Hi there, thanks for the Video. I bought myself a venus fly trap and was wondering what to feed them, saw a Video and people mentioned "Waxworms" so i bought myself some of those on Amazon . Obviously my little fly trap won't eat all those worms. I don't want to become a Waxworm breeder , but your advice was helpful. Greeting from Northern Ireland

great video very interesting. How long did you leave the pairing? So if I ever mate two mantises I will show them this video, so they can get some inspiration ;)
Pairing them took about 15 minutes but then they stayed connected for around 10 hours, it is sometimes a little less, sometimes a lot longer. Getting them to connect in the first place is the hard part and then timing it so that you're there when he finishes so you can guide him away from the female.
Interesting video, well done, I hope you get some tiny little mantises then ;) So do you let them stay like that for the next hours? If I ever want to mate my mantises I will show them this video.... perhaps they get horny then ;-)
Thank you, for some reason it held this comment for review lol They stayed together for 8 or 9 hours if I remember correctly.
I've heard of some people using a layer of vaseline around the top of the fruit fly container to prevent them from escaping. I assume you don't do this since you don't want your nymphs consuming petroleum jelly?
Absolutely correct, I also don't want my box covered in it either. It's much easier for me to just tap the box to make them fall than it would be dodging around vaseline

I breed the flies as well. They go through 100s every day so it would cost too much to buy them lol Thank you :)

nice video, very helpful, perhaps I should try mating two easy mantises too when I have more time. With which mantises did you have the less problems during mating? Is there a species that gives you success almost every time?
I would always suggest cryptics or ghosts for the first attempt, Claus. Maybe even desiccata. I think I have a video of pairing cryptics on here so you can see how easy they are.

Porcellionides pruinosus - Orange Dalmatian (The ant is a messor barborous and the springtail is just a temperate white lol)

@@mybookishpromise Sadly, I don't have those this year. I "might" pick some up though for later in the year. There are numerous mantis with the common name "Wide armed mantis" so if you know the scientific name that would really help?

Not sure what kind of gentle waxworms you have there. I had a batch and was obligated to keep them in a glass tank with a metal screen top. They *chewed through* the sides of plastic tubs and plastic screen. They chewed through the lid of the cup I got them in overnight. That being said, I never had happier giant danio, anoles or house geckos than when I'd let them have a fat well-fed worm. One particularly cool thing I noticed was that they made their own heat as they nested in the bedding (I made artificial honeycomb with honey, bran and melted beeswax on crumpled wax paper). They were particularly difficult to separate out when they pupaed (you really left off how cobby and sticky their cocoons are and that they will somehow figure out how to put themselves right under the lid without exception, which is not a nice surprise)

All depends on where in the world you live really. No promises! In a temperate climate they're quite abundant.

i found a praying mantis once in my garden and I was so excited. They are my favorite insect and they are so alien looking. They have this intelligence to them that makes them almost unbelievable to witness. Would love to keep some as pets someday, ❤😊

Had to have them, your favourite colour!!! Those are cards between the enclosures so the mantis can't see each other and get stressed :) Ran out of black card so I'm going all rainbow for pride lol
