Reading Burtchaell's brilliant book "Catholic Theories of Biblical Inspiration since 1810" (Cambridge UP, 1969) and remembering his stimulating company in Notre Dame in 1981-82, I am happy to see that his life is honored by his confreres.

As someone who knew James T. Burtchaell, CSC, as teacher, author, homilist, and mentor -- and as someone versed in his 'fall' -- I would like even at this late date to register my dismay and profound disappointment with the homily delivered at his Notre Dame funeral mass. The speaker gave him prejudicially very short shrift. For decades (prior to his 'later years') he accomplished enormous good as a priest and scholar and the homilist showed no knowledge or appreciation of the full scope of the man or his career, remarking only that he had 'ruffled some feathers.' Particularly offensive was the statement that Fr Jim Burtchaell's suffering and death from Alzheimer's Disease was his 'penance for his sins, whatever they may have been, and he accepted it as such.' He, and we who knew him, did not interpret his Alzheimer's disease as a specific targeted punishment from God, as the speaker said. That comment is *deeply wrong theologically* and a gratuitous insult to the man and our memory of him. Our analogical knowledge of God's loving character enables us to say with confidence that God does NOT impose disease and suffering as punishment, as the speaker claimed. Fr. Jim Burtchaell deserved a much fuller and more compassionate appreciation at his Holy Cross farewell mass than the shallow and shameful 'judgementalism' that was delivered instead.

OMG, I just listened to this horrible sermon. The Church measures sin and sainthood by what gets into the newspapers, and gets excited basically only about homosexual sex. In 1981-82 Notre Dame was very uptight about gayness, on which it maintained a deep silence. One priest there committed suicide in obscure circumstances. Burtchaell's "betrayal" was intensified by this culture of silence (and oddly his whistleblower was head of the gaysoc, which did not exist in my time there);"He ruffled not a few feathers" [no reference to his theology]; "an expression of repentance that was not forthcoming" well, the homilist ensured he got a posthumous expression of repentance, identifying Burtchaell as St Dismas, the good thief; "a depletion of my mental abilities" "I scramble for old friends' names" (gosh, I've done so once or twice), "penance for his sin" "not unlike each one of us, graced by God, but also sinners" -- the sermon left the impression that the hugely significant matter in his life was his alleged passes at students (probably naivety or foolishness rather than anything more sinister).

I was one of the students at UF who went to daily Mass with Fr. Teall, and he was my confessor at UF. He read his Liturgy of the Hours in Latin, and I would borrow it from him and read the patristic reading for the day from his breviary. (I had largely taught myself the Latin, with first-class help from the Summa Theologiae and the Vulgate New Testament.) Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen. Anima eius et animae omnium fidelium defunctorum per misericordiam Dei requiescat in pace. Amen.

As a student at St. George's College in Santiago, Chile, I Fr. Teall's student. I was marked by his intensity in those years, the fifties. His ears and his smile were as charming as his way of prompt blushing. And his heart, so shared. His love of poetry exuded into our horizons. I will never forget, I was 17, his words during the Mass of farewell from Chile, in front of the carved wooden Crucifix that still stands in the chapel. He said we in this country could not step apart from the Lord. "You have the Andes mountains, you have the sea... and you have Neruda". I never saw him again, but followed his life. And thank him for all he carved in me.

Thank you Holy Cross for posting this. Fr. Jerry was a very special friend who I first got to know when we coached the Women’s Golf Team together and I was a student. Everything in the homily rings so true to me - his kindness, love and piety. It brought back great memories to me on the golf course and campus. I will always remember when he called me “cornball” after I hit a tee shot into a cornfield - and he never stopped teasing me about that. I will always remember the day we played golf with Moose Krause. I will always remember the love and care he showed me and, later, my wife and son when we would visit him. I will always remember his jokes, many of them corny. I will miss him very much and know that heaven is a better place with him in it.
