      In Exeter they aren't really widely planted, which is a shame as they have such interesting flowers and then the bonus of all of the fruit. I've been trying to find white mulberries in Exeter but haven't come across any yet. There is a medium sized Black mulberry in the court yard of Exeter Cathedral which is where I did most of my study on this tree. www.exetertrees.uk/black-mulberry.html

      This shrub was in my backgarden - it put on such a good show of flowers I decided to upload a few videos. Most of my study is of trees and shrubs in the various public green spaces across Exeter. I haven't spotted one of these yet in a local park which is a shame as they are real stunners when in flower.

    Is this normal? I have the same tree in my front garden for the last 40 years. It still blooms but I noticed the trunk has this open splitting of bark.

    • @ExeterTrees
      @ExeterTrees Před 7 měsíci

      With more mature cherry trees it's normal for the bark to have these spilts. If the spilts are quite extreme it could be frost cracks - but usually there would be causes for this such as fungi / pathogens or stress factors such as blade damage (lawn mowers / hedge strimmers). Some cherry trees are also grafted so the lower part of the tree is different that the upper part of the tree - which can lead to interesting bark patterns.

    This tree seems to be infected with Ash Dieback disease.

    • @ExeterTrees
      @ExeterTrees Před 7 měsíci

      Quite possibly. I didn't have time to fully check it out as was just walking by that part of Exeter. The reduced sections of canopy are concerning. The next time I am passing by I'll check the bark more closely as well as the buds. This is a female ash tree which study shows they do seem to be more prone to total failure from Ash Dieback compared to all-male trees. The parks and green spaces team will be doing their usual inspection of the park over the next few months so will see what the outcome for this fairly young Ash tree will be. It will be a shame if this tree is removed as it's in a very visible spot.

      actually l like the real one the best, but as far as the filters go, Udnie is also cool. and Waves is cool too. it would also be really neat to see pictures changing more quickly from one filter to another… I’ve always wanted to do this but not sure what software I’d use for video since I’ve mostly seen these kind of effects applied to still pictures

    • @ExeterTrees
      @ExeterTrees Před 8 měsíci

      The AI effects are pretty good - takes a long time to even render short clips of 30 seconds. I've always used VSDC for video editing and the paid version offers these new AI effects which I was keen to try out. Most of my study is short clips of different parts of trees but I do have a fair amount of photos too. I believe the VSDC editor does offer a slideshow feature for photos - will have to give this a go later and see how it goes.

    Tonight, while eating some walnuts (mixed with other things including raisons), one bite in particular tasted foul! I wondered whether I had eaten a weevil larvae. I didn't notice anything in the bag nor in the remaining nuts in my hand. And continued to chow down. But in the next "grab" of nuts from the bag, noticed a LARVAE/WORM! I gasped, dropped the nuts and quickly stood up from the computer! I think I may have eaten one of this little Walnut weevil's slimly babies! YUCK! 🤮🤮🤮 (Looks like the chickens will be receiving a bag of TREATS tomorrow!)

    Is a mulberry tree In a pot a good idea?

    • @ExeterTrees
      @ExeterTrees Před 8 měsíci

      Hi there. I've never grown mulberries so can't offer any experience on the matter. However, like most types of fruit there are often lots of different cultivars and some of these are better suited for small growing conditions - including pots and containers. This is a good example: www.suttons.co.uk/vegetable-fruit-plants/all-fruits/mulberry-dwarf-bush-charlotte-russe-mojo-berry_MH5436 Typically mulberry trees are classed as small trees but they can still reach heights of up to 10m - so no good for a pot! The dwarf type cultivars are great for smaller gardens and for the 'Charlotte Russe' cultivar may only grow up to 1.5m tall - but still have the benefits of a good yield of fruit. Mulberries are a bit special as some are dioecious so either all male or female. if you get an all male tree - then you get lots of flowers but no fruit. Some Mulberries are monoecious so the same tree has both male and female flowers. I imagine most of the dwarf cultivars are all female and some are even seedless (like 'Charlotte Russe') As long as they are in a good spot with lots of sunlight and good compost and well watered for the first year or so then you should have a happy mulberry plant. Also, with these sorts of cultivars you can often get fruit within the first few years so unlike the standard type which could easily take over 10 years to produce any fruit you may get some within the first year. The lifespan of cultivars can vary quite a bit too - they are not typically long lived, but even so you could expect to get a good 50 years or so. Hope that helps Terrence.

      Hi there. This Grey poplar is actually on the edge of an industrtial estate in Exeter. I have been back since so unsure of how these trees are doing. They were probably around 12m to 15m at a guess. There was also quite a lot Aspen nearby and also a few white poplars too.
