Its very simple. IF the guy and girl like each other they both (yes both - including the girl!) have a responsibility to interact in the date and make the other person feel good and special. This is a duty to participate in the date rather than sitting there like a self entitled person expecting the other person to make all of the effort. In this way, if a guy likes a girl he should make her feel special and one way is to stop her from worrying about the bill and to just enjoy herself. Similarly, pulling her chair out, opening a door, putting her coat on are all ways a man is just making her feel loved, cared for and special. Nothing to do with her not being capable of doing any of that. She then has to reciprocate if she feels the same way, by taking an active interest in him, asking questions, laughing, caring for him, making sure she also shows care and respect for him on the date. In that way, he then views her as a lovely woman who has EARNED his respect and he is more than willing to pay. And she views him as a lovely man who has EARNED her respect and she will always offer to slit the bill and never feel self entitled to have her food paid for. Thus money is not an issue in that scenario and I would happily pay. However, if he does not like her in that way and cannot see a second date coming, and she also doesn't like him - then it is perfectly ok to be cordial and split the bill. There is not a hard and fast rule- sometimes they might really respect each other and like each other but if she insists on splitting the bill - perhaps for example there is a huge disparity in the cost of what she had ordered vs him - then its absolutely fine to. But both need to like each other and play a 50% role in making the date work for the man to pay for the bill. Then it makes perfect sense because he values her and wants to invest time in her and visa versa. I've heard about girls who just go on first dates to get free food and drinks. That is an example of a girl who does not deserve any respect that she has not earned - so women who are the self entitled, bitchy type - of course they don't deserve to be paid for. No second date would happen in that case, as a man, you are not responsible to make her feel special - you don't WANT to be with her, you don't want a relationship with her - so split the bill, be cordial and part ways. Simple.
