Cornella . . . Please explain something to me: I've been painting for a number of years. Back when I started, the accepted and directed method was to start with the darks and work up to the lights. But more and more, I see videos by good painters like yourself who start with the lights and work down (so to speak). I was told and taught that starting with the lights (which includes white paint) leads to muddy colors . . . painting dark over lights, dark colors into whites equals murky color. Yet I see painter after painter doing this, and with reasonable success. If you haven't time to answer this, or don't want to, will you tell me where I can learn more about this method.
Thank you for your question! Painting dark into light…or light into dark- it really all depends as when we paint we are in the realm of relativity. I tend to key my values before I’m ready to model the form in the halftones. This means that i locate the lightest light and the darkest darks so that this contrast point can inform where the transitional halftones should land. And usually i will push the values a bit back and forth in the transition. Painting dark into light and light into dark. However- this is mostly related to the halftones moving from the shadow shape to the light. Avoid white in the shadow shape. Again- not a hard rule. There will typically be some white within the shadow shape on a white cast with ambient light in the shadow for instance. But- a receipt for muddy and chalky colors is to have too much or any white within the shadow shape. Preserve the shadow to the darkest value potential, usually with a warm hue.
