    Looking forward to your repair video - the power supply should be fine but it's likely those lithium-ion main batteries that caused the laptop to shut off have a fault. Test those batteries in another Toshiba if possible, sometimes the batteries go bad from internal shorts or corrosion, less likely than NiMH batteries but it can happen. It's normal behaviour for the PSU to shut off if the battery has a fault. Personally I wouldn't worry about the battery, it doesn't change the functionality of the laptop except for its portability. For the whining sound, you're exactly right and it's good that you have a new inverter on order - sadly those aren't cheap now I think. The fault is relatively easy to fix though, just the C3 capacitor has failed on the UA0392P01 inverter, I've fixed a bunch of them and its always that one that's failed. If it leaked enough it could damage the PCB or put electrolyte under other components which will cause more faults though. Good luck and enjoy the 400CDT :)

      Thanks! So, the repair is already complete… I just have to edit the video. I don’t want to spoil it, but the biggest issue is the laptop is completely dead unless I install a charged battery. Most of my Toshibas work fine with just the AC power and no battery. This one is totally dead unless you have a battery installed. And it won’t charge the battery at all. I can charge the battery in a known good system, and it will work fine, and then the laptop will run for a couple hours, but it will never charge and never work on AC with or without the battery. So strange!

    Nice. I pulled out my 205CDS just the other day, the second laptop I used in high school and first couple of years in college. P90 with 40 megs of RAM, but I think it's just a passive matrix display. The laptop itself still powers and boots like a charm, but the screen has been reduced to an unreadable, bright mess, as some screens tend to become with age or stored in too much heat, perhaps? I'm not sure why because I never stored it in an attic or anything, but maybe my upstairs room was just too hot for it. I need to do a data dump on it. I LOVE this era Toshiba notebook.

    I just received my PicoGUS and it's pretty awesome in my Pocket386! I tested most of the FW/emulated devices without issue. I'll leave it in SB mode most of the time, but can change to GUS, etc in the live system with the pgusinit tool. Absolutely amazing 👏 would only be better if it had a headphone output with a volume knob, but that's easy to fix. I'll buy one or two for my Book8088 systems with MicroRAM and PicoMEM UMB setups

  • @Smakificator
    @Smakificator Před 4 dny

    I've got a PicoGUS, new in box, ready to go. Just one thing delaying deployment... Real GUS is still installed and working! The experience you are having right just now, playing Epic Pinball, One Must Fall 2049, Jazz Jackrabbit, with PERFECT sound, and on a 386... was part of my.... early adulthood. So yep I'm old. But got to hear and play these games at the time. In 1993. And Demo Scene? Yep just as great as you are imagining it. Here we are in 2024, with GUS love making a huge comeback. It's only a matter of time now before somebody's video shows off a new update from PicoGUS. Perhaps it will be MIDI and Sound Blaster digital stereo. When that happens? It might be time to pull the real GUS and install the PicoGUS.

    I was about to order one of these when I found this video. The one I'm getting has a clear case instead of the transparent black. I still have most of the DOS games and applications that I ran back in the day so this will be fun. I have Windows 3.11 in case this thing is too slow for 95. I think I still have an AOL install disk somewhere too, not that it will do anything since AOL is gone, Lol. I'll have to come up with an adapter to accept an external floppy disk drive just for fun. BTW, the parallel port is useful for plugging in an old school dot matrix printer, in case one has one laying around. Not sure why I'm buying one of these because I still have my 386 powered laptop, along with a 286 and 486 laptop.

  • @rebeccaschade3987

    I don't understand why on earth they'd ship a 386 (SX even!) with Windows 95. Even a 486 is extremely slow in Windows 95. Putting MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 would be a much more sensible choice. I get that to make this work, using an SoC like solution like this makes sense. The M6117 has everything you need for a system like this built in. The only addition is the OPL3 synth chip. To me though, this is just a bit lacking. If it had at the very least had digitized sound playback (i.e. sound blaster compatibility) it would've been great for adventure games. But then again, when would I need to play those on a tiny little laptop with a tiny little screen? A handful of times a year when I'm out travelling perhaps, but then a good book will be just as useful. This should simply have been larger. Bigger screen, about 14", more powerful hardware, digitized sound... Then this could have been the "one size fits most" retro gaming solution for those who want real hardware, but don't want the hassle of sourcing actual old parts etc. As it is, it seems like a case of making something simply because they could, without asking if they should. Then again, I'm sure they are cheap to make, and as long as people buy them, they're making money, so what the hell do I know? :P

    • @retrotv1tech
      @retrotv1tech Před 5 dny

      So, the good news is that you don’t ever have to use Windows 95 at all for any reason. As you can see in the video, it boots straight to DOS, and you can remove 95 and add 3.1 if you want. It’s pretty easy to do. Also, I agree about having a soundblaster. That would be very helpful having a DAC over just an OPL3.

    The 386 isn't really enough to handle a lot of Win95 stuff. A 486 in this machine would have my money instantly, especially a faster later model one. I know Pentiums are hard to source for this kind of thing and honestly it might not be a great fit. But 486s are cheap and incredibly common. Just have to find a pile of them in a warehouse somewhere and you're golden.

I didn’t buy the Book 8088 because honestly there isn’t a lot you can do with a 4.77 mhz V20, but this one is at least 40mhz and can run lots of DOS games pretty decently in VGA. 486 would be the sweet spot for sure. A 486 DX2 66 would be perfect.

Ever since Phil and the vogons guys showed us that you can use the setmul utility to disable individual caches. Run at full speed (~200MHz), or downclock to many specific results, for clock speed sensitive games. The IBM ThinkPad 770 is my ultimate... Definitely get a CDT for sure. CS or CDS are the dual scan screens and not great for gaming. The 410 CDT is good, but it is 800x600 and will have a smaller picture with borders around it in DOS games or scaling with some graphical glitches.

      @@retrotv1tech Sadly because a 640x480 screen was seen as a down-side compared to an 800x600 display at the time these were sold, there are just less of them to find. Also I think manufacturers moved quite quickly from vga to svga in the pre-MMX pentium era. @guardianali - the 400CDT is the highlight because its 640x480 screen scales 320x240 / 320x200 games very nicely. Sadly it's rare compared to the later models. The later models with SVGA screens didn't have very advanced scaling so where the scaling wasn't 2:1 mapping, there would be some pixel lines end up thinner/taller than others and it can look messy, that didn't get better until around the year 2000. Stay away from models ending in "S" or "X", those are a different type of LCD that's very poor for gaming. The 410CDT is great for old games, but doesn't scale low res quite as nicely as the 400CDT, you can turn display scaling / stretch off in the BIOS and the VGA / 320x200 games will have black borders but have proper 1:1: or 2:1 scaling

    This was so fun to watch, even as a “non-techy” person! Love the nostalgia these vlogs bring and it’s always cool to see what you’re able to do with this retro technology! They don’t make them like they used to, that’s for sure ☺️ Thanks for the video Josh!
