Making your own oars and mast for a viking boat. #8 of newbie builds viking boat
I found a mast in the woods! And make oars out of planks.

my axe is basically this one only with a wooden handle and better steel: amzn.to/3plGPpF
The mast is relatively low for a 20 foot boat. It is really only about 14 foot I guess. That is pretty logical when you realise it will hold a square sail.
The oars were 320 centimeters each when I made them, but I have since shortened them to 310. The longer length translates to a "higher gear" which makes sense when you are rowing with two or three people. I however always row alone, plus the boat is heavy with a full load and the water ballast. I wanted to "downshift" and so shortened the oars. The oars are not laminated but just made from one length of wood each. This gives them a bit more flex than I thought. If I would make them again I would buy one plank, saw it down the middle and laminate it together to get opposing grain direction and more stiffness.
I have rowed in it fully loaded twice for one hour now, against the wind, and it is a serious workout to go 5 km an hour. However, I am thrilled that it really works and gives me the confidence that it could be an expedition boat for me and my wife in more remote situations where we can't load the battery.

Wrong kind of wood for plank plank was made wrong too you never use any sawn wood only cleaned with an ax or adz. The thickness and dimensions are for Properly shaped oak for everything except oars, mast, and spars are pine or spruce. A bunch of knots in rudder is bad that's why we Vikings use material from trunk for rudder

A long packraft such as the Sigma TXL or Omega with the Anfibio multimat inside could also work without flipping. Just needs some rain cover. The nice benefit with flipping the raft is that you have a lot of space underneath to hide your gear.

@papahiker9041 I built one of these, czcams.com/users/shortsPP0QGj6uKP4?feature=share I made mine with a 3 lb bean can and use nesting 0.9L and 0.75L nesting cups and I love how well it nests in my edc bag. I use it for cooking lunch and plan to carry it when hunting and fishing and camping if I'm not carrying my bigger Biolite stove and grill. I had hoped this would be a good alternative to a Kelley kettle and in some ways it is, I can cook in it without having to carry extra pots, because it nests with my water bottle it's very size efficient compared to the Kelley kettle. it is very good in windy conditions like the KK, and I think it's probably a lighter system all together depending on what I'm using to store my water in. Also, I have the freedom to swap out my water bottle from a very light weight 1.5 L smart style water bottle for large capacity, or a 1 L insulated bottle for carrying hot or cold beverages. my question is, I had hoped it would be close to the KK in terms of time to boil for small quantities of water and it seems that base on the videos I've seen of the KK, mine is much slower. I don't know if it's a factor of my draught/chimney/intake size ratio, or that I'm using such a large bottomed pot that most of the heat is being wasted on the side walls when I'm just doing enough water for my coffee or something else. I have noticed that with my intake being a bit off the floor there's not good airflow at the bottom of my stove and I don't get good burn down there, I've added some holes below my intake to try to help with that but haven't had a lot of time to test that fix since then. please take a look at my short and let me know if you think I'm missing something on my design. I think in that video, I'm using it as a double boiler with the nested cups to keep from scorching the leftover dinner I'm warming up. thanks again for this good design. I'm looking forward to figuring out where I can optimize it better.
