I feel like a lot of the discussions I’ve seen about whether she is fat or chubby or plus or plump or midsized or whatever miss the point but you nailed it. It’s so unbelievably silly and reductive to try to categorize a human being as “hot” or “not hot”, especially when it’s obviously going to be highly subjective and complex and based on so many factors other than body fat percentage.

I gotta say, something I really appreciate that early on Nicola said she didn't want her weight discussed. that not only is it a tool for bullying it undermines her hard work. And people have respected that, making her weight not really a part of the discussion. Judge her on her acting merit, and she is shining so brightly.

This is easily one of the cruelest articles I've ever read. And I think so due to several reasons. One, I have a weird sort of platonic attachment to Nicola Coughlan. She's... I don't know, cozy to watch? I adore her. So it made it ten times worse for me. And two, it was ANOTHER WOMAN who wrote it. How far off the moral spectrum do you have to be to think that is a proper thing to publish? It makes my blood boil. This kind of rethoric is one I would've ended up in a fist fight in highschool over. I would've literally gotten violent with her if I heard her say that to someone I even mildly appreciate.

Yikes. Back in the day when I went to university, I had a friend who was voluptuous. That really was the first impression I got. Yes, her body was a larger side than most of the girls I encountered. But she made an amazing first impression, with her huge eyes, gorgeous smile, infectious laugh, and every weekend guys were tripping over each other asking her out. She had her pick. The trouble with many people is that they value appearance above character, personality, the soul of a person. The number of people having body enhancing surgery is frightening and terribly sad. Be grateful for what you were given and look beyond image. There are many people who are large for many reasons. It could be medical, anxiety, etc. Folk drink, smoke, take drugs, self harm and over eat to get through the day. In Bridgerton Penelope's character is described as plump so Nic is just that but she is really stunning inside and out.

Why is this even a topic of conversation? This is disgusting. Someone has too much time on their hands, and should spend their time making the world a better place rather than criticizing others. Climate change, price gouging, or feeding the hungry would be better conversations than this topic.

Its clear that that writer has a big crush on colin and sees Nicola as an actual threat. She attacked her in the insecure ways bullies do, for no GD reason other than to pour out her own sexual frustration onto another woman. So yes, projection and straight up teenaged crush for the Colin guy.

Calling nicola fat is ridiculous, this shows you how tv can change people's perception. If you actually pay attention shes not fat, super skinny no but definitely not obese. They also want to convince us that Nicola isn't beautiful? She is. They always cast women who are actually pretty in real life to play these "overlooked" and "unattractive " women. When in reality they are anything but that.

It's wild to me that even in 2024 we still have people in the mindset that people who are fat cannot be physically attractive.

Nicola as Penelope is a delight and any fat shaming of her, or anyone else is obnoxious. But a few things I should point out. 1) The "dear reader" comments are a nod to Lady Whistledown's writing which is absolutely meant to be condescending at times. That's something you'd know if you watched the show instead of getting your impressions of it via TikTok. 2) Unfortunately the book also plays into the "fat" aspect by describing her has having her baby fat and not losing it till in her late 20's- at which point her romance begins. That doesn't have any bearing on the article-which is crap- but it just goes to show that they are doing their best to try to make her seem slightly unattractive. In universe, Penelope is also considered undesirable because her mom dresses her in unflattering clothes and nagged her so much it made her so self conscious that she's rather socially awkward- plus she has no dowry. Unfortunately the author of the article failed to see beyond the weight. The goal of season 1 and 2 was to make her seem a bit pathetic and unattractive. But frankly, even in her gaudiest hair and outfit she was too good for Colin.

I love the fact that Nicola is everywhere. I think she 's a great actress with lots of talent. She is a brilliant Penelope Featherington and a brilliant romantic lead.

I am a fat girl and I admit the first watch through it felt weird but I think that was more self hatred I've had because of people like who wrote the article. My second, third, 4th and 5th watch through lol.... She is hot.

Wow, what century are we in? The writer is a Jewish woman with a Masters in Gender Studies and was a fellow on business practices of feminist publishers? Blows my mind that anyone could write so many obscenely racist or fatphobic things in one article esp having degrees in the Humanities. Where'd she put her humanity along the way? Yikes. It's even more astonishing that any publisher actually published it. Nicola is very short (5'1") and I can tell you, as a short person also with big boobs, that gaining 10 lbs looks like 50 on a regular sized person. Her actual weight is FAR less than the writer's is. I look a bit pudgy and I'm 2" taller than Nicola and only 115lbs! Nicola just has a round face and big boobs which makes her look bigger than she is. The woman is not fat. She's gorgeous. Lastly, the fashions on the show with all the empire waists always make women with large boobs look bigger than they are. Even the thin wafers on the show look pregnant in them. Regardless, to insinuate that she's not hot is obscene. She's certainly far prettier than the writer is, inside and out, weighs less and is richer too. Nicola for the win!

Penelope doesn’t have to be universally beautiful, she just has to be beautiful to Colin. One of the criticisms of romance is how the hero and heroine are always described as beautiful, but that’s because they’re usually seen from the hero or heroines point of view. Of course, they are beautiful for the person they eventually get together with. Also, yes, Nicola is beautiful.

I don't even watch Bridgerton, and have never seen an episode of Derry Girls, and I know who Nicola Coughlan is. I recognize her on sight, which is unusual for an actress of her age who was never on Downton Abbey. I have seen her on talk shows, and she seems both intelligent and articulate. She is also just about as pretty as can be. And she is not fat. She's a little plump by today's anorectic standard, sure, but not abnormally so. The phrase "plump and blonde and pretty" could have been coined for her. Why would this writer of whom I have never heard not point out her perfect skin and her lovely, delicate coloring instead of repeatedly projecting fat phobia onto her perfectly normal sized body?

I loved the Penelope character in books, and I love Nicola's portrayal of her. I never for one second thought that she wasn't Penelope. If anything, I was disappointed by Colin's casting.
