lived, he might not know that there would be internet and youtube and people across the world would get to see him and his emotions in the end acted so normally as it is. But, today in a world where knowing that people across the world will see it, many act indecently in the internet. This is like a time travel for me to witness the video.

As someone from early 2000's, I never imagined that I would get to see nearly a century old footage, showing a man born nearly 2 century before just a few decades after the Napoleon saying about the american civil war where the great Abraham Lincoln was still alive. So, they lived to witness so many major historical events directly that we learn from history books. Fascinating!!!

The Civil War was a stupid war fought by stupid people. The moral injuries of this war continue to harm this nation. Both sides did evil things in this war, but the Union was arguably more brutal, especially to the innocent civilians.

As a former Civil War Living History actor, I often asked people their birth date. Then I would ask them to go back 100 years to that time in America to realize what they would have seen and experienced. Many would have seen the opening of the frontier and the closing of it. Gone from horse and wagon to automobiles. Fly through the sky and sail beneath the sea. History became very condensed when thought of this way and how close to the past we are.

THESE were what Blacks called "House N__g__ers" They were Mulattos who worked in the house during slavery, as opposed to working outside in the blazing hot sun. They were often well-spoken & educated, (probably by their master's wife or children.) (This preferential treatment of Mulattos borne resentment amongst Blacks (ESPECIALLY THE WOMEN) who viewed them as "Thinking they were BETTER than the others who worked out in the fields."
