    I’m with Strathclyde pension care protection scheme supposedly pension for life I’m 43 and paid 19yr into pot already started my AVCs last year but bye 64 I would’ve maxed out my pension contributions from Strathclyde pension, so old guy that’s got 2 year left till he maxes out said I don’t need AVCs so do I my goal was to use AVCs so can take as my work lumpsone so keep my max annual pension amount without reducing my overall pension pot should I still contribute to AVCs, there’s always option to retire early or backup if I’m out of work

    Errrr......you perhaps have ignored that if you start an AVC early, then with growth a bigger pot is available by retirement age rather than start later > 40. I suppose if you start early, then by age 40 you might even stop paying into an AVC ...and watch the pile grow for free. Amazingly, there are some advantages in not buying a house in your 20s (the house might decrease in value or require very expensive repairs as an owner like a new roof/windows/doors/insulation/heating system etc). Its almost as though you are giving more of a lifestyle advice that you must be an owner. Lots of renters are part of Social landlords like a housing association and are protected by affordable rent increases.

    Hi Paul, I like the FI part not the RE part . I agree starting a pension as soon as you can is probably the best way to go. But we are getting screwed in Ireland with the high taxes on ETFs/ Index funds on investments in Ireland outside of a pension. With the 1% levy and 41% exit tax plus the very high management fees that the big banks charge in Ireland. We should have ISAs like in the UK and junior ISAs to save and invest with no tax on the gains made and with the choice of low management fees like Vanguard that charge about 0.2% a year in the UK. Not like the crazy management fees of about 1 to 1.5% that the banks charge in Ireland for similar kind of investment funds. The banks are making a fortune out of us especially on pension funds with them crazy high management fees not to mind allocation fees.

  • @darrenmcinerney2212
    @darrenmcinerney2212 Před 4 měsíci

    Bring in junior ISAs like in the UK. No tax on the gains made and low management fees of around 0.2% with the likes of Vanguard. We are getting ripped off in Ireland big time, with the way we are taxed and very expensive management fees that the banks/advisers charge.

  • @darrenmcinerney2212
    @darrenmcinerney2212 Před 4 měsíci

    Ireland should have an ISA like they do in the UK no tax on any gains made from investments. Tax here on ETF and index funds is 41% on gains that have to be paid every 8 years. Also much higher management fees with the regular banks. Average management fees with Vanguard passive index funds in UK are 0.2% . The banks here charge about 1 to 1.5% which makes a huge difference over long term investments. At least Trade Republic are currently paying 4% on cash deposits at the moment.

    Another common mistake people make is that they forget they have to pay outrageous taxes in Ireland on investments. Dirt tax, capital gains tax and exit taxes on ETFs. Pension is arguably the only decent investment 😢

    Hi Paul. Pretend you’re on a decent salary 50k Ireland . And aim for 3 property’s like you said. You start saving early 20s. If you manage to get 50% deposit (say 120k for 240k 2/3 bed house/apartment) 120k takes long time to save. You still live at home. You rent out at 1800 to pay smaller 900 mortgage over 20 years. So you split even or take a loss whenever property needs upgrading. Because you took so long to save 120k (15k a year would take 8 years) you’re now nearly 30 and still living at home with parents? Will take another 8 years to save for second property and then you’d still be living at home if you went ahead with this to buy the second property? What’s your opinion on what I’m saying? Is it not very tough to get 3 property’s and then also youre going to want to buy a home for yourself? It’s good to save while young but you also don’t want to save meticulously for 20-30years to have a passive income of 3k when your in your 60s. Just asking because I want to get into property but trying to be realistic about it. Hopefully hear back from you thanks

    My husband and I have been looking at houses in Ireland. We’re thinking about moving there in the next five years and we’re looking at houses under 200k and our house in America we bought it for 183k and it’s shit and the houses that we’ve been looking at in Ireland are about the same but with more property and the houses that are like anywhere from 25k to 100k qualify for vacant house, grants which some of them can be up to like 70k which my friend who is a contractor in galway said it would only cost like maybe 50k for some of the houses we were looking at.
