    If the simulation logic doesn't run during a replay then this isn't a realistic benchmark

    • @BenchmarkOdysseys
      @BenchmarkOdysseys Před dnem

      Real-time compute is very similar to replay playback, especially with iRacing. However, the dynamic interaction with AI or human opponents is a big variable and directly affects real-time performance (from run to run). The proximity to other cars is perhaps the most significant contributor to performance variance. This is especially true in triple screens (with proper view ports) and VR, and with mirrors enabled.

    i noticed going from oculus VR to open XR (which was necessary in order to even use fpsvr app) resulted in higher render value and also more gpu usage i tried openxr toolkit and it has no foveated rendering, maybe thats why? how did you connect with your quest 3 and use fpsxr app to record the data? questlink with cable? does steam vr need to be running? also, my iracing is separate from steam. is that a problem? thanks

    • @BenchmarkOdysseys
      @BenchmarkOdysseys Před dnem

      OpenXR often forces the iRacing 'R' value to your headsets refresh rate (11.1ms for 90Hz). Foveated rendering is not available on Radeon cards. I could only get fpsVR to work as a Steam application runing SteamVR (with OpenXR runtime) on the Valve Index. The Oculus results I show are just normal FPS values captured with CapFrameX.

    Appreciate all the work you put in. I think it’s important to highlight that in 1080p you’re extremely cpu limited for the 7900xtx which not necessarily indicates gpu performance and can therefore be a bit misleading. Good video tho!

    • @BenchmarkOdysseys
      @BenchmarkOdysseys Před 5 dny

      Thanks :) Yes, albeit still strange to see the 7900XTX struggle relative to 4080S when CPU is suppose to be limiting performance. I had time to quickly verify that toggling off Game Mode, HAGS, ReBar didn't matter. Toggling on custom tuning of GPU and VRAM didn't help performance. All that suggests an inherent Radeon driver inefficiency. AMD just released 24.8.1 Adrenalin, so I will try those and compare next week.

    Thanks for doing this Matt! One weird thing with both rF2 and LMU s that when Post Effects (or maybe Special Effects) on anything above medium your performance can really suffer. For this reason I have them both set to medium. I don't know why, it's just a really resource intensive setting. Like cubemaps on iRacing. With shadows on medium, detail settings on ultra and reflections on low I'm locked at 120fps on my 3440x1440 using a 6700XT and 5600.

    Thanks for putting in the benchmarking work. As a 7900xtx user i am very curious why the frame rate tends to be lower in cpu limited scenarios. I mean nvidia with an amd cpu is def the clear choice for sim racing. Even the community is on the same page. Its crazy if you being up amd in the sim racing community. Nvidia may not even realize but its like 95% nvidia so yeah. But I do believe overall it does perform better in sim racing titles. Yet amd cpus perform better lol. Also the fact its so close anyways in raster with nvidia not choosing it doesnt make sense when you get all the features instead of just fsr. So even in amd won or edged it out. Nvidia imo would still make sense for the extras they offer and upcoming sim titles that will be utilizing thise things.

    • @layingblacklines
      @layingblacklines Před 7 dny

      Depends on budget. I just bought a 7700xt. No way would I use that money for an 8gb 4060 with 30% less performance. NVIDIA is great, but really you're starting with 4070S

    • @layingblacklines
      @layingblacklines Před 7 dny

      @@reviewforthetube6485 Yeah and conversely if I had that kind of money I don't think I'd spend it on an AMD for sim racing. Really it's the lack of VRAM that screws NVIDIA's mid range. It's not until you're spending enough to get a 7800XT that you get more than 8GB with NV. From that point onwards it makes more and more sense going NV. Particularly if you play iRacing in VR or triples, thanks to SMP and SPS.

    • @reviewforthetube6485
      @reviewforthetube6485 Před 7 dny

      @layingblacklines yeah exaclty and very true. Believe me I'm not an nvidia shill. I would happily get me a 6700xt or 6800xt if that was my budget. But at the higher end. The fact you get everything with nvidia just makes sense to choose a 4080 super over a 7900xtx purely because you get dlss, dlaa, nvidia frame gen and still ahve access to all of amd fsr and frame gen. So you get all instead of half of the features and you get the ray tracing on top. That's just logical thinking imo. Instead of actually being brand bias. I'll give amd credit though out of the box there is a very nice like. Nvidia has gotten much better now but it does hdr a bit different and sometimes menus and things don't look as good but in game it's incredible. You do need to dial it in and sometimes using rtx hdr is amazing even compared to native hdr. The only issue is it can be more demanding. I'm finding I found how to dial in normal hdr and now I'm on love with it. The way it handles lighting is truely game changing now for my preference.

What laptop specs might run dual 4K at 100 FPS in iracing at a detail level with 4K? Else, how might it look dialed down to 1440P leaving it to the monitor to scale up dumbly or cleverly? @BenchmarkOdysseys Před 21 dnem

      Increasing render resolution shifts the computation burden to the GPU. That's why I tested at lower resolution, to avoid a GPU bottleneck. Most reviewers of CPUs for pancake gaming will use 1080p to showcase the differences. Benchmarking at 4K usually isn't insightful (techpowerup always does that, check their CPU reviews). But VR is more complicated than monitor gaming. So it would be interesting to know if CPUs do perform similar when bound to GPU performance.

      @@rinkumultani6515 Yes I agree, Valve Index does feel 'dated' now. Mine is very dependable, however, and always works even when Quest 3 lets me down. "Without sacrifice" and "flawless" are not reasonable goals with VR racing, especially with iRacing. For example, I have helped multiple users with RTX 4090, and compromises in settings and quality always have to be made. The fastest GeForce card you can afford will be the best option for VR and iRacing.

    I was looking for your other video comparing different games with the mid-level NVIDIA vs mid-level AMD as I remember some sims preferring one over the other. Like iRacing preferred AMD while ACC preferred NVIDIA. Was wondering if you plan to do a similar test for Le Mans Ultimate? Like if you mainly run LMU and want to get the best mid-level card for that sim are you better off going with an NVIDIA or AMD? For triples I was thinking, but would really be interested in whatever results. There's a couple funny things happening with like mirrors costing next to nothing, but going from Medium special effects to High bringing a system to it's knees.

    MSI Afterburner has been causing stuttering for years, I surprised it took you this long to figure out, no offense. How did you connect the 7900xtx to 3 monitors? Specifically the USBc. Did you use a usbc to DP or hdmi cable?

    • @BenchmarkOdysseys
      @BenchmarkOdysseys Před měsícem

      The 7900 XTX I tested (XFX Speedster) has 3 DP outputs and 1 HDMI, so I didn't use adapters. You can buy cables that go USBc to HDMI or DP, usually +$30 USD because you need high bandwidth if driving 4K at 144Hz.

    You are one of a few people who know what you are talking about. Thank you. Let me add. My intensive experience is also frustrating. The complexity is even greater as VR performance varies per track, and the biggest problem is consistency. In my VR quest 3, some tracks are awesome, but at one turn, I get that annoying stuttering. My conclusion is that with a less perfect setup, it is kind of too hard to achieve a good VR experience. Lowering settings does not eliminate issues but just lowers them a little. You need a 4090, which I have, and the fastest CPU available with wifi 6e .... to have a near-optimal experience. VR is still a way from being perfect. Let's not forget that iRacing may need to optimize some of the tracks for VR, especially during fog and rain. My experience is the best VR projection software is Steam, but it requires a lot of CPU power. Note that Steam shines, especially with openXR. Still, the best for iRacing is the quest link cable, with OpenXR, which provides the lowest latency. Once I upgrade my CPU, I should use Quest link cable+, openXR toolkit, +Steam for projection, and iRacing, all on maxed-up settings. Yes, the experience is close to real driving 🚗. A small interesting observation is once latency is low, the control of the car becomes so amazing. That is what all top racers have, but they avoid mentioning it much. You feel immediately once the car oversteers, and correcting that becomes much easier. Sure not less than 120fps.
