My interpretation of “My Hero”, a poem (song) written by Dave Grohl about his friend, Kurt Cobain: … Too alarmin' now to talk about- it’s unpleasant/scary for them (Dave and the remnants of Nirvana) to talk about it (Kurt’s death). Take your pictures down and shake it out- it wasn’t okay to then, and seems as if it’ll never be the right time; so take all the reminders of him away from sight because it’s too soon to see how everything is going to shake out. That time may never come. Truth or consequence, say it aloud- Truth or Consequences was a game show, in which the contestants had to answer questions honestly, and if no answer/the wrong answer was given, the leader would decide their punishment. Dave went through so much publicity, after Kurt’s death, and he probably didn’t feel qualified to reveal anything about the band (Nirvana), or maybe there was someone who wouldn’t allow him to disclose that information. Use that evidence, race it around- There may have been a true statement/evidence presented about this secret; perhaps it was presented on the popular radio show, at the time, “Truth or Consequences”, and the news spread like wildfire. Maybe it has nothing to do with “Truth or Consequences”, and Dave was using the game show as an analogy for his situation with Nirvana; after the break up. … There goes my hero- there he goes… the one I looked up to. Watch him as he goes- he’s gone now, and I can only watch as others talk about him; as if he’d suddenly become a celebrity to the world, and that’s the last thing he would’ve wanted. Watch him as he goes- I’m still watching you; even though you’re gone, and it hurts so much, but I have no choice but to watch you, and hear your name, everyday. There goes my hero- there he goes… my best friend. He's ordinary- he was my hero; not because he was your idol, but he was special to me. … There goes my hero- there he goes… the man I admired; the one that taught me so much. Watch him as he goes- look at him, he’s everywhere, but I can never see him again. I think about him all the time. There goes my hero- my hero is gone now. He's ordinary- you would’ve loved him too, and not because he was a superstar. He was like you and me. For anyone who reads this, just know that this is the way I’ve interpreted this song’s lyrics, and I know Dave told Howard Stern that this was more about the everyday people; not celebrities, but in the same interview, he acknowledged that it was about Kurt, and he mentioned the band Kiss, and other artists he’d looked up to. It’s in the full interview, and I recommend watching it and listening to Dave; even though Howard Stern liked to cut people off as they were about to dive deeper into things. To me, this song was irrefutably about Kurt’s death, and after Taylor Hawkins died, Dave played this song right after a long, and tearful moment of silence for him. It should be evident that he wrote “My Hero” as a tribute to Kurt, by now, and just like any poem, there is room for interpretation, but the poet is the only one who knows the true meaning behind it. I believe that Dave doesn’t say its meaning outright because he’s a poet, and he wanted his audience to decide what the lyrics meant to them. He didn’t want to force his emotions, at the time, on us. If you’re a fan of poetry, then you should know they’re not meant to be interpreted objectively; even though they’re usually written objectively (for a specific purpose), by the author.
