Early Morning Rain by Gordon Lightfoot
Canadian singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot released Early Morning Rain in 1964 but its genesis is a few years earlier. In 1960 he was working in Los Angeles and would go out to Los Angeles International Airport and watch the planes land and take off on rainy days. The image of flights taking off into the overcast sky was still with him when, in 1964, he was caring for his 5 month old son and he put him in his crib and wrote this song. Lightfoot’s own 1965 record never charted but recordings by Peter Paul and Mary, George Hamilton IV and Elvis did and the song gave a big boost to his career as a songwriter. The imagery is what makes this song great. You know you really can’t jump a jet plane like you can a freight train. So I best be on my way in the early morning rain.

Song For A Winter’s Night by Gordon Lightfoot
zhlédnutí 206Před 16 hodinami
This song was recorded by Lightfoot while he was on tour in 1967 in Cleveland, Ohio on a hot summer night and he was missing his wife, Brita Ingegerd Olaisson and winter in Canada. I’m sure there were a lot of people who would rather be in Canada in the winter than Cleveland in the summer. What does that say about Cleveland?
Da Glendy Burke by Stephen Foster

Stephen Foster was, according to Wikipedia, known as “The Father of American Music”. He wrote some of the most well known songs in American history. Among those songs are Oh Suzanna, Old Kentucky Home, Old Folks at Home, otherwise known as Swanee River, Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair, Camptown Races and Beautiful Dreamer. He wrote over 300 songs for parlor music and minstrel shows. He died in...

So between the new strings, (very light 9-46),new back plate, new whammy bar, and some WD-40 contact spray to de-oxidize the switch, I spent about $35. Kind of a bargain for effectively a new guitar. The neck is perfect. The frets seem unworn and level. I don’t think I could make them any better. The pickups all work the way they were designed, as do the controls-volume, tone and switch. The ou...

Written in 1986, this song was recorded by John himself, then by Kim Carnes in 1988, and as a duet with Nancy Griffith, who featured it in her live concerts. It has become a favorite. Both John and Nancy are missed as performers and prolific songwriters.
Cowgirl In The Sand by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Young wrote this song in 1969 while he had the flu and a high fever. That might explain why there are so many different interpretations of exactly what the lyrics mean. Is Young the cowgirl having come from Canada to Southern California where the weather was warm and life was literally a Beach? Is it about a woman or even three different women?
Modifying My BYA (Bet Your Ash) Guitar

Just an update. I added a second pickup to a guitar that I built from scratch 3 years ago. I also did some other things to make it play better, including re-leveling and re-crowning the frets, rebuilding the pick guard, raising it up so the pickups are the correct distance from the strings, adding a three way switch, and adjusting the bridge/saddle for better accuracy and intonation. As my luth...
Imagine written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono
zhlédnutí 87Před měsícem
Released in 1971, Imagine has been hailed by many as one of the greatest songs ever written. But it hasn’t been without controversy. Some thought it to be subversive, denouncing religion and nationalism and promoting Marxism or Communism in a phrase from its final verse “imagine no possessions”. I remember that criticism when I was a teenager. Lennon wasn’t appreciated by law enforcement in the...

Jimmy said that he wrote this song while traveling to San Francisco to open for Country Joe McDonald at The Lion’s Share Club and that he wrote it at the Howard Johnson’s in Mill Valley. He has also stated that he thought this song might have saved his life in that writing it helped bring him out of a deep depressive episode that could have led to suicide. “Music has charms to soothe a savage b...

Playing my newly updated Coffincaster, now a solid body electric guitar with a bolted on neck. I changed the bridge and added a volume and tone control. I re-leveled the frets and lowered the action. I built a new nut and cut the slots more precisely. The resonator and internal springs are history. I kept the three strings and the pickup from before as well as the locking tuning machines.

So, here it is. Using the general shape of my Ovation Balladeer, without the parabolic fiberglass back and sides, I have finished a full sized acoustic 6-string guitar. I spent very little on materials, plywood, salvaged oak and leftover ash. The only actual wood I purchased was the black locust fret board (and I have enough left to make 3 or 4 more guitars). Maybe $50 total. I used a unique me...

From 1971, Don McLean starts American Pie remembering when he was a 13 year old paper boy folding his morning papers to be delivered and saw the headline reporting the deaths of three rock and roll icons, Richie Valens, Big Bopper and Buddy Holly. February 3rd, 1959 will always be remembered as “The Day The Music Died”. The rest of the song (according to McLean) is an impressionist poem about t...
The Times They Are A-Changing by Bob Dylan

Perhaps the most enduring “protest song” Dylan ever wrote, The Times They Are A Changing’s less than specific lyrics make it sort of one size fits all to protest the status quo, whatever that might be. Younger people gaining power while their elders lose it. Global warming (he wrote it near the end of 1963, talk about prescience). Income inequality. The Vietnam War. Every war since based on lie...

Playing my 3/4 size solid body electric that I made from scratch about 2 1/2 years ago. It has a scale length of 22 3/4", 2 inches shorter than a Les Paul and nearly 3 inches shorter than a Stratocaster or Telecaster. With a single "hot rail" humbucker, it is very easy to play and would be especially useful for someone with small hands. It's been over a year since I played it on a video. During that time I have done some work on it, adjusting the nut slots, re-leveling the frets and putting on heavier strings and raising the pitch a little to increase string tension, all to make it perform better near the headstock. I am constantly making adjustments to guitars that I have built. One of the reasons that I build them. Because if I "ruin" the instrument, well, I'll just make another. As I gain experience, skill and tools, the instruments get better. Win Win. (And I haven't ruined one yet.)
Beautiful. Good job Brother! Enjoyed playing music with you the other day at the Runaway Brew Pub.
Thank you for this! I wanted my daughter (now a teen!) to hear the original as my Gran used to sing to me when I was a wee girl! You made my day! 😊
I like it!
A couple of clarifications. Even though I set the neck completely straight, when string tension was introduced, the relief was perfect. The springs in the back were installed wrong. They need to be parallel or they won’t all be engaged and the tremolo bridge won’t work properly. All the nut slots were cut pretty well so I didn’t mess with them. Noise is reduced when in positions 2 and 4 because the combination of two pickups out of phase creates a humbucker effect. My baritone guitar uses 3 humbucker pickups in a Stratocaster configuration.
Looks great. I talked to Jordan yesterday, so he’ll be interested in what you’ve done. We talked about my six string banjo and he said my bridge was in the wrong place. I’ll ask him what he wants to do with it. Thanks for taking this on.
Interesting!
Beautiful!
🎉
Just love this. John Prine wrote it and I was introduced to it from Nancie Griffith. Nice selection and nice work!
Excellent version many thanks.
Playing our Cordoba Koa Koa classical guitar. Entirely constructed of Koa wood (top and sides), it’s very bright compared to spruce or mahogany. And the fingerboard is very wide with a very flat radius (almost none). Takes a little getting used to.
Justin should pay you royalties for promoting his books so well! Just saying! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You Tube.
This man nails it- love the way his timing is on the travis picking- not to mention his guitar is beautiful along with the simplicity of his sweet voice
Thanks. I built this guitar from scratch using locally sourced materials. Plywood from Home Depot, oak from dumpsters, ash killed by the Emerald Ash Borer, and Black locust.
@@robinleebraun7739TY - I would have never guessed the guitar was homemade- that must be why the guitar has a special uniqueness amazing looking! I love your style - will keep watching your videos- your a inspiration
Nicely done 👍
I've played guitar most of my life, but just recently started singing. This is inspiring. I put a few songs out there as I progress. Keep it up!
@@avpljm155thanks for watching. Glad you’re inspired. Be careful with covers. Some copyright holders don’t want to allow covers at all. Don’t cover The Eagles, Bryan Adams, Led Zeppelin. A few others. Copyright strikes can cause you to lose your channel.
I’m glad to see you😊 I love Reina bel cid too❤ You look nice🎉
I like it! Your guitar sounds great!
Thanks, Blaine.
The first time I ever heard the song was when I worked at Northstar Camp, back in 1979.
It's always good if it's Neil Young! Good stuff Brother!
Playing my 1973 Ovation Balladeer. In 1971, this was a very popular instrument played by Glen Campbell, Paul McCartney, America, Paul Simon, and Jim Croce.
I'm sure Biden and your hero Fauci would be very proud 👏
That would make me very happy as they are both heroes. I just read parts of Fauci’s book. The part where Trump thought he could end the pandemic by shining light up people’s buttholes. Seriously. The stupidity of the former president is astounding. Says a lot about those who support him.
Lenny LeBlanc and Pete Carr are two friends of mine (even though Pete passed away), but they’d both be proud of this cover of their song. Nice job.
Wow! Thanks.
Very nice Robin!
Interesting!
❤❤❤
A really lovely cover, its lovely how your understated accompaniment works so well for this song. A very interesting history as well, I hadn't appreciated that. I'm very humbled you have my book on your bookshelf, thank you. Cheers Dave
Thanks, Dave. I was imagining (no pun intended) a music box playing a simple accompaniment with just a few notes one at a time. Just watched your latest ScrapperCaster video. It’s really coming along.
Might just be the best song ever written! Nice work, love the guitar. Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You Tube.
Sweet rendition...
Nice instrument, i have a tenorbaritone, and is tuned A D G C
Thanks for the input. I tuned this instrument Chicago style so I wouldn’t have to learn new shapes. This is exactly the same tuning as my baritone guitar but with only 4 strings. So it’s kind of a baritone baritone ukulele (with a 24.75 inch scale length)
Beautiful!
Thanks, Blaine.
Great job Robin! It's one of my favorite songs! Pat

Very nice!!
Almost no acoustic sound from this now solid body electric. In addition to other changes, I tuned it up to A from G to increase string tension. Still tuned to an open chord.
