With their music using a lot of number stations as samples, and tomorrows harvest referencing them in their promotions, boards of canada are a lot like the operators of number stations themselves. Hidden away and very rarely actually sending out a signal. They're absolute enigmas. I hope they're doing alright.
This is all we get... 90 seconds of casual chat
They utilize technology to create masterpieces but remain away from it as to not get to far away from nature.

We are the Boards Of Canada.
It was 1998,1st year in college, i stumbled upon the video lab at the art school I attended in Oakland, and checked out a digital camera. I asked the weird guy managing the video equipment, wtf are you playing in the back there, it's amazing, where I came from I only listened to gangster rap. He told me its Boards of Canada, 25 years later studied EDM left and right up and down, wave after wave, nothing compares to the OGs of the biz --> BOC.
You can see in these comments what BOC means to them. To me the band provides solice in a disturbed world. I can't believe they have provided such beautiful music that feels like perfection. It's no surprise that us die hard fans long for just one more album, however like the tragic melancholy of BOC, we will probably not see this beauty from them again.
Marcus and Eoin deserve an OBE. They probably wouldn't accept it, though.
Random question: but they call the song XY “Zee”. This sounds normal to me as an American but I always heard people in the UK say “zed”. Is it “zee” in Scotland? Or did they just deliberately use the American version for some reason
It's part of their aesthetic, they have a lot of samples from. Sesame Street and American TV shows etc, voiceovers, it's a kind of psychedelic Americana
John Peel music legend and hero
Omg their voice makes me happy! Knowing such elementally atmospheric their tunes are, comes from such upbeat happy dudes just puts a smile on my face. Fingers crossed we get to hear something new from them soon 😮💨🤞
Do you have the full version please ? Edit : even if it's short, it's basically one of the best cover of this Masterpiece
Somehow, listening to this makes me realise what an absolute car crash Radio 6 is.
Radio 6 actually play out loads of peel sessions, it's great!
favourite letter of the alphabet .... M .... this next track is called XYZ LOL
" We're off to the pub actually " lmao
crazy
I love those guys, and John Peel just as much.
sound like humans
Not weird ,true talent,no need for show!
"We're just two regulars blokes from Glasgow, nothing sinister. Also, we'd like to thank our Lord and Savior, Lucifer, for empowering us to spread his unholy message of pestilence and despair."
“what is your favorite letter of the alphabet” “m.” always kills me idk why
I think it's how quick he answered.. definitely thought hard about it at one time
@@MarioEpsteinit's that but also the imperative tone they've conveyed. * "M." *
Mike and Marcus I imagine
Full version! czcams.com/video/5HD0qXcXvQg/video.html
called boards of Canada, but are from Scottland. Take my money.
read the reason why they're called that :)
Best vocals
One of the rare instances of the demo being better than the final version.
Avicii heaven?
rare? i feel its common.
I disagree the final version is tight.
the demo is worse than the final version tf u smokin
They look like Mickey and Shane from Shameless.
Someone must make a version that sounds like this tone of the song. Like edit it to sound like this. Someone please do it!
I want this version to be completed
I have a theory as to why the release version got the key change. The lead synth in this version is already relatively high, and the bit later in the song where it goes an octave up would be almost grating to the ears. In this key, moving it down an octave would just be too low and muddy. So by raising the reference key of the song, it gave him more room to move around with the lead synth for dramatic effect. I don't know if he's ever talked about why he changed the key, but that's my best guess.
this is lower than the normal version. The normal version is pitched up by 2 seminotes (but still uses the original vocals just pitched up) likely because the bass is on that awkward low C/B which doesnt really get reproduced very well.
my GOD this guy got a massive voice!!!
So underrated
The look at people’s faces when people assume this band is Canadian but they’re actually two wee Scottish lads!
XYZed, lads
nope
@@mj9663 yeah, we invented it :)
Yep, I don't get why they'd pronounce it that way. It's like nails on a chalkboard.
They sound so cool, so chill, and ultimately not scary dudes haha anyone knows if they will be releasing another album???
bet they will when is another story
The better question is how many albums/EPs they still have in them. They are 50 now, and they have considerably slowed in their output, which either tells us that they only make music for the circle of friends, music has stopped being a focus in their life (1-2 albums every decade) or they've grown very perfectionistic.
@@kidkangaroo5213 it's a matter of what they choose to release to the public. they've probably got tons of private projects left in them but what they choose to give to the public (and a fanbase that intently watches their every move) is a different story
@@kidkangaroo5213 I think they've just grown out of it honestly. Their stuff might just never be fully released, simplest way to put it.
I've grown to be ok with the notion that we may never see any more public releases. I'd rather just have what we have now than a new release that's underwhelming in some way or just too different. Their music is so nostalgic, it embodies nostalgia. It's the sound of memories. It speaks to me of times long gone, and it pretty much comes from those times now that it's 2023, that make sense? TH was released 10 years ago, which is pretty nuts. I really can't imagine what a "new", made in 2023, BoC release might sound like, unless it's stuff they wrote years and decades ago and decided to release. That said, for fuck's sake, PLEASE release more mixes in the vein of the Societas X Tape! Hands down the best mix ever, I'm not using these words loosely, it really is.
Need the full version with this vocals!!
I can't believe this is their ONLY interview!
there is a lot more but they are on articles.
"M" is the 13th letter in the alphabet
It’s also the first letter of both of their names
@@connor48880 hahahah
Wow is that them too? Above in the pic? They are very evasive
Just 2 dudes
The end absolutely kills me. The pad slowly fading in and detuning over time, then tightening up for the climax notes and detuning again as the phrase ends 🥰🥰🤤
can u drop a dl link to this? inb4 - no, I dont want youtube converters
@@hydralica you can't read can you
xd
"This is the only time their voices have been heard." Slight exaggeration, I'm sure they've spoken to a few people in their lives.
Underrated comment.
I dunno, are you sure they talked to anyone at that pub they went to afterwards?
@@linkrulezall apparently they got their beers and proceeded to sit in silence in the corner of the pub. May just be a rumour though.
@@huagrapoNot underrated anymore
Back before XYZ was finally officially released I used to listen to the recording of the radio broadcast including the talks with John Peel to the point where it just felt like part of the song, now it almost feels wierd to have them separated
Soon as i scrolled down i saw a peel session audio for xyz. Perfect timing.
They actually sound normal
They sound like pretty chill guys.
Sounding that hybrid North American scots accent.
They worship satan
@@agenteagresivo lmfao fuck off xd
@@agenteagresivo wut.the.fuck.? And. What. The. Facts?.
@@agenteagresivo the fact that you maybe scared of their music dont mean they worship satant you know?
Thanks, for uploading the interview intro/outro since greedy Warp copyrighted the original XYZ uploads with the interviews.
WTF? ridiculous
@@noelghallager4672 I mean to be fair Warp did release XYZ officially a few years back so they do own the copyright for that song now
@@Lil_Hashy I mean that's fine and dandy, but the way I understood the comment was that they owned the rights to the interview as well? Correct me if i'm wrong, please
I honestly thought they were Canadian
They moved to Scotland from Canada when they were very young.
@@marcmistermarc They were born in Scotland, lived in Canada for a year, then moved back to Scotland.
I did at first but probably because of their BOC name.
I thought that when I was a young lad. I believe they’re honorary Canadians, in my opinion! Great, great group!
They spent a year in Calgary as kids and I believe they spent some time in Nova Scotia at some point so they definitely have a connection to this country.
Could they be any more enigmatic? They have to be the most mysterious band ever.
The most mysterious band ever is les rallizes denudes or arboles hablando both underrated bands on their own way
how so? people constantly try to connect dots that aren't there
Tampaterry54 by ‘people’ you mean me?
to be fair i don't think they're any more enigmatic than a lot of people walking down the street. it's just odd to have artists not sharing much about themselves, especially well known ones. that said, i think i just read into the comment a bit much. lol. cheers!
@@Unkraut of course they’re ordinary people. I’m making my point in the context of the romance and mythology of popular music. These two brothers are ordinary but what they’ve created is extraordinary, therein lies the magic.
This sounds better!
They sound surprisingly normal
I thought they'd speak like a Vocoder.
