Proper kumite, a joy to watch. You have to remember that these are holding back, striking with control. However there was still a bit of blood spilled. In a self defence situation, one full power strike would finish the opponent . Ippon. That is what they train for. It was often said that our blackbelts didn't like training with the brown belts because they hadn't developed proper control yet and were likely to get hit.

Point karate with kicks to legs?!

In competition I always hated those forever moments waiting to fight….in the 70’s and 80’s black belt was controlled strong contact, 2 points for head kick, one point punch, . Controlled medium contact for colored belts. We wore protective gear.

No rules, the two contender are covered in blood at the end of kumite, according to JKA rules (www.jka.or.jp/wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Tournament-Rules-Regulations-Text-2015rev.pdf), item 24b) If an element has been identified as severe and there is obvious malicious intent or if a competitor is seriously injured or damaged, a warning (Hansoku Chui ) or a disqualification (Hansoku ) can be given to the perpetrator and the other competitor is declared the winner. In this case no protections are used in fight and JKA rules are completely disattended, I am disgusted.

When I did Karate back in the 1970s it was all reverse punch now it is all jab (gyaku-zuki , kizami-zuki).

Certo tutte le arti marziali sono difficili basta guardare uno shaolin che si allena.Molte volte dai per scontato in arte marziale poi invece l’altra ti sorprende e perdi ho combattuto con un ragazzo che faceva kung fu un altra arte marziale che davo per scontata e invece mi ha messo più in difficoltà della mia arte marziale fortuna che non esiste solo il ko ma vinsi ai punti.Ma ne uscii con la gamba che mi hanno dovuto silingare e un taglio al ciglio.Chiaramente anche io con le gomitate un bel taglio in testa glielo fatto e da lì non ho mai più sottovalutato nessuna arte marziale che mi piaccia o no nel senso che se ci combatto contro do tutto il meglio che posso sin da subito e chiaramente non la sottovaluto, come facevo prima.

I'm rewatching this, and both of these guys have been trained very well. They both use open hand guards because open hands are faster than closed hands and easier to block and punch from. This is probably the best 6 point system fight I've ever seen.
