This short gave me strong vibes to Osamu Tezuka's Unico. Fittingly that this short was uploaded a month before "Unico: Awakening" (OEL Manga reboot of Unico) gets released very soon. Highly recommend getting the first volume when it releases. :)

Very lovely animation and fantastic vibes, but I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the character design. The human-like face and hair on an animal-like character always feels uncanny and wrong.

Ooh this is good. CZcams should pay some attention to this one: a skilled all-round animator... who has put the time in studying how dogs move... over the course of a degree lasting several years... can produce: about ninety seconds of high-quality animation in the style of a 1960s animator (the style is Osamu Tezuka, yes there is a brief visual quote of Miyazaki's Laputa-guardian-robot with the flowers on its back but the style is Tezuka. Miyazaki and Tezuka both use small choruses of dancing animals around a main character but they get that from Disney). The writing is spot-on because it recognizes such a short story must be simple and lean heavily on the ability of images to "tell a thousand words" (and movement to tell a million). People have made this term "orientalism" very taboo but I still mean it in the simple sense that the silent statue character looks like a Foo-dog, or it might be a Komainu, and the houses are vaguely outlined, and there is no carved writing or specific iconography to locate the story in a real culture... which cartoons have always done because they need an international audience. But surely a 90s short that'll be given away free could have (as Miyazaki did) introduced a creative vision to make the background culture distinctive. That might be a factor of time - usually what's put on CZcams has impressive background art to distract from that they can't draw movement or the story was over-ambitious. Ironically this is one of the few CZcams pieces with a central idea strong enough to carry a feature-length story - what might make The Last Winged Puppy a different story from The Last Unicorn? Maybe it's the troubling possibility, which I'd have liked to see the piece bring out more, that the winged dog is a physical creature whose species has become legendary, or a spirit-guardian whose species is vanishing due to disbelief. Or maybe a ghostly red cat drove them all into the sea: I would be available for a project like this :D
