Ok I've played Skyrim many times unlike you it seems she actually had no ties to the dark brotherhood there's a letter next to her effigy which complains about the fact the Dark Brotherhood never contacted her so all her boasting knowing them is just an empty threat

Love Ilia. She's the first follower I ever had that killed a dragon by herself for me. I find her prettier than Serana. Much less annoying than Serana too. The most underrated, in my opinion, is also the earliest follower you can get. Faendal. Give him good armor and weapons and he does a fine job tanking for you. He's a scrawny elf so he gets overlooked.

I do the thieves guild honey quest successfully, collect the reward - then AFTERWARDS go back and burn all the hives! I also have a habit of using the Ice Form shout on Maven if I meet her.

I'm so split on the Soul Carin. As a piece of gameplay its terrible, boring, very little to do, tedious, and its super easy to get disoriented. But its meaningless, depressing, and disorienting nature is perfect from a lore standpoint. You really get the feeling of how horrible it would be to be stuck there forever and I think thats exactly what they were going for. They could have added a bunch of dungeons, cool side quests, and things to do, but that would defeat its purpose. This isn't some fun place you wanna hang out in. It's emptiness is in itself the classic environmental story telling BGS games are known for. It's a soulless empty hell, and for that I can appreciate it!

I found a mod that let me put a new face on Riften's throne. It's called "A Better Tomorrow" it lets you oust maven for her crimes and put a new modded character on the throne. This means you can take console commands remove maven's essential status and take her and her fam down. But this is a great vanilla way to do this.

What most new players tend to overlook in Ilia (aside from her quest's difficulty) is her preference in Ice Destruction Magic. In vanilla Skyrim, Ice magic is considered one of - if not THE - most overpowered magic element because of its dual damage type, which are HP & Stamina. Most enemies in vanilla Skyrim rely mainly on HP & Stamina for almost every action, especially attacking and moving. Ice magic strips thay way by making enemies have a much slower movement. This becomes even more evident when you start installing perk and magic overhaul mods. Sure, you can just go to Riften proper and spend 500 gold to recruit Marcurio (who is also an equally powerful mage Follower). However, due to his preference for Lightning/Electro magic element, Marcurio is more suited for players/characters who spec into the Ranged Anti-Magic archetype, since Lightning/Electro magic drains both HP & Mana, which are mostly mages, who are also few in numbers compared to the majority of Skyrim's enemies. Ilia offers more versatility with her Ice Magic because she can support both a Ranged and Melee character playstyles.

Maven tries to have you killed if you don’t say the right things to Maul. That’s plenty reason enough to hurt her and destroy the Brotherhood

I like that Crag-jumper lady. She's an archer and she acts like one. Always staying far behind, shoot arrows, no charging the enemies and she doesn't stand in my way.

There are several ways to do the Letrush horse theft. I usually go to Maven and tell her because it undermine her relationship with her son (in my mind). I kill the Black Briar mercenaries and still take the horse. I always felt that Layla Lawgiver was also supposed to be Jarl with either side of the civil war because she has some unique dialogue that only unlocks after you become thane and she says Ulfric is using the Talos worship excuse for his own ambition. There is also a book sitting beside her throne that says Riften used to be much bigger but, the citizens burned it down because the city had become so corrupt. I think you were supposed to be able to rat out Maven.

Unfortunately, it seems that Maven can't be exiled.

My biggest complaint with skyrim is the lack of content for someone who wants to be the genuine good guy. Destroying the dark brotherhood is good, but only becomes an option by murder, whether direct or not. Maven never gets thrown in jail. Thieves guild never apprehended.

We do know one thing for certain: from some reason she put a hit out on us, pre-game. That's how we get captured trying to flee to Hammerfell.

This is only for coping purposes and nothing more. the best way would have been to end the Thieves' guild like you can the Dark Brotherhood, oh wait, you can't do that. Though your methods does make a very fun early game role play.

If an orphan can hire assassins to take down a mean old babysitter, then whats stopping anyone else from commissioning those same asses to go after maven?

Can you kill any of her children? I believe her daughter works in the alchemy store but she’s actually the only decent one in the family. You could also take EVERY item from her estate/homes.

Sadly I murdered Erandur because I never had the staff of vermena, it’s not worth it at all

in my opinion, dragonborn is better in terms of content. and dawnguard is better for story but ONLY because of serana. she just made the story so much more interesting and unique even if you want to talk about outside of the elder scrolls games... there is no story like serana's story and your friendship with her. (as far as im aware - and a HUGE bonus points if you have serana add-on mod which makes her story so much better)

I would just install the high king mod and send her for execution

Here is another way to see it: Do you want: -The Suck boys, emo guys and Furry expansion or -The Hentei tentacle party combo experience with your bro "Party Guy Tentacle Lord" Do you want: -The Giga Chat Dawnguard Gang or -The "We are all peace and love" but actually will cut you in to pieces North gang? Do you want: -Nerd Expansion Bookworm taking to the next level experience or -The "I took the Red Water Scooma and it wasn't that bad really, just woke up feeling dizzy, and pain at the bottom part"

*Dragonborn,* easy. *Dawnguard* is fun, but *DB* just bring so much more in terms of new worldspace, dungeons, likable characters and expansion of the universe's lore. The fact that it's also huge *Morrowind* callback helps too.

Maven is the prime suspect for being the one who put the Dark Brotherhood contract out on the Dragonborn before the game even starts. The evidence is mostly circumstantial, but she stilll seems to be the most likely person for reasons not yet explained in the canon. But if you want a roleplaying motive for wanting to take Maven down, reading her letter to Astrid after having already dispatched a few assassins that tried to kill you should probably suffice.
