'How to mic up concert toms', but you didn't actually tell us anything!

I was hoping to see them do a show in NYC or whatever, but it was just not to be. I of course knew Sara vaguely from Let's Active years ago, but by the time I saw Let's Active live in 1986 at The Ritz NYC, (downtown) the lineup was vastly different. I knew the Duo Jets from the famed Athens GA: Inside Out movie, which I owned the VHS copy of for years when it first came out. I've seen some of the Dex documentary on cable a while back. I'm saddened that both are now gone. I managed to at least see The Golden Palominos 3x live in their reunion period a while back, and I at least got to see the great Anton Fier live 3x since I'd also missed GP live in the 80s. Another fave drummer of mine. Meanwhile, Anton also passed away recently.

Amazing set. I'm pretty sure, that's a Signature Special Edition from the 90's with the glossy laquer finish and the rubber gaskets. This complete set with matching snare is a rarity - I don't think, they sold many of them.

Back in the early 80's, a Signature bass drum alone was $1,200

Thanks for posting this! Wow, Sara was such a real fixture in Chapel Hill, what a class act. Fascinating interview - such interesting, kind and thoughtful answers. Sara was a legitimate hero to many of us, this is great proof of that… She is missed terribly!

Hi John. I want to thank you for reposting this interview. My dad shared this with me a short time after he did this. Shortly after he passed in 2013, I searched and couldn't find it anywhere. I just happened to be looking for some of the videos of him while with the Glenn Miller band and doing Glenn Miller Time and there this was! I can't explain how good it is to be able to hear his voice after such a long time. Thank you for re-sharing this. Blessings to you.

You are an absolute legend in the Chapel Hill, NC music scene and I'm fortunate to have seen you play many times with all your great bands (though unfortunately not with Let's Active). It's also heartbreaking that Dex recently passed. Two of the all-time greats in the Chapel Hill scene who will be sorely missed.

Thank you for posting this. Sara and her brother have been blindspots in my music-listening lifetime, and I am glad to be catching up to them. Both have gone far, far, far too young. What a sweet lady she was.

I first met Sara while waiting in line for beer at a Sun Ra show at the Cat's Cradle back in the early 90s. It was a long line so we had a great conversation. After she got her beer and went off to watch the show I thought, "what a cool person!". A few years later she was working at the Music Explorium which was where I bought all my violin gear. I found it interesting that in this interview she said she is not a teacher. I actually took some drum lessons from her and trust me, she was a great teacher.

I got the standing height snare stand for my 12" practice pad rig and I love it, I haul that thing all over my house and yard one handed while its fully loaded, its actually increased how much I practice. I also picked up one of the cymbal stands and sort of regret it, I usually like to load up my stands with clamped on accessories or tilted boom cymbal stackers and the lightweight yamaha stand just doesn't have enough weight to hold anything off axis. Its a great light duty single stand if thats truly all you need out of it.

I have several pieces of Hercules hardware and to me nothing else compares,best hardware ever created bar none!!!!!
