Hello, Thanks for the visit to my channel. I make videos to share my expertise and my folly apparently. I have worked as a mechanic since 1970 starting out on motorcycles and then auto dealerships. Switched my vocation and avocations in 1996 when I began teaching Recording Technologies at a local community college and working on cars for fun and extra cash. I also worked at an electronics firm to hone those skills. Truly a "jack of all trades, master of none" life's work, although, I have a good reputation as a mechanic and recording engineer. Folks refer to me as a "Mr. Fixit" cuz' I take on the repair jobs that other people have given up on. I intend to share those "Fixit" projects with my viewers. Hopefully you will learn along with me as I figure it out.

Hi does the front windshield have to be removed also?
Yes, the headliner is glued to the pinch weld.
@@donsmanufactory thank you
I think the issue was that there were NO standards from any of these cars. Each year they found the least expensive provider and the specs were vague or non existent. And we have learned that year to year they would use last years parts until they ran out and then used this years pieces, that way even cars of the same year had different stuff. I do not know if you can make a standard piece for all. I applaud your engineering , great piece with no rotational distortion. I cannot believe how sophisticated this is, I literally stuffed this think in back in the 70's . NO wonder I was welding points
I think things were kinda ok before the after market companies raced to the bottom as the market shrank. Welding points! Possible resistor wire or shorted primary coil winding? Points must have been switching high current. I Looked up condenser specs, .21 to .25 mf so there’s a lot more lee way than I thought. 20% parts are the cheapest. Thanks Wally.
good video thanks
Thanks Dave
Mr. Don that ac noise is not a problem at all, thank you for sharing this Information.
Thank you Mr Dark, hope you are doing well.
Glad im not the only one with a messy workbench!
Yeah, only clean it when I need too. 😂😂😂
nice work be nice to have dist machine
Absolutely! I have looked locally for one of the bench top models. Kinda gave up though maybe I should try again. Thought about making one. Thanks for spurring me on.
Great job, Don 😊
Thanks, it’s a lot of work to attempt to prove my point from my last video. Making work for myself… Love your channel by the way. 😊
It says in the timing gears instructions you don't need the spacer. It is built into the cam gear. They put instructions in the box for a reason.
😂😂😂 Did not see instructions, parts came as a kit from Edelbrock. As he said, internet dumbness on display. Thanks Bruce.
It's in there too
My dad had a 69 t bird with a fe engine. 429 i think it use to bend push rod all the time. One of my first experience with engine's. Long time ago.
@@michaelpagliarini4785 - Thanks Michael FYI a 429 is a 385 series big block. FE is like all them other smaller ones 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427 & 428 if I remember correctly. What was causing the bent push rods?
@@donsmanufactory if I remember correctly I think was sticky valves, carbon build up .
great catch on the idler arm, big bump steer issue. Nice looking car. did the car come standard with a double timing chain? In my car I switched to double chain and it too had clearance issues that I had to accommodate. I have to laugh as you have the same relationship with your older brother as I do. Calls me over to help on his 69 fairlane Cobra
Hi Wally, I’m pretty sure it had the silent type with nylon cam gear. Twas really sloppy. My bro is a practical joker, I have to stay on my toes around him.
has anyone else had problems with the glass rolling up fine until it get the last 10% of the range and then the front gets caught and the back bucks up but then the front rolls up the rest of the way? and then the same happens when you start to roll it down, gets stuck but once it starts going down its fine. Anyone else had this?
Sounds like the stops need to be adjusted. Hard to say without seeing it in person.
Thanks Mr. Don
No, thank YOU Mr Dark. 😂
This is the best expiation or point systems
Thanks Jerry
marine engine ran 5000 rpm all day long used 2 springs and no vacuum advance
Thanks Dave, Absolutely, no need for a vacuum advance on marine applications. There’s so much drag / load on the engine there’s not much vacuum.
Nice work, I have had enough of poor quality points and condenser's I try to look for new old stock when possible.
Thanks Ed, Those Echlin points are first rate. Strong pivot and good spring. Old stock Motorcraft are hard to find.
where were you 50 years ago...LOL... my 68 390 GT car used to burn points all the time, almost welding together. All that time I did not know that it probably was the condenser failing to absorb the coil voltage or not enough time to discharge the coil across the plugs ( see I learned something from you) and points were probably arcing voltage to ground. I remember having a nail file in the glovebox to "clean" the points. Today I am running pertronics for the reasons mentioned above, I guess I had such a bad taste I did not want to deal with it, but I did screw the plate down so I do not get any movement. the only advance is centrifugal. Great video as always
Thanks Wally. I was here, where were you? 😂 FYI - the good rotor in this video was made in Canada, the bad one was from USA. Cheap aftermarket parts killed off standard ignition and is killing off modern stuff too as we race to the bottom.
@@donsmanufactory that is because Canada cannot afford to upgrade and is still using stuff from the 60's . Ha Ha.. unfortunately more things are being made in china.
I was way off in my attendance estimate. Talked to an official who said today (6/19/2024) 680 cars attended. The season opener shown in the video (6/5/2024) there were 1167 cars.
Ouch!
Well, no problem parking it in a lot now, it’s pre-disastered. Thanks Jerry
That's Murphy's law.
Oh yes, Murphy is alive and well, been residing at my house for decades. Thanks Michael
Ouch! I'm sorry to see that happened.
Me too! The last time I painted her, back in 1987, she got her first ding the day I pulled her out of the booth and parked her in the back lot to bake in the sun. So maybe it’s tradition. Thanks Mr Dark
I like your style Don. I have a 66 i'm restoring and have wrestled with the quarter glass and have the scares just like you. I changed the rollers and got em working well. I have probably 6 hours per side labor installing, reinstalling, adjusting, polishing the stainless, polishing the glass, and lubing the tracks. Oh yeah,l i had to remove the seats for access, and removed the door panels to get to the shit< Lol Nice how-to Don
Thanks, in the back of my mind I keep thinking there’s NO way ford fought those 1/4 glass installs like I did. I must be missing the “trick.”
I learned a lot watching this one. Thanks Don.
You’re welcome. I’m glad you got something out if it, makes me happy.
Fantastic video! Thank you.
You are very welcome. So the length was ok?
Didnt bother me.
great video thanks
Thank you…
T.V. is close enough for me!
I hear ya, I was on the distant sailboat shooting the video.
You are very technical, to be sure! I was not aware of the different types of manufacturing of ball joints! AC Delco joints? I never knew they manufactured ball joints!
I wasn’t either, the only reason I went after the ball joints was discovering ones I bought wouldn’t work. Thanks for watching.
Good break down man thx
Thanks
I ran Redline MTL in a Jeep with an AX-15 and it was magic for improving those rough cold morning shifts.
Thanks Mark, I will be trying that asap. Having fresh oil has improved the TKX a lot. Amazing, can’t wait to try the MTL.
How’s your convertible coming along?
No major progress yet, too much house work / life getting in the way. Replaced warped/leaking valve covers, fixed a bunch of goofy wiring issues. Bought the parts for a 5spd swap but haven't had the time to install it.
@@MarkKempton- Ooooo, going to row the gears, nice. Hang onto that small block C6. It’s worth a penny or 2
It might be... If it wasn't an fmx :0
When you get to be our age, going to funerals seem to be the "norm"! Other obligations are keeping me from getting my 66 GT primered and painted. So warm in Florida right now its uncomfortable working in the shop🙂
Thanks Richard, be glad you aren’t in Texas. 😁 Hope things work out for you.
sorry your loss good video try a magnet in drain oil
Thanks Dave
Sorry for all of the life issues, seems like working on ours cars keep our minds busy and keeps us productive.
Thanks for understanding Ed, I know this sounds funny with all the issues with parts I’ve had BUT lately my garage is where peace and sanity reside. Maybe I was born to tinker.
Sorry for your loss. Wipers aren't supposed to clunk? I don't foresee ever using the wipers on the mustang when I get it on the road. What amazes me is how small the wiper moors are now and how much faster they wipe and with way bigger wiper blades dragging it down. And I really miss not having machine shop at my disposal anymore. I keep looking at used lathes here but not much in the way of good ones here.
Being a 3rd generation ford tech, my dad in the 60s worked at a ford dealership. The noise you hear is basically normal. Customers complained so much about the wiper motor noise that the wiper was designed to go in the engine compartment in later years. Fun fact.
Thanks James, fun fact.
Sorry for your loss Sir. I've never rebuilt a wiper motor before. Looks complex. I also have a 66 Mustang 2+2 FB.
Thank you. It wasn’t too difficult.
I’d love to see pics of your Stang project. I almost did a coupe to fastback conversion.
Sorry about your cousin! Very informative vid, always interested in unique problems. Entertaining as usual
Thanks Richard, Ed was a really cool guy. When we visited him in hospice he was still figuring on getting out of there and back at it. Might have been saying that to us to keep up the positivity, I dunno. 5 cancers two of which were stage 4, not a chance.
glad you are home safe and sound, sorry for your loss. Wow ,your wiper motor is so different than mine was in 68. totally different parking mechanism. Glad the brushes did not pop like modern electric motors. And YES you made the right call on the power tour, I know it is a hard decision and somewhat disappointing but it would be difficult enough in a modern vehicle with all its creature comforts , never mine a 60 year old car. my wife and I also find we can no longer be in a car for long periods of time either. Take care
Thanks Wally, I still want to make it back east to meet up with you and Barry. Was hoping to combine the power tour with my road trip. We may be old geezers but we still git er done. Maybe later this summer.
@@donsmanufactory It might make more sense to meet in the middle somewhere. Give it some thought and we can look at some options
That’s nice of you man. Good dude
Thanks Stephen, Hope all is well with you over the pond.
The video you did of the felt installation on the window track is terrible all you show is high speed video of ripping it out putting it in at such a high speed you get no information out of the video your videos are absolutely terrible thank you
Sorry, CZcams did not promote long form videos at that time. All the images are there, you can change the playback speed to see the detail. Always a compromise between long boring or fast paced presentation.
Your videos are really educational at all because you showed before and after in high speed not describing any of the techniques or how you achieved the repair it's just broken and then fixed that's all you show in your videos
Sorry it doesn’t work for you. As I said in the video I just followed the Muggy Weld instructions off their website. If you need more detailed information consult their videos.
do you have sticky tires on?
Hi Dave, Nope, Betsy has Continental Extreme Contact tires which are great on the road but not so great at the track apparently. I need to get some slicks.
Pretty cool. I wasn't sure if you missed a gear or if the clutch was slipping. That ranger is quick! at least I think it's a ranger.
Hi Barry, That wasn’t the clutch slipping, it was the tires breaking loose. Still fun though even when I can’t seem to hit 3rd gear.
Thanks for the ride, felt like we were in the car with you.
Thanks Ed, I’ll be on the jodaddysgarage live stream tonight.
Thank you
No, thank YOU. 😁👍 Thanks Tim
Oregon is beautiful from the driver’s seat, and your brother has a nice 65! How cool is that to meet up and take a few laps. Safe travels Mr. Don hope all is well with the family.
Thanks Mr Dark, still out of town.
I saw part 1 ocrush sleeve, it cannot be used again. Must be replaced. I really like the fix you made eliminating the crush sleeve and maching a spacer and then using shims! That was brilliant! So if a bearing race ends up spinning somehow, you can use whats called a speedy sleeve. Can a speedy sleeve be used for that application? I don't know. But its something for you to keep in mind. I'm very glad you got those gears going smoothly! And yes, I would have ended up using 0.027 shims for that patten judging by what I could see on your video. And no, I am not a professionl gear man. On your differial build, seeing this video corrects my assumption from my comment there that once gears make noise, they will always have to be replaced. I stand corrected.
Hello, I would hold off on that correction. Those speedway gears never got quiet. I could change the speed that the noise occurred but I couldn’t eliminate it. The gears that ended up quiet was a different used set. I think maybe you are correct that noisy gears were either machined wrong or worn oddly and will most likely remain noisy.
I'm gonna watch part 2. Before I do, did you clean out the axle tubes from the contaminated gear lube? Also, my understanding is that once if gears make noise, they'll always make noise. I have a 66 Mustang fastback that's been parked in my garage since 2006, I've got to get it going! You're inspiring me.
Hi, Yes I cleaned the axle housing. I just push a rag through the tubes since the axles are out.
Nice work, Don. I have a 1966 Fairlane door with the same problem. I bought a set of patches like you for a '67 Mustang (the parts fit identically to the Fairlane door latch). I was debating how to attach these plates and see that you pretty much did what I was planning. Your video gives me confidence to proceed. Thanks!👍
Thanks Hugh, That’s why I make these videos, to help others. Makes it all worthwhile.
I like Heim joints but yeah they aren't a one size fits all use it everywhere joint. I looked for NOS ball joints at the swapmeet and didn't see any but we called early due to rain.
Thanks for trying Robert. I may have located AC Delco nos ball joints w/2 piece ball (oem copies). Won’t know until I see them. Have ordered about $200 worth of ball joints.
like work on control arms thanks
Thanks Dave.
even in the corba which could run to 7000 RPM I NEVER power shifted. Always worried about over rev. NOw I was running an electronic ignition but did not have a limiter. as far at the ET how was the gearing in the rear end before you did all the rear end work?? Of course I was running 4.11 on the track but switched to a lower ratio on the street. best of luck on the control arms, I guess another alignment is coming up. Good luck
Thanks Wally, Betsy was running 3.25 gears, street tires and a toploader when it turned high 13’s @ 106 mph. Before this restoration Betsy had 3.0 gears, 14” street tires and the T5. She turned 14.2 @ 102 with my daughter riding along. Another consideration, Woodburn was no prep back in the day which always worked better with street tires. PIR was prepped and Betsy turned slower times there. Don’t know if I’d speed shift a Cobra. Seems like it would just light the tires off. 😅
