BMW M4 - GridLife CMP 2024 - Track Battle
Round 1 of the GridLife 2024 Track Battle Season began at Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) in Kershaw, SC. This is my first full year competing in the StreetGT championship. The competition is stout including Corvettes, Supras, and other BMWs.
I had never been to CMP before, so there was a steep learning curve to get up to pace as quickly as possible. My goal for the weekend was to lay down a 1:42 or 1:41, and then see where I ended up in the standings. I hit my goal, but I was still a little ways off the drivers at the front. Still plenty left to learn and improve upon.

    I’m doing a similar build on my m4 right now! I’ve never done time attack yet but this makes me really wanna get into it! So far it’s only been autox. Where’d you get the gt4 lip and wing from?

    • @09_motorsports
      @09_motorsports Před 5 dny

      I do love time attack, and the F8X platform is very capable! I actually ordered the GTS lip and wing from Alibaba via a manufacturer in China. I know people may have issues and the quality can be suspect, but (hear me out here) the majority of carbon parts you order through "US" companies are manufactured overseas, shipped to the US, and then sold for a high markup. I did my research and found a reputable supplier that I was quite happy with through Alibaba. The company is called Guangzhou Feisheng Trading Co., Ltd. and I was happy with the quality. It isn't OEM quality, and I didn't expect it to be. But they did use OE BMW mounts that I was quite surprised with. I was able to get a wing, lip/splitter, and hood for the cost of a single hood from most any US company. Just be willing to wait a few weeks on shipping.

I've probably spent around half of what this cost, but all my tools are from Harbor Frieght. And my tool bag doesn't say sparco. If I could go back in time I would bite the bullet and just buy this.

      The wheel I have in the video is from Renown. It is the Clubsport Motorsport wheel in alcantara. Be aware that the 130R wheel from Renown won't fit the JQ Werks hub, the undercut on the center part of the wheel won't clear the button surrounds on the JQ Werks main hub.

Likewise, if a steering wheel did not fit the JQ Werks (like the 130R wheel), then I doubt it would fit the Zestek either. But again, this is just based on comparing the pictures online.

      @09_motorsports Před 5 měsíci

      I have my concerns that the Champion wheel with the leather horn pad will not fit the JQ Werks or Zestek. The added bulk from the horn pad would likely interfere with the buttons on the steering hub. It would be a tight fit and it may possibly work, but I have my doubts.

      @09_motorsports Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks for the kind words, I am glad you enjoy the videos. Good question on the aero, and the main reason I have not done anything yet is because of the rules based on the two organizations I mostly run with, which are SCCA Time Trials and GridLife. I am limited to OEM aero in these classes (Tuner 2 in SCCA; StreetGT in GridLife). I have recently purchased the M4 GTS wing and adjustable splitter, but that is the most aggressive aero I can run. While that will be a small improvement, it is nothing like running the GT4 aero or Bimmerworld aero. If I move up classes in the future, I would go to bigger aero for sure. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Just came across your channel while doing some steering wheel perusing... still stuck between the KMP solution and the JQ werks. We are on the same journey right now as I am converting my F82 M4 into a track car. Coincidentally we both have Sanomabeige Merino interiors, though I am taking the seats out to put my Recaros in. Currently restoring the carbon roof (what a joy...), and plan to upload a video of that... maybe I should make some videos installing the rest of my mods sitting in the garage. Thanks for posting this video, it really helps me understand the JQ Werks system, which I am leaning towards over the KMP right now. My only hesitation is the QR hub, which is a potential point of failure as the contacts and QR components begin to wear. Still, I really like that I have a choice of steering wheel with the JQ system. I'm subscribing and staying tuned!

    • @09_motorsports
      @09_motorsports Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you, and I hope you enjoy your build as well! You cannot go wrong with either wheel, KMP or JQWerks. I was also hesitant about the QR hub, but once I received it and saw how it is improbable to attach the wheel in such as way as to mess up the pins, it made me feel better. Wear of the pins could be an issue if you pull the wheel on and off a lot, but I'm less concerned about that because I don't plan on taking mine off everytime I get in and out of the car. With the smaller wheel diameter (and if you have a flat bottom wheel), there is plenty of room to get in and out for me even with my OMP bucket seats.

      @@alejoYVR Don't be too scared by those horror stories. A little bit of preventative maintenance/mods goes a long way. The engine and turbo will generate a lot of heat, especially when on track, that will cause the car to enter limp mode to keep the engine safe. Addressing those issues will make for a more enjoyable time on track and help the life of the components. I first did the oil cooler, and then later did the CSF radiator. I would do both before doing any major bolt-ons and tunes. I know it is fun to have more horsepower, but you need the proper supporting mods to keep everything in check. A fairly comprehensive list currently is as follows: CSF radiator; Wagner EVO 2 Comp Intercooler; Custom-DIY oil cooler including Setrab cooler replacement in the stock cooler location; Replaced oil filter housing gasket; Replaced valve cover/gasket; GFB+ diverter valve; all aluminum hard piping - lower intake to turbo, Turbo-to-intercooler, and Charge Pipe; Crank-bolt capture; Slon Workshop DCT oil pan (increased oil capacity and cooling). As for oil issues, I recently replaced my oil pan and had a VAC Motorsports baffle installed. It did make a difference by reducing oil pressure drops in certain turns that were previously concerning, with data to it back up. It is by no means a cure, but it did help. I have not done an accusump, but it is something I am considering.

      @@team9racing I really appreciate the detailed reply! and haha thank you! 1M was always a dream car of mine so im building my own! Ive currently also got FBO as in : Intake, Inlet, outlet, intercooler, upper / lower charge pipe, GFB DV+, Custom tune from wedge etc. Which im glad to see that youve done as that ticks some of the boxes. I did want to upgrade my oil cooler and gearbox cooler, i wasnt aware of the brands you just mentioned so i might have to have a look at those when i get my DCT serviced as the extra gearbox oil sounds quite appealing!. Ive seen alot of people mention that Accusump and it does interest me quite alot, along with the Vac Baffle, that was one i was looking into. did also play with the idea of potentially trying to modify an M135i baffled sump to fit, which i dont think you guys got that model out there did you? But my mechanic thinks he might have a go at trying to modify one of those to fit which im not actually sure has been done before yet. ( which is one of these mmrshop.co.uk/products/bmw-n55-sump-baffle ) Also seen some people do an M2 Sump however i know thats on the severely pricey end of the spectrum. However you have confirmed what i want to do as in baffled sump / maybe accusump and i can look into those extra bits youve done! But again mate thats really appreciated, thanks for taking the time out to give me a reply!

      @@jackse82 Happy to help give my thoughts. Sounds like you are well on your way! Here are my thoughts on what I did and why. I tracked my car for 2 years and logged full sessions with MHD. I went to 5 different tracks during those 2 years and out of those 5 tracks, I had low-ish oil pressure in 2 corners, each at different tracks. Both corners were hard braking zones into left hand 180 degree hairpins. The oil pressure dropped to the low 30 psi range during the turn. Otherwise, I had no oil pressure issues in any other areas on the track. My oil pan gasket started to leak a little bit, which is known to happen in these cars, so I figured while I am having that changed, I might as well do the baffle to see if it helps. I bought a brand new oil pan and VAC baffle (it is much easier to weld on a brand new pan instead of trying to clean, and clean some more, and then clean again with an old pan) and it was installed with the new gasket. I went back to one of the tracks with one of the trouble-corners and my oil pressure went from low 30's to high 30's in the same corner. Not to mention, I was also 4 seconds faster with new tires and suspension for the second trip. So my speed was slightly higher in the turn. All that to say, the baffle was an improvement. An accusump is likely even more of a fix to the oiling issues, but on the flip side, it adds a bit more complexity to the oiling system and you have to make sure it is working properly. I would consider adding the baffling, or one of the more sophisticated BMW systems you mention and then log the oil pressures to see if you are having any corners that are causing issues. Then from there, determine if additional oil pressure control is needed. Best of luck!

    what is your tablet mount

    • @09_motorsports
      @09_motorsports Před rokem

      It is a mount system by "Ram Mounts." The tablet holder is a "RAM Tab-Tite Spring Loaded Holder for 7" Tablets." It is attached to a "RAM Double Socket" arm, with a "Diamond Ball Base" attached to the dash and then a "RAM Ball Adapter with AMPS Plate" to connect the tablet holder to the other side of the double socket arm. They have a lot of options so you can you different configurations based on how you want to mount it. And they are really solid mounts.

    Great video and very detailed. I have one quick question. Does the top, center edge of the bumper slip into any type of retainer/clips or does it just rest there on a lip of some sort? I'm asking because my bumper has a raised portion in the center( below the license plate) and the trunk lid actually makes contact with it. I'm thinking of taking off the bumper to see if it has been installed incorrectly. Thanks!

      Good question, my bumper does the same thing. I'm not sure if there is a clip there or not. I've debated taking mine off as well, but have not done so yet. I'll let you know if I find anything out.

    How was the wiring?

      The wiring to install the wheel itself was very straightforward. I have not wired any of the buttons on the steering wheel yet. I'll be sure to update this if/when I wire in some of the car functions to the steering wheel.

    Hey! Looks like a great time and the car sounds great too! I’ve got my first track day in a few days and was wondering how you got the speed/rpm data, etc overlay on the video? Are you able to do this with MHD monitoring?

    • @team9racing
      @team9racing Před 2 lety

      Thanks! All the data comes from MHD. The video is from a GoPro. I use RaceRender to overlay the MHD data onto the video.

      @@team9racing awesome! Going to try doing the same at my track day. I assume I’ll need the Monitor License from MHD? Will I also be able to record my laps through apps like Harry’s or TrackAddict simultaneously? I tried linking my MHD OBD2 reader to TrackAddict but wasn’t able to connect 🤔

    • @team9racing
      @team9racing Před 2 lety

      @@apexpixel yes, you’ll need the monitor license. That should get you all of the channels off the OBD2 port. If you are using Harry’s or Track Addict with just the GPS, then you should be fine. But if you try and use two devices and split the OBD2 signal, it won’t work. Now if you use the same device running two apps, such as MHD in the background while you have the lap timer on screen, I’m not sure how that would work.

    • @apexpixel

      @@team9racing got it. I’ll run some tests to see what works best. Is it possible to log everything through an app like Track Addict as opposed to logging via the MHD app? I was having trouble connecting my OBDII device (from MHD) Does this have to do with the device only having wifi /no Bluetooth? Thanks for all the advice!
