How to prepare Kalo (Taro) for Kui (poi pounding)
Aole pau ka ike i ka halau hookahi
This cleaning practice was developed over the last 26 years with help from my kupuna and research through various sources, including:
-The bishop museum,
-Queen Emma, and
-Mary Kawena Pukui.
All of these have impacted how we clean kalo / taro today.
This is our process in the simplest form.
Our personal goal is to make poi as a spiritual practice.
When we do it in this form, we honor our ancestor
Haloanakalaukapalili
We hope you guys enjoy it.
Let us know your comments and questions.

Plant the tree with a lifetime of abundance to start with and give your ulu tree the best chance to be a high producer. So blessed to be able to kanu ulu ma Kahana with Uncle Skippy Ioane serenading the Kupuna in the Valley. Rally in the Valley 2022 is a direct response to 11 years of organized political action known as “Ku’i at the Capitol “. Over those years the community clearly called upon the need for fertile land and uncontaminated water to grow food. Especially canoe starches; kalo, ulu and uala. Since no...

Watching this traditional way to make poi is fascinating. There’s beauty in the tools that are used, and in the sharing of the work to make it. Finally there’s the sharing of it among families. Some day I hope to watch this in person, and taste the poi when it’s ready.

Calling out Waianae no good that kine. We kanakas stand together from WAIANAE, HONOLULU,WAIMANALO,KANEOHE, etc the whole ISLAND OF OAHU AND THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND CHAIN and across the AMERICAS all across the WORLD.We all KANAKA. The trophies is just what we worked for and have pride even without our JUSTICE we got it with our own 2 hands…. Show your TROPHIES WE STILL KANAKA SHOW THEM NO MATTER WHAT WE STILL CAN AND WE WILL KEEP GOING THE WHITE MAN GOT NOTHING ON US. But kanaka please don’t degrade your own kine kanaka to kanaka we stand together as one. No kanaka is better then the other kanaka. Cause the COCO we share brings us together and that’s what we need is all to be one and fight together for our JUSTICE not fight AGAINST EACH OTHER. Aloha KANAKA YOU ARE STILL IN MY PRAYERS EVERY KANAKA I PRAY WE STOP FIGHTING AGAINST EACH OTHER AND FIGHT FOR EACH OTHER…. We are one OHANA. KANAKAS FOR EVER.

hi daniel terry from melbourne again and i might not be hawaiian ,even though my mum thought i am but i was listening to your ideas on hawaii and noticed about growing kalo instead of sharing ideas on growing koa trees for canoes and boards for mashing kalo to make poi and even things that will feed all and comunity affairs even bringing in ideas from outside things that used to be in quantity even things like the palm that grow on the desert side of hawaii especially ulu but it costs too much to buy from hawaii so we get it from queensland aust small things like that help a comuniuty and feed people we can even grow koa trees here but like i say you need comunity and that means the young ones as especialy the young ones , i think i have rambled on enough but just keep on doing a good job aloha to all.

i grow taro here in chicago, yes that's right all the way here chicago! grow it mostly for leaves to make a Gujarati dish called Patra (taro leaves, wrapped with a batter of gram flour, palm sugar, green chiles, and spices) and also for the stems which are used to make a fresh pickle to eat with lentils. @15:00 - @16:00 that's really interesting, i'll have to see how that works out in my garden next year.
