La i 1916
Investigative journalist Kevin Magee examines a controversial shooting in 1916, when the first RIC man was killed in the Easter Rising. Magee carefully recreates the events of the day and reveals how the RIC man Charlie McGee met his death.
This documentary follows the lives of four men who were caught up in the events of Easter Monday, 1916. Charlie McGee, a native Irish speaker from the Donegal Gaeltacht, was shot dead, and Lieutenant Robert Dunville, heir to the Dunville Whiskey empire, was injured. The rebels involved included Belfast republican Seán MacEntee, who later became Tánaiste in the Irish government, and Paddy McHugh, a key figure in the Irish War of Independence.
In a contemporary twist, the relatives of the RIC man and the descendants of the chief suspect come together to discuss the fallout from the killing more than 100 years later

When we are gone, what do people remember of us? Neal MacGregor, an English artist, died alone, prematurely, aged 44, in a stone hen-house that he couldn’t stand up in, where he lived without water, electricity or heating on a remote island. The Gaelic-speaking islanders on the rapidly depopulating island, knew little of Neal during the 8 years he lived there. Who was this Stranger? Was he a Br...

Jointly funded and commissioned by the Irish Language Broadast Fund and BBC Northern Ireland, Isteach chun an Oileáin was filmed over two years by Westway Films and it tells the story of the islanders’ struggle to rebuild a community that was effectively wiped out in the 1970s. At that time the pressures of modern living, the demise of fishing stocks and the lack of proper docking facilities, t...

Have the islanders had a new pier yet ?
Yes they got a new pier, you can see it this video czcams.com/video/Iv20jeJLa5c/video.html
Interesting.
Be great if the bbc would do a show on in the 1970 s the local priest found out about a plan between the government and Catholic Church to depopulate the Tory . No party would involved to help until Ian Paisley found and got involved, he took the case to the European Parliament and saved the island. How sad that a gealic speaking island in Donegal had to saved by a free Presbyterian minister from the Catholic Church they pray to 😢

Listening to Irish even though I understand nothing just feels so refreshing.
I REALLY, REALLY appreciate this channel and how it allows to get such a good listen of the language!!! Thanks a lot for all these videos!!! 😄😃🙏💖💛
Dude that story about the couple who drowned...that is tragic. The other one too. That one person who survived-God must've had more work for them to do.
A small prediction, made with no expertise, other than my strong Irish heritage, and common sense. This is a beautiful, if slightly harsh, island. It has few inhabitants year round, but a deep history of a heartfelt connection to the sea, and a way of life that brings solace and yearning to many hearts. Many will discover its lure, a pier will be built, and the people will come. Some with history here, some with none. But they will come. New money and old will find its way because the island holds dreams as its heritage and a way of life that cannot be bought at any price. It is why the older inhabitants are pulled back, irresistibly, and, although outsiders may not be able to experience that pull, they will know it when they see it.
Surely we can all understand Mici’s transformation at being on his beloved island. The sea is in his very bones. He is strong and vibrant when home.
What has happened over the past seven years, I wonder? Ireland has begun to be successful in many ways over the past few decades. I can’t believe that this island won’t become a place people, will want to be, and that they won’t begin to try to exploit its beauty.

Im learning Irish, why I'm watching. I just love what the woman was saying at 7:35, "It was difficult work, but if you're interested in it, no work is difficult." Wow, that really speaks to me.
You should check out the other videos on my channel then, most are in Irish as well.

Curious, how proficient is Conall's Irish? His pronunciation is highly anglicised but judging by the subtitles he does advanced narration.
It's lovely to hear true native Irish speakers. They speak with a natural fluency. I have no doubt that Conall is proficient in the language but he is mainly narrating from a script. Since this is a BBC documentary, I suspect he rehearsed many of his questions and conversations too.
@@Islandicus What initially surprised me is how even these traditional Gaeilgeoirí may use the English R; neither the thick nor slender R is like that. Like the king of Thoraí says "Rí" just like "Ray" in Irish English. Then again, that happened to the Pennsylvania German language too.
why carry everything by hand? strong back weak mind? life's hard enough. can someone please introduce the hand truck or wheelbarrow to them.

We were on Oilean Cleire for holiday last year. Something they are doing is scoil samhraidh. Some houses done up and family members act as bean an ti. Ranganna gach la sa halla. Might be a way to inject some finance into the island, and encourage homeowners to do up homes. Now the pier is there it would be feasible. Obviously, covid19 will have to pass first. Or even for adults, poetry, storytelling or music festival. An Gaeilge a spreagadh leis. Just a thought.

Then, somehow, it is for you, Brian. I strongly believe in these feelings that many of us get, but don’t talk about. Good for you.
These are stunningly beautiful islands with gentle and kind people.
Is there any place in ireland where the children speak irish
Yes
Thanks for sharing this. My grandmother was born and raised on Inishbofin (a McGee), leaving in 1909 to settle in Philadelphia.
Wow- that woman Mary is in the right line of work and how lucky for that town. What a beautiful school and what a wonderful approach to education. I especially agree with her point that all children deserve the same support and guidance, and that college is not the only path to a fulfilling, happy life. GRMA!

wonderful to have the opportunity to express his artistic vision of such a tranquil place!
Why do these independent people want the government to do everything for them .If you live on an island there are resources all around you. Can they not be co operational and start the pier with there own resources?
do you have roads? did you build them yourself? are there not resources all round you also?
Pal most of the original islanders are in their fucking 80s how do you expect them to get out there and start laying concrete
The movement of young people out of rural areas is collapsing rural economies and erasing entire ways of life. Better (and cheaper) to buy them a pier and help them build a stronger local economy before, like Italy, they have to pay foreigners to come and renovate their crumbling, abandoned rural towns or lose them entirely.
I agree but I've heard in some countries when small communities like this try to fix their own community, and the government finds out people are doing it without government approval, oftentimes they will send in people to stop the communities from doing said fixes (which of course is more expensive than just helping them build the pier but governments aren't always logical..)
Meraviglia.
