I hope this reaches you since I have a question that I desperately need the answer for (if you have the knowledge). I am starting to truly get confused on whether Hijab (covering of the hair specifically) is truly obligatory in islam or if it is simply a cultural practice that was passed down. Because when you look at people in the 50's and 60's, no one and not even the daughters of Al Azhar used to wear it. I am certain that modesty is necessary but how can we be certain that the hijab/khimar/head covering is genuinely obligatory. God could have easily asked women to cover their hair, however, the Surah asks to draw the veil over the chest (keep in mind the context in which they already used to wear veils due to cultural practices back then), but the Surah does not explicitly mention the commandment of covering the hair/head when it easily could have. I hope you can help with anything and I would be very grateful!
