Hi there,
Welcome to the "One Handed Maker" channel.
I'm located on the East Coast of NSW and I love designing and making projects out of timber.
My workshop is an amazing place where I try and create unique pieces of functional art.
Just like my channel name I only have one arm/hand. Having one arm makes my CZcams videos a little more interesting as I challenge myself by creating complex and intricate pieces.
In my current workshop I make bespoke furniture, boxes, jewellery, and musical instruments from Australian and exotic imported timbers.
If you would like to get a quote on occasional furniture email me on:

Cajon Drum Build
The dimension of the Cajon:
Height: 400mm
Width: 350mm
Depth: 310mm
The top is Australian Rosewood
The sides are African Mahogany
The base is Tasmanian Blackwood
The back and front or Tappa are made from plywood.
Why did I make a Cajon?
From an early age I played guitar and drums then went on to play other instruments including the banjo, mandolin and bass guitar. After losing or paralysing my arm I taught myself how to play the piano. Well really, I adapted my guitar playing to the piano, or taught myself how to play the guitar on the piano.
At the end of the video I play the Cajon as well as the Guitar and Bass Guitar, all of which I made over the last 40 years.
The Bass and the Electric Guitar are also part of the backdrop in this video.
The music recording and editing took 8 days to complete with dozens of attempts at playing each instrument.
I made the electric guitar I play in the video in 1984 when I had two arms and I played this guitar on stage in bands, including a few performances at the Tamworth Country Music festival. The Guitar is made out of Australian Red Cedar and Coachwood and includes a Gibson Les Paul pickup in the treble position, a Badass bridge and Grover machine heads. The other pickup is an Aria P90.
To hold the guitar strings down to make the chords, I used a piece of ply with self adhesive felt pads placed where my fingers would have been on the fretboard. Then I clamped it down with a small clamp.
I made the bass guitar in 2006 out of Australian Red Cedar and Coachwood. .
The Cahon or Cajon is a timber musical instrument and according to the internet it can be spelt Cahon, Cajón or Cajon. I call the one I make in this video a Cahon Drum because it has a drum skin mounted in the front panel, or the "tappa" which is what the front is called.
I hope you enjoy the video and it would really help if you subscribed to my channel to help me make more content.

This Entertainment Unit is my 10th video and is made from New Guinea Rosewood for the cabinet and very old Australian Red Cedar for the tambour slats. This Chessboard is made from 180 pieces of timber! Finally I made a Chessboard for my grandfather's chess set which was passed down to me from my dad who was an avid chess player and a furniture maker with a workshop and showroom on the M1 highway in Frederickton NSW. I made several chess tables when I was 9 years old to sell for pocket money and there is a picture of the nicest one at the end ...

I made a Hall Table with a hidden drawer as my first attempt at secret compartment furniture. Imagine what treasures you could hide away in this secret drawer and the surprise on friends faces when it springs open at the press of a concealed button. I spent hours lying awake at night designing the secret latch mechanism which was the hardest part, but it worked out and the spring loaded conceal...

Dude! I'm sold! Your pins and tape trick is golden!

This was an excellent build and video. I have no musical ability but admire those that do.
Good to hear you enjoyed the build and short jam at the end. Thanks James
Hey James, or should I call you JAMS by dropping that E flat off of your name. Beautiful as always! However this time, it doesn't only look beautiful, it also sounds Beautiful!
Hey Mike, Good to hear from you and love the comment my friend. May your chisel always be sharp! Jams
@@onehandedmaker Love it!
Hi James. That was an outstanding video and the music at the end where you play 4 instruments was a jaw dropping surprise. I have to say, your videos are getting better with every upload and I can't wait to see what you make next. Love the rebate chat at 5:44. I have the same issue when it comes to design. I will share your video around. Alan
Thanks Alan, I really appreciate your comment and view. Stay happy, James
Nice job James!
Thanks Jim. I would like to say I'm unbeaten on the board, but my son gets me 2 out 3 games. Still such a wonderful feeling to play on it.

Beautiful build! Making a cajon is on my list and you nailed it with the contrasting woods. Sounded great in the jam session!
I recommend a Cajon Shade Tree. Thanks for checking out my channel. Stay dusty. James
Absolutely love the finger joint sled, that is pure genius, Amazing end result too, great effort!
Many thanks for the view and comment. That is my third attempt at this type of sled and now realise simple is good. Have a wonderful evening. James

Hi Mirit, Glad you liked my video and appreciate the musician comment. Regards James
love the handyman capo on your electric!
Hi Adrian, I have been waiting for a comment on the chord contraption. Felt pads stuck on the strings/frets where finders would normally hold the chords. Then, as you can see an F clamp to apply the pressure. Thanks for watching and commenting. James
first time ever seeing one of your videos, looks amazing!
Welcome to my humble little channel, Mr Yea. Regards James
Cool - beautifully made
Hi John. It's probably the coolest project to date. I normally make furniture, but have to confess it makes a great side table. Thanks again James
Hey mate, you are a true inspiration to the rest of us makers. I see you’re in Sydney, not sure if you’re aware of the Aussie Maker Meetup which happens every year. We’re up to our fourth and it’s going to be held in western Sydney in November. Would love to see you there, look out for an announcement from me soon. Love your work.
Hey back. It's great to hear from you and get a comment. It would be good to meet other makers. I'm in Port Macquarie but visit Sydney a lot, so I will look out for the date. Regards James

@@onehandedmaker Just getting over a minor back incident, a week in bed, so your video was so welcome, both for entertainment and motivational value. Back up and at it today :)
Good on you James..it looks and sounds the bomb!
Hi Tony. I'm glad you liked how the Cajon sounds. FYI, compression effect on the Cajon audio really beefed it up. See you soon. James
Amazing work, Sir! Thank you very much for sharing! God bless you!
Many thanks. I am about to check your channel, looks interesting. Stay well James
@@onehandedmaker thank you very much! I appreciate you.
Hi James ,,,, lovely percussion instrument,,,,, Wow ! this video had just about everything ! the finger joint sled was brilliant ! , you could do a DIY video on that alone ! by the way how thick is your table saw blade ? looks like 4mm ...... mine's a mere 2mm ..... another idea you've shown is the ''cutting a round hole '' using the circular jig & trim router trick 👍 ..... Yup alternating the red & honey coloured timbers works a treat !.......Ohh , the scenery at Millers Point Sydney looks stunning by the way !
Hey Wally. So good to hear from you. The Cahon is now a side table that we tap in beat to music on the TV now and then. I should make a few videos on the jigs and a workshop tour as well. Stay well my friend. James
Awesome work James, these are coming up great.
Thanks Grant. Good to hear from you and appreciate the compliment. Talk soon. James
Beautiful , really beautiful , thanks for sharing .
I put a lot of myself into this chessboard and still appreciate all the amazing comments it receives. Thankyou for watching my video. Have a wonderful day. James
Love this build. Some great tips and great design elements. Thank you
Thanks Paul. Good to hear you enjoyed the video and got something out of it. Do you build boards?
@onehandedmaker I'm fairly new to woodworking, but have so far made some nice cutting boards, hallway and coffee tables, and various basic stuff. I'm a chess enthusiast and I'm aiming to build a chessboard soon. I think the wood selection is important, so need to find a good source of maybe maple and walnut (or whatever I can easily get here in the UK).
@paulwaite6777 Can't go wrong with Walnut and Maple for a chessboard. Do you post pictures of your builds on social? Would love to see what you make. James
@onehandedmaker I am in the process of taking pics of my work and intend to get them on a website eventually. A work in progress I guess haha. Until then I have pics of most of my work on Pinterest - page is called MyBottleOpener. I got good at making magnetic bottle openers during covid, and my idea is to have a site dedicated for them, and a site for furniture etc. It's all a pipedream at the moment. It's great getting inspiration from you CZcams woodworkers, it's what got me into woodworking in the first place during covid. Now it's a real passion!
Why didn't i find your channel earlier? Awesome!
Thanks Deeep. I don't think I post videos often enough for the CZcams algorithm to promote my channel. That said, I am very happy doing woodwork and CZcams at my own pace. Stay well. Regards James FYI Cahon video will be out next week!
You are a genius....!!😊😊😊😊😊
Very kind words thankyou. Appreciate the smiley's as well. Stay happy. Regards James
Killer looking board. How did you do the initials?
Hi and thanks for the comment. If you mean inlays? Check out the middle of the video, it's all there I think. Regards James
@@onehandedmaker The picture for the video shows three initials (RGS?) inlayed (?) into the board.
@@bg76843 Ohh, I am really intrigued! Do you mean the thumbnail you see before you play the video? I can't recall adding any initials and RGS doesn't mean anything to me. Stay with me and we will get to the bottom of the mystery inlay. James
@@onehandedmaker my apologies. The initials were part of a different chess board video. czcams.com/video/QSvToSL1Aao/video.html
