Do you believe using an MM04 (or any other onboard boost for that matter) together with more modern, high output pickups would be "overkill?" I am looking for alternatives to the EMG passives or J50 - let's say ESP Japan doesn't want to deal with any of that. I'm interested in having the best of both worlds by having an organic sounding passive + the boost switch when needed.

MM-04 is definitely the more balanced of the three, but I think the JE-1000 sounds better for rhythm while the leads sounds better with the MM-04. The ABQ has more highs and sounds shrill to me.

I have this guitar, and I love it! My girlfriend got it for me in early 2013 for 400 Euro with a molded ESP Case (no fret guard) from a distributor that was getting rid of old stock. The nut width on these are 42mm, as was on the Alexi-600 I used to own. I remember liking the EMG H2 in it, but because of the low output, I rarely used it for gigs, so it was my main writing guitar for a number of years, and as such, it has kept it's original color. As far as I know, the Alexi pickup is pretty much the same, but with the included boost circuit, so if you have one of these, just put an mm04 in it (wich I'm fairly certain is what Roope did) and you're set. =)

I have one and it's perfect it's fine and nothing has worn or broken or anything yet

thanks a lot, i use abq, i have 3 of them , no problem at all, only one got broken pot after one year, i changed with a normal pot by soldering the pins and thats it. i prefer abq instead of mm4, couse is smaller all in one and fast to mount , no need to be soldered, and also i dont use to boost gain so i like to have only one pot , thats it, thanks for your videos !

In regards to a potential setup with that pedal what amp and pickup combo would you recommend to go with that pickup since getting a gp-1000 and a je-1000 is pretty unrealistic for most people to get their hands on?

Yeah you should run an overdrive or distortion (big muff or if you’re looking for something cheaper the Behringer Super Fuzz SF300 it’s a copy of the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz (which were discontinued in the early/ mid 90s) so the closest you can get would be the Behringer, but it’s supposed to be a direct copy of the Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz.

The pickups on the EGEN8 sound really nice, but you’re correct, the bridge is garbage. Herman himself said as much recently.

Hellofriend, a curiosity I have about this guitar, especially with Alexi's latest ones (Hexed) is about its clean tone, I have not seen reviews about that and I would like to know how this tone works in this single pickup model

Great review. Lets be honest and look at what you get for the price...A great case, the epilite .A floyd rose 1000. 2 burstbucker pickups. 2 split coil pots, and 24 fret neck. Total up the costs separately and this is all one pckage.

I own several japanese ESPs as well as an Ltd EC1000 and have owned a lot of other Ltds in the past, some good some bad. To me MIJ is always worth it at least playability and feel wise. I just got an Edwards Scythe and to me it's a great alternative. You get the feel, quality of fretwork etc of an EII or SS ESP with 95% of the QC for the price of the Ltd version. Absolute bargain. I'm gonna extensively mod mine next week putting an OFR instead of the FR1000 and I'm gonna sell the ESP MM-04 preamp as well as the EMG pickup to fit a killswitch and an EMG 57 instead to fit my needs better but that's it, otherwise it's great and I would always pick this instead of an Ltd Hexed for example even though they still are very good guitars.

You wouldn't happen to have the dimensions for each of the bodies would you, would like to know the difference between the short and long horn.
