BMW R100 Rebuild: 250 Mile Break-In Update
Following the engine rebuild on my 1981 BMW R100CS, I've now completed the first tune-up service at 250 miles. The bike started running pretty badly after around 200 miles, but we're back on track after a few adjustments.

Hey man I have been binging on your 650 series ❤ too good , simple and so informative yet very much enjoyable to watch while having food 😂❤... i stopped at new chain and sprocket.... when you gonna upload installing video... those long azz installing sessions are pure joy to watch and very rare to find ... cheers , happy riding mawa.
My wife and I are about to do a weekend trip on our Scout. About a 7hr ride, I loved your video. Everyone I've asked has just said to not even attempt a 2 up trip on the Scout. Nice to see it can be done. We just picked up a 25 Scout with the limited plus tech package. I can't wait to get it on the open road.
Well done!!
Is your damping adjustment screw loose and undefined? seem to just spin in the hole with no difference..
Is you damping adjustment screw loose and undefined, seem to just endlessy spin inside its adjuster
I have 550 miles on my int 650 and it just started cutting out even at idle after a few minutes. Hopefully this is the problem. Thanks
Next year I am swapping my interceptor for the super meteor, this bike isn’t for touring at all.
Get a decent exhaust then you could have conventional luggage
I’m happy with both the exhaust and the luggage on this bike. The exhausts are upswept by design, so huge panniers won’t work. It’s not that type of bike though.
Please tell us all the total cost of all the mods…..
Always make sure the barrel can turn freely when its put into the slot of the throttle because if it binds and bends the cable with every turn of the throttle it will cause the cable to fray and eventually break, learned this the hard way!😂🍻
Yes you got to make sure it can move. I use grease on the barrels for that reason.
Roughly, how much have you spent on those mods ?
Nice bike man. As they say ride fast die fast. Cheers from Canada
My older brother had multiple BMW's ,a 750 bar 5 boxer,and a bar 6 .l8r on my friends had two 1000cc ks
Honestly think Kriega are the best on the market full stop . Been using it for years and it’s never let me down . Worth every penny
I would agree with that. All my Kreiga stuff has lasted years and years.
None of these for me!
I hate the footpegs
I'm not a huge fan either. I seem to catch my shins on them all the time. There are kits to move them.
Like the look of these, but was quite surprised to see the angle is locked in. I thought the clamp would be a friction fit type of thing allowing the end use to tweak the angle to their liking. Seems a bit arbitrary. I wonder if 3D printing a stand off washer for the bracket '+' mount would upset the geometry enough to cause stress points..?
I got a leather bag with my Vespa and they looked good for 10 minutes....if it is not going to rain. I think they are pretty useless.
I’ve had these on the bike for a year and they still look brand new. Every now and then a give the leather a once over with a conditioner and it does the job.
@@WildlifeMoto do you go out in the rain?
@@allanb52 yep. I live in the uk. If I never went out in the rain, I’d never ride.
The top triple clamp, along with progressive anti dive springs will make it handle 100% better than stock
Cheers. That’s what I ended up doing and along with new shocks it’s made a big improvement. Have a look at the last couple of videos on my channel if you want to see how it turned out.
It’s way too quiet!!!!
It’s very quiet for the type of bike. Easy fix though
I've got an issue with my fuel taps. Quick question, on your rebuild, you show the two reeds. Do they both fit into a gauze filter in the tank? If I look into my tank, all I can see is a metal gauze. Think the reeds have been fitted the wrong way around on my bike, don't seem to have a reserve :)
Hi. Yes you should have two reeds on each tap and the gauze fits over the top of both of them. You can pick up replacements on Motoworks if needed.
@@WildlifeMoto Thanks, don't think they are broken, someone has fitted the reeds the wrong way around. So I have no reserve, but if tank is full, the reserve position works fine :) Are you going to the airhead meeting at Sammy Millers the end of July?
@@RobertSmith-ug4it If the reeds are the wrong way around, wouldn’t your “On” position become your reserve? If you have a fuel line cross over, you can have a make shift “reserve” by running one fuel tap on and the other off. When the open side of the tank runs dry you’ll still have a bit of fuel in the lobe on the closed side. Just turn on the opposite tap and get to a petrol station ASAP. Thanks for the heads up on the Airhead meet. I might head over if a get time. Cheers.
@@WildlifeMoto Or maybe there are not reeds or they have been cut to the same size, ie short. I'll have a look in the winter, I know to look for fuel around the 180 mile point. Last year at the Sammy Millers airhead meet there were around 75 airheads.
Wonderful job!
Where did you get the side panel with the vents in?
Got them from a French company called BAAK. Not sure if they are still selling them.
Amazing!
Very nice. Cerakote looks excellent and well done with the clocks. Who supplied the DIN wiring, please? I shall need some for my R100RS and might as well have the correct stuff.
Thanks. I get my wires from Planet 12v.
Is this the bike that was smoke grey with silver wheels? I prefer the original look.
Yes, the previous owner had it sprayed in homage to the R90s. The R90s, in black and silver, was called the TT and it does look fantastic (on an actual R90S). However, the spray job on my bike was not original / factory paint and not correct for the R100CS. I decided to put it back in black paint (as per its original documentation) and the wheels are just my personal preference.
@@WildlifeMoto thanks for the reply. Good points about originality. For sure it’s a handsome bike in black. I’m new to your channel and subscribed 👍🏻
Dainese riding gear for a Royal Enfield...respect.
She's a beauty, great job on the rebuild, I have a 1994 R1100RS that I've taken on two 1500 mile trips now without missing a beat, and I average 50 mpg with more than enough power for any situation. Your two lane country roads keep me on edge knowing how little attention people pay to oncoming traffic, especially motorcycles. Wishing you many safe rides.
Thanks Scott. First trip happening over this weekend. Keeping everything crossed that she’ll keep running. 🤞
I love that view while riding, as I've said before takes me back to the 80's. Same sounds etc. Sounds like you're on a real learning curve with regards to maintenance, I hope you end up with a reliable two up tourer as both my R100S and R100RS were and I look forward to seeing some more.
Thanks Walt. Glad it’s bringing back some happy memories for you. This weekend will be the first two up trip. Keeping everything crossed that it goes well. 🤞
Suede touring seat slays...
Not sure whether you understand German? If so, look at the channel of "Onkel M". He has a video in which he gives a comprehensive explanation of why not to use a clamp to adjust the free play on the rocker arm. He recommends shims as the proper way to achieve the desired clearance without stressing anything.
WM, all of your effort and methodical hard work is really paying off. This is such a positive update: The bike looks absolutely beautiful and listening and watching how the she/he/it(?) now runs and rides must be so rewarding for you. A brilliant job and you should be rightly proud!
Thank you. It's great to have her up and running. This is a classic bike that you can really use.
That's fantastic to see the classic BMW flying in pristine condition WM! It's been a fantastic learning curve that you probably originally thought was nigh on impossible! So well done & congratulations! Enjoy summer.
Cheers, Steve, and thanks for your support/advice along the way. It's been a fun project and i'm pleased with the end result.
Not surprised by the tight valves. A few heat cycles, new gaskets and studs can do all that. Sounds like everything else is just bedding in issues. Fantastic how good these old “R” bikes are when looked after and have the Bings and ignition. Enjoy the summer!
Cheers Chris. Hopefully, she'll start to stabilise after a few more miles. Really happy with how things are running at the moment.
Probably one of the most enjoyable rebuilds I’ve watched. Your attention to detail is amazing and it appears only the best options were taken. Not really surprised though as it was the same with all the changes you made to the Interceptor. I think you now have a scene stealer where ever you go. Big congratulations on this.
Thank you sir! Glad you enjoyed the series. Ride safe :)
Congratulations great job
Cheers Tony. Hope you are doing well?
Outstanding WM! You're the perfect owner/rider/mechanic for that classic...beautiful scenery btw
Thank you Gary. Yes, this is one of my favourite local rides. It's especially good when the sun is shining.
That’s my favourite type of video, talking about your bike whilst riding. A well balanced air head is so sweet ! 🇬🇧
Cheers Stewy. Long live the POV motovlog!
Hi wildlife moto, well done on shorting out the problems you have had and you are now getting it shorted and the bike is running well and you are getting to grips with and hopefully you will be Abel to get to touring with you both
Thanks Paul. She's running much better now. It might take a few more miles to get her fully stable, but things are going well so far. Thanks for watching.
Awesome! I tried it today with copper flux and a random cable + a blowtorch and… after 4 tries… i gave up, the solder would never stick!… but after watching this, i see i have to do some more research
Glad the video helped. If you follow this method, you should have your cables done in no time.
May I ask what is the width of the L bracket mounting points? I have an older Ventura rack/bag and need to see if it’ll fit.
The best explanation I have seen on YT for this problem. Nice One!
Tomorrow I'm picking up my new Interceptor. I doubt I'll get much sleep tonight ❤
Congratulations! Enjoy.
Hi daddy , I got Powerage headers for my 650. I want mine to change color to that copperish brown … shall I take brushed steel or glossy steel headers ?
Go for non brushed as you can polish them easier. If you want yours to stay a nice straw colour, you’ll have to polish them back to shiny steel from time to time. It won’t take long for them to go dark brown or even blue.
Did you do an update video on how you got the bolt/stud out?
I mentioned it in a later video but not a whole video on it. The stud was cut either side of the engine to get it out of the frame. A slide hammer was used to pull it out of the engine and each stump had to be drilled out of the frame. It was properly seized in place.
Türkiye'den selamlar bu motor insanda bağımlılık yapıyor ve park ettikten sonra geri dönüp bakmaktan kendini alamıyorsun dostum.🧿🪶
Awesome mate. I took one for a ride the other day and enjoyed it so much! I now want one.
what a beaaaautiful Piece of machinery and hard hard work!!! congratulations!!! long live 2V boxers!!!!
Thank you. It certainly was a lot of work, but an enjoyable project. These are lovely bikes to work on.
