We cannot accept the last principle, simply because if there is no welfare then the whole point of going through the process of original position, under the veil of ignorance, would be pointless. Why do we want justice? So that we can start afresh from a fair point where somehow all of us are equal. Welfare is the next step after justice. This is my answer. Thank you for the video, you are an excellent educator. :)

The first page of Plato's Republic has Socrates being "forced" by a majority. It's a clear jab at the potential for mob rule with democracy.

Great work, thank you! I wonder why Bacon titles his work "novum organum", seems like his work is a derivative of Aristotle's work, as he complains in Book I Axiom 7. Does Bacon introduce anything new to induction?

There is no "objective" moral law. To be more precise, morality is not, and should not, be a function.

I don't understand how 'greater good' theodicies can work with a normative construal of good and evil. Which is to say, what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, and we're understanding those terms to be coextensive with good and evil. I'm understanding the good as: what ought to be done. And evil as: what ought not to be done. If something is permitted because it makes possible a 'greater good' that could not have been brought about otherwise, then it ought to be done. And therefore, is not evil. Put differently, in virtue of what are they evils if they are permitted because they bring about a 'greater good'? Ought not they be done, then? In which case, aren't they good? Why are you calling them evils?

Examples like the pencil "illusion" demonstrate the reliability of perception, not the opposite. It is not the abstract mind that knows the pencil is straight. It is our perception of it out of the water. Such illusions demonstrate the fallibility of perception, but not its falsity.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, teaching the ancient Vedic traditional knowledge with which perhaps A might have been acquainted, tells us that thought itself is the source of movement. Indeed there is nothing else but thought expressed as movement: it comprises the entire creation And the purpose of it all? The Samhita of Rishi, Devata, Chaandos. Pure awareness experiencing itself. Thus the duty of every living being is to become Yogi so as to involve self in this process.

I do not agree with the second part of the difference principle, the example part because as per Rawls inequality is okay if the worst off are most benefitted but in your example, they are benefitted but not most, in fact barely any improvement from 15k to 25 where as the proportion of increase was much higher for rich and hence it does not justify the difference principle.

I can see your point there. Like if we know about someone who has been stabbed 20 times we will paint a picture of the suffering they had and in that case the message can be delivered. But the thing is if we knew about other terrible stories, say children born with AIDS, what’s point from that? What’s the take home message for ordinary people like me and you? They’ll be always examples of pointless/too much/unnecessary suffering in this world.

We must think in practical terms. The. Reasons given are valid but ideas induced by emotions and feelings created by environment are not innate. It must come from within. But the problem is we have developed a herd mentality from birth and our mind is so conditioned by it . A good media or leader must lead the people and at the same time must have the capacity to prevent them from misleaded by others. They should not allow the public to lead them . But in practice they allow the public to lead them to come to power. Great examples in Sri Lankan politics for good leadership are Sir. John Kottalawela, and Mrs. Chandrika Kummaratunga but ultimately they failed to win the public confidence.
