These girls sang as one. Musical perfection. Musical genius, is the sound of Sergio Mendez and Brazil ‘66. Sergio, like Stevie, was born with the happiness gene. Just an amazing assemblage of artists.

Left, Lani Hall. The one on the right is Bibi Vogel, the later ensembles had Karen Phillipp orJanis Hansen, I could never tell them apart. But all could sing! And all looked ravishing in their miniskirts! (a fashion introduced in 1965 for those who were born after 2000....😁)

Je mesure la chance que j’ai eu d’assister à 2 concerts de FZ. Il savait s’entourer le bougre. N’est pas Duke qui veut. Et même si le combo est réduit la musique et l’esprit sont intacts. Dire qu’aujourd’hui hormis les fans et ils ont les cheveux qui grisonnent et à la marge quelques jazzeux manquant toutefois de cette insolence qui caractérisait son œuvre, FZ est comme qui dirait condamné aux oubliettes de l’histoire de la musique, une relique que l’on ressort de temps à autre , alors qu’il s’agit d’un des musiciens les plus géniaux de l’époque contemporaine.

What does it say about Zappa that all these amazing musicians, who had giant reputations before they joined his band, are now most well-known for their tenures with him?

Sergio was pissed when Lonnie decided to quit the band and go solo and be with Herb Alpert. Can’t say as I blame him. What a loss to his band.

(gotta feel sorry for any guitarist who’s told, “Play this like Zappa did.” Can’t be done)

This version with Janis and Lani was better than the later version. Sergio fired everyone in the late 1960s, only Lani returned at Herb’s insistence. The two women’s voices were so close it was hard to tell which of them was singing. Mark II of the group with seven members were not as appealing and ended in late 1960s.

Some time after this, Sergio fired Janis and Lani and the three guys … Herb told him to rehire Lani, which happened, but they never sounded the same. Later Lani left when she married Herb. There was a different female voice, and four new guys who never achieved their previous success.
