    Can you make an STL into a sketch? Once I make the mesh to a solid, then refine the image, I end up with a nice solid, but I can't figure out how to make it so that I can constraint the lines to add the dimensions and end up with a working sketch. This way I can put the dimensions into a spreadsheet and make the part parametric. Can you help?

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před 14 dny

      Hi @tonyp4894...as far as I know this can't be done. The only way you'd be able to get a sketch is by bringing the STL into FreeCAD and tracing it. Depending on the model this can be a bit of a task, but not impossible. But generating a parametric sketch out of an STL isn't really possible as far as I know. That would be quite an amazing feature though. RG

      I'm sorry that you're having problems with the software. However, there is nothing wrong with the software it works just fine. The procedure that I show in the video works without issue. Now having said that I will agree that CAD has a significant learning curve and requires patience and time. This is true of FreeCAD, and all other CAD programs. I started with Fusion 360 and it took me a long time to get the hang of it. I've been using FreeCAD for a while and it's great if you're a hobbyist as you don't have to worry about licensing. I would suggest not to give up on it. If you put in the time, you'll get the hang of it. RG

  • @gartnl
    @gartnl Před měsícem

    Actually this is a wrong. The Z-offset is the offset you reach with the paper plus ! the thickness of the paper. Your Z-0 is still above the buildpate with the method you show. A sticky note is 0.1 mm. There is no true relation between ABL and Z-offset. ABL creates a profile of the bed that is applied to all layers. Z-offset merely denotes the distance between the point where the sensor triggers and the point of your nozzle. Both are independant.

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před měsícem

      Did you actuall watch the whole video? I explain all of this in the video...one of the first things I go into is the fact that the Z offset is independent of the mesh created by the ABL. You're right that the Z offset and the ABL are two different things but hey work together to enable better and more accurate prints.

    • @gartnl
      @gartnl Před měsícem

      @@CreatewithTech yes, I did watch the video. And I was surprised that you did not add the paper thickness to your offset.

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před měsícem

      @@gartnl When using the paper thickness method, you typically don't need to add the paper thickness to the Z offset value. The Z offset should be set to the distance between the nozzle and the print bed when the paper just barely catches under the nozzle with slight resistance. What value does adding the thickness of the paper add? The way I explain it in the video always works and achieves great prints.

    • @gartnl
      @gartnl Před měsícem

      @@CreatewithTech Z=0 means the nozzle is on the surface. But notepaper is on average 0.1 mm. So the paper method leaves the nozzle 0.1 mm above the surface if you don't add the thickness. I've allways had to add the paper thickness to get consistent results with different, esp smaller, nozzle sizes. When layer thickness is .15 or lower the .1 mm error becomes a problem.

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před měsícem

      @@gartnl Hmmm...OK I hear you...but we're kind of splitting hairs here. I didn't mention it in the video, but it is possible to use baby stepping to deal with minor issues or inconsistencies that may come up. That would work and may be required in certain circumstances. I probably should have mentioned that in the video. Generally speaking though I've never had any issues with the method I discuss in the video. Also, the video is made for people who are completely new to this. I tried to give a method that works with a typical 0.4mm nozzle that comes with most printers. I already covered a lot of details and I didn't want to confuse, especially given that this does work in most instances. But I can see how that 0.1mm can be problematic with smaller nozzle sizes. Thanks

    Hey, is it possible to initiate the bed leveling (G29) before waiting for the bed to warm up (M190 S)? Would it heat the bed while leveling? That would save some minuets if it works.

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před měsícem

      Yes, it's possible but not advisable. Warming up the bed first makes the leveling more accurate (at least that is the general consensus). If you level while the bed is warming up the ABL may not be as accurate since the heat causes a slight expansion of the bed which might be missed, thereby making the bed leveling less accurate. RG

    Ok, so everyone else has obviously watched something about setting up FreeCAD that I've missed and can't find. I've just downloaded FreeCAD and opened it stock standard. First of all your video shows a FreeCAD with a lot more icons than mine, and when I click New under File menu, I don't get a screen saying Select Features and there is no option to create a new block nor a new sketch. So, within 2 minutes of watching your video I'm stumped.

    • @CreatewithTech
      @CreatewithTech Před měsícem

      Hello @dennisbartlett7005...I'm sorry about the confusion. FreeCAD is set up with different work benches, depending on what you want to design. When you first download and open the application it will open with the "Start" work bench. You can see this at the very top field where it says "Start". The field is a pull down menu that reveals all the other work benches available to you. If you're designing for 3D printing you'll typically be using the "Part Design" work bench. Choose that and you'll see how the menu changes and you'll get all the icons. At this point you can go to File>New and choose that. At this point you'll see the option in the panel below to Create body and then Create sketch. I hope this helps. RG

    I don't understand the formula to figure out the new rotation distance. It doesn't make sense to me. If we get "x" amount with "y" rotation then to get "z" amount which rotation "r" we need. That would be "z" times "y" divided by "x". Right?

    • @elleryfg7853
      @elleryfg7853 Před 2 měsíci

      Nevermind. I got it. The formula is correct. Basically if we are extruding less than what we need with x rotation distance we need to reduce that number so the system knows the axis is moving less per each rotation and then to get to a certain movement on the axis the motor needs to rotate more.

      Hi Sandra...thank you for your kind words. It's appreciated. I'm sorry that the video didn't help you much. Which part were you having an issue with? If you encountered a problem converting an STL into a solid the truth is it doesn't always work well, regardless of the CAD application. Whether it works or not depends on the complexity of the STL. The simpler the model the better. Also, which version of FreeCAD were you using? In the video I believe I was using the Realthunder version which is optimized more for this kind of stuff, although the official release should be able to do it as well. Anyway, hopefully you'll find a way to accomplish what you need to. Thanks. RG

    Hi Buddy, I am really finding it difficult to do threaded holes through a curved surface. The scenario is a piece of pipe with 5mm wall, 50mm o.d. I need to place 2 threaded holes of different diameters through the wall of the pipe, (one is for M4 grub screw other is for M5 Grub screw) the hole centres share the same centre line at half the main tube diameter. So same axis but 180 degrees opposing each other. I have tried to draw on a created plane and that was successful but when I did the opposing hole using same process it messed up both holes. Any ideas what I am doing wrong ? Thanks
