Austin Butler for the win! Masters of the Air.
There have been a few interviews lately with Austin Butler and Callum Turner about their competition on who can get in the B-17 the quickest. Austin won by a long shot. Here is the video that I shot on set of his win. This was in the studio mock-up so trying it in a real B-17 was their next challenge.
It was a real pleasure, teaching these kids on MOTA, how to look like they could fly a B-17, Navigate, drop bombs and shoot guns. Thanks to Gary Goetzman, Michael Faley, Stephen Rosenbaum, I was a technical advisor for the 9 months of filming and I really enjoyed their enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge of what these heroes from our Greatest Generation did in the skies over Europe.

Raw video of WWII US Navy PV veteran Pat Patteson flying our museum's 1945 Lockheed PV-2D Harpoon just as he did in WWII. Pat came along with us for a Veterans Day flight over the San Francisco Bay Area on November 11th, 2014 at about 11am. It would be crazy to see go pro footage from inside, but I don’t know if it’s possible.
Oldie
That looks like Wheatley
i didn't know the ball pops out 😮
Who is watching this in 2024
pov: procede a ver a un jugador de minecraft volando con elytras xd
Wonder how many times they heard “great kid. Don’t get cocky”.
THE LAAT GUN IS REAL
The wheel was so fast that the holes stay still😊
Therapist: Wheatley with a gun isn’t real he can’t hurt you. Wheatley with a gun:
Outstanding !!!!!!!!
That's awesome, my favorite heavy bombers ball turret retracts
Magnifique
30 kimongo.
Wow, y’all really went to the lengths to weld cameras to the plane like in GMod
Those ww2 sonar operators were hearing hundreds these things full power must have been quite a sound.
Thank you for showing how a real engine works! There aren't enough videos like this.
'bomber camp'; w-nkers/tRumptards/man-children...
Those guys had bigger balls than their turrets !!😮😮
Well that was just irritating....we want to see what you see.....not a go pro on the end of a gun..
I just discovered this today and it look ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! I've been a passionate fan of the B-17 since discovering its existence when I was a kid buying a Revell model kit at the local toy store. Building that model and seeing the inner workings of the craft sparked my imagination. It is my favorite airplane of all time. I have had the good fortune to see a couple of B-17s at local air shows (including Aluminum Overcast) but never once have I ever heard of the existence of Bomber Camp until now. I am absolutely blown away to know there's a dedicated organization out there who have done the impossible and managed to keep all that vintage WWII equipment functional. I'm drooling. It has always been a lifelong dream of mine to fly in that iconic airplane but now that I know it can be done as a full-fledged mission I'm going to need to start saving!!!
It’s crazy expensive but I’m sure if the money was saved up it will be a day to remember
Richard Marion Otto, my father in law did this job . I have a list of his missions. Cant imagine operating 2 50 caliber machine guns while under fire, sitting inside a ball turret. The balls on these men!
Lifelong fan of the B17, but that retractable turret is awesome! Why didn’t they make the B17’s retractable? I’m guessing the bulky airframe of the B24 allowed for this where the B17 could not. Roll up bomb bay doors are pretty cool too. Also when the bomb bays opened, I thought of the stories I’ve heard of the crew taking a piss and it coating/freezing on the turret 😂. One ball turret gunner improvised a tube that emptied past his ball in the airstream.
Now we know how inside of a GOLF BALL feels like!
I was expecting something like a turn stile for a Locomotive, this is a Rotisserie for Planes!
15:06 Read the message re next May and went Yay! Looked down to see the date posted and went Nay!
wow!! That is so cool to see, thanks Taigh!
That’s some powerful motor to rotate the whole plane around the ball like that! It must really annoy the navigator
What system operates that turret? Air pressure hoses?
"Its is nlt an opertrating Turret ball but its an Tie fighter"💀
There have been some first hand written reports from ball turret gunners that said that some of the views they had of the ground, the sea & other aircraft in their bomber group were truly awesome & its clear to see why in this video, BUT, it's also clear to see why a hell of a lot of ball turret gunners had said that their trousers weren't exactly empty after a mission 😆 It's also important to note (and I think this video goes someway to show why) most of the mental breakdowns suffered by bomber aircrews was the ball turret gunners.
With a📲CAMERA, 360💫 views seen everything more beautiful 🤩because we see the same thing that can be seen from that Height and that incredible😱 panorama that our soldiers🪖 saw in the Wars🪖💥✈️.
huge shoutout to the guy in the ball turret
That was pretty neat. Thanks.
That is quite an ingenious device for the period of construction....
Is it the ball turret that is rotating, or the plane? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
open the pod bay doors, hal
insideview would be awsome
It looks like the shuttle vehicles in 2001 A Space Odyssey
Good video. Thanks for that.
Respectfully I have watched dust settle that was more exciting.
great work so different scene.thanks
Respect to the many men who lost there lives in B17sand B24s Who where Belly Gunners not good if the ball turret failed. Respect to All crew's Who flew these dangerous missions deep in enemy territory for freedom 🙏R.I.P to those who never came Back 🤝 fighting for freedom
Rip this plane crashed in 2019.... :( I would do bomber camp if they still have it on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Boeing_B-17_Flying_Fortress_crash#/media/File:B17_wreckage_at_BDL_(cropped).jpg
did not see any drones to shoot at. if they add drones they can turn it into a tivoli for rich boys.
The Germans had some impressive weapons in WW2, but when it came to aircraft the Americans reigned supreme. 50 cals., Norden bombsights, ball turrets, and very dependable. B-24 Liberators are still one of my favorite planes.
Have you seen "A Shadow in the Clouds"? Can you open them up mid-flight?
Mad respect for anyone who sat in one of those, not only were they the first thing on the plane to be shot at, any damage to it pretty much guaranteed it would become a coffin.
