It’s our mission at Hearing First and the Oberkotter Foundation to help families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. We want to support parents of children with hearing loss as you navigate this journey so your child can listen, talk, read, and thrive - just like kids with typical hearing. We're here from those critical early days to those big celebrations, and every step in between.
With Listening and Spoken Language (LSL), children with hearing loss are learning to listen, talk, and do so much more! Want to learn more? Discover the proven path to listening and talking for kids who are deaf or hard of hearing at hearingfirst.org.

What's Possible with Early Identification of Hearing Loss
Do you know the status of your baby’s hearing? The newborn hearing screening (NHS) makes it possible to identify hearing loss early for little ones. If your baby is identified with hearing loss, the possibilities are endless for them to learn to listen, talk, read, and thrive. The great news is that with early identification and hearing technology, children with hearing loss won’t miss a moment of access to sound to build their brain for language and learning.
In this video, you’ll hear from Dr. Carol Flexer, a Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist (LSLS Cert. AVT) and a licensed audiologist. She is going to explain what you need to know about your baby’s hearing, especially in these critical early days, weeks, and months to ensure their little brain is accessing all of the sounds of speech to help their brain grow. Watch this video to learn more about your child’s hearing and brain development, and why early identification is important.

Kya yah gene therapy hearing loss ke liye India mein kab tak aaegi
It is not yet available to the general public anywhere in the world. But your pediatric audiologist will be able to recommend which hearing devices would help your child get access to all the sounds of speech. And once they have access to sound, the very best thing you can do for your child is to spend lots of time time talking, reading, and singing songs with them.
Mera baby dhai saal ka hai 95 hearing loss hai kya aapke pass treatment ho sakti hai
Gene therapy is still in the early stages of research and testing, but we recommend connecting with a pediatric audiologist in your area to get advice on what the next steps should be for your child. We also have several families from India in the Families of Children with Hearing Loss Facebook Group: bit.ly/3UHyhqp. They'd be able to give you more specific information about what resources are available in India.

The research for gene therapy is still in its early stages, but we recommend seeing your primary care provider and getting a referral to an otologist/neurotologist. The Hearing Loss Association of America's website www.hearingloss.org is another great resource for adults with hearing loss.

I can connect so much with Marissa. I have a 3 year old daughter with profound hearing loss with ANSD condition and we got her single cochlear implant 4 months back, we are going through her speech therapy and the days are so tiring and so overwhelming, and the results are so slow, I struggle alot and I can see my daughter struggling so much to try to speak., but even though I'm still waiting for her to call me mumma, the biggest happiness I feel right now is when she turns back when I call her name for which I waited for almost 3 years.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. We know this journey is full of ups and downs. We would love for you to join our Facebook group to connect with our families whose kids are deaf or hard of hearing and get encouragement from parents who know exactly what it's like: facebook.com/groups/hearingfirst.

Thank you so much for sharing! Riley, you're so impressive! Thanks for the hope! ❤
Hi Mam. I heard that it is not possible for a child to talk after 5 years old (born deaf). Is that true? But Ms. Jentry started to hear after 15 years? How was it possible for her to talk? I need some advice on this please.
Every child with hearing loss has a unique journey, and Jentry’s story is one we share to show all that is possible with the advancements in hearing technology today and with using Listening and Spoken Language. If your child has hearing loss, a pediatric audiologist would be able to guide you on if and what hearing devices they should use and what is possible for them with their speech development. Trust your instincts too! You know your child better than anyone, and it may take meeting with a few different specialists to come up with the best plan for moving forward. We'd love to share our "Find Your Way" guide for parents bit.ly/get-started-for-child-hearing-loss and the Mission Probable whitepaper with relevant research: www.hearingfirst.org/m/resources/7152.
LSL is not for every deaf child! It would work for those with a mild loss or maybe a moderate loss but for those deaf children with a profound loss, that do NOT have a cochlear implant or be able to use hearing aids, it would not work. What about deaf children with deaf parents? This would obviously not work. The brain IS primed for language but not just spoken language, ASL is a language that the brain is primed for as well! The problem is not in the brain, it's a problem with the ear, usually the inner ear in the cochlea. I showed your videos to my classes so they would understand what LSL is and how it's used.
Its so inspirational
Hi mam
❤❤❤

This is great. I am a SLP I will share your videos with my parents.
Wow great example video for parents
We went through it. My daughter is 3 year month 8 months now. She has severe to profound hearing loss. Now she speaks, reads in her mother language. She is like typical kid in all realms of cognition. It her mother's success. I feel proud for my wife and daughter. I was very gloomy two years ago. Now I am relieved. We still have many things to do for her. We will. And she managed it with only hearing aids. We get the best support from the community here in Karnataka state of India.
We really appreciate you sharing your experience and celebrating your daughter and wife in this way! It's wonderful to hear how well your daughter's doing and we know other families will be encouraged by your story and your hope.
God bless my son. I love him so much. Hearing loss truly brought best potential out of me. This gurney doesn't end but how we look at it makes big difference. We always have to support our hearing imarered children. It will come one day for me to see and enjoy how he will progress and be able to help other with hearing loss when he grows.
Thanks for sharing this, Leah! We're rooting for you and for your son. Continue to dream big for his future! The sky is the limit.
