Jet Boats Reach The Stone Age - Black and White
In 1966 the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources was surveying Papua New Guinea , mapping the Eastern half of the island's geology. There was unexplored territory between the Central Range and swamps and plains of the Sepik River to the north-mountains extending some 350 kilometres to the Irian Jaya border.
They were drained by large, steep rivers, and there were few sign of gardens in the western half, which meant that much of the area was unpopulated. Despite the heavy jungle cover, the air photos showed traces of enormous faults hundreds of kilometres long, and great belts covered by stunted vegetation that were probably mantle rocks. Here was the chance of a lifetime, to explore the only large part of Papua New Guinea almost totally unexplored. It would be the culmination of the mapping of Papua New Guinea, but the task would be immense (and expensive), and would need a much greater commitment by BMR than had been made up to then.
Jet boats, invented by NZ engineer W. Hamilton seemed to be the only practical way to navigate the immense distances of the Sepik River and also be capable of penetrating the tributaries that flowed down precipitous valleys from the Central Range. Instead of a conventional (and vulnerable) propeller, the propulsion unit is mounted inboard and driven by a slightly modified car engine: it draws water through a grate in the bottom and shoots it out of the stern as a powerful jet above the waterline. The boat is steered by deflectors that divert the jet to either side, and stopped by lowering a clamshell that reverses the jet under the stern. Jet boats cope admirably with fast-flowing rivers, and can operate in a few inches of water so they seemed ideal for the condition.
Guy Mannering accompanied the expedition and this is his unique record of a moment in history. Originally in vibrant 16mm colour, the film has suffered from inadequate fixing during the development process and has 'mellowed' to a dull browny tint.
This version has been converted to a monochrome version to get away from the reddish hue of the original surviving copy.

Capturing the Avalon Airshow volunteers as they go about their business and play at the 2017 event. Filmed with a basic video camera, the sound is not the best quality but the experiences are real. The 6 minute sequence of taking one of the aerobatic planes through the crowds highlights the professionalism and skill of the volunteers. Originally a one hour video this has been re-edited down to ...

Wonderful stuff.
Wow beautiful and superb music !
This video is just like i feel about christmas & new year, It sucks
I'm sorry but I'm a humbug. I'm a man in his 40s, and to me Christmas Day is just a normal day. A complete waste of time and money to buy cards, presents etc. I'm afraid it's for children, not for adults, I'm sorry but it's true.
Tis The Season to be jolly....
Love this! I can so relate!
I love Christmas, although I agree with the tipping and the non-stop Christmas songs in the stores and shops 😂😁
I used to see my window cleaner once a year two weeks before Christmas and that's the truth!
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
2019 bought my wife a chainsaw, my mates were astounded, but it has been the most used Xmas present since
Geoffrey Palmer love him. Legend!
I am a proper grinch at Christmas I hate it Love this specially when Ozzy says “ it’s bollox “ Love him 🥰
Geoffrey Palmer is the perfect narrator for this series. He already sounds gloomy reading his script. Jack Dee is another gloomy soul, but he would add a different gloominess
Greetings from QLD Australia cobbas never get sick of this beloved song about dear aunty Jack cheers Stephen 🤠✌️🐨🦘🐴
350 knots... about 402+ mph.
T'was all in grumpy fun!
see all the decoations they have
Why was Terry Christian ever given a job on TV?
43:08 yes. Yes it is.
I can’t believe how much Andi Oliver has totally changed!
Thank you so much for this
💖💖💖💃💃💃👏👏👏
This was my first airshow in a long list of many airshows' i've seen, and as I recall it was a rainy weekend and very muddy. It was the first time time I saw a jet fighter with a very fast fly by of a RAAF Mirage, it sent shivers down my spine.
One of the best, for sure!
Thanks for sharing this. 4 of us rented a brand new Calais and drove across from Adelaide on the Friday night. Saturday was spent shopping and seeing the sights to keep the girls happy, but Sunday we enjoyed the show. The stand out memories for me were the Antonov, 727 and A340 Ariel displays. Especially the low, slow high AOT of the Airbus. Nobody believes the photos I have as I zoomed in and don’t have any reference…
Thanks John and team for another great video. ❤
Great wirk as usual John. Thanks
I love Penny Smith. Straight talking, pretty, balls out, tells it how it is. Brilliant!
How wonderful that the graffiti was still there. Would love to see this place in-person myself.
Oh my! That's gorgeous flying right there.
Lovely video. Really enjoyed this, thanks John.
as a contractor, I used to look forward to christmas cos it was double time and I could dodge all the bullshit including my new year birthday
Like a fuckin bird. This is the most beautiful display of air dancery I've ever witnessed. Rob Holland take notes please
I was never allowed to watch it.
Damn you a time traveler
My turn @ age 60, 2024, 15000 kms
HELL YES!!! Now THATS true aviation right there!
Many Thanks for Sharing this Rare Video from Addis!Everything has Changed over the course of years.
Beautiful..!!!
Rory Odonoghue. (Thin Arthur) One brilliant and unique musician. He had a band called "the cool bananas". My husband saw them play once in Newcastle. He said they were very professional, and very original. And Rory was amazing. A lost talent. So sorry he's no longer with us.
OMFG!@@!! The first was great and the following "ass over tea kettle" moves were phenomanel!!! Out of this world.
The fighter jet of the airline world!
I hate christmas it is the only time of the year I drink to kill the pain and embassesment. The should have cruses which stay at sea over chistmas where it is forbidden to mention the word.
Hear hear
I use to go to that spot where that was filmed with my dad . Its in Wollongong. Port kembla. My most favourite show
Time for another rendition of ‘Wollongong The Brave’ czcams.com/video/22NIsf9Y-80/video.html
A crash brought me here. Nice display there pilot
Love Christmas but the commercials drive me nuts because of the bells
This was the day she bowed to the king of kings
