Growing bonsai in Korea, and growing as a person through bonsai.
I am not a bonsai master. This is not a channel about how to do bonsai, it is about my own growth, learning process, and bonsai life. If you want to learn how to do bonsai, ask somebody who knows what they're talking about, not a hobbyist on youtube.

Searching for the beautiful line in bonsai
I had some ideas about the nature of the beautiful line in bonsai, the limitations that come with wire, and how to overcome them. Also I work on the Japanese maple I collected last year in the video "My landlord killed my bonsai" - czcams.com/video/WdBuFgyz8LY/video.html

A bonsai for Leonard Cohen
zhlédnutí 696Před 3 měsíci
A little movie about role models, growing, and what it menas to be an artist. I talk about Leonard Cohen and Buddhism, and style a literati Callitris rhomboidea (common names: Oyster Bay pine, Tasmanian cypress pine, Port Jackson pine, Illawarra mountain pine), which is an interesting Australian native conifer with a lot of potential for bonsai. This is the last of the three trees I filmed exte...
There are no mistakes in bonsai except one

While working on this crape myrtle bonsai (Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Tuscarora') in Australian summer, I had a setback due to insufficient attention to what I was doing. It made me think about the nature of randomness, the fractal forms of trees, and how in our accidents, we more accurately mimic the randomness of nature than we do when we try to create randomness intentionally. 3 years ago I planted this tree on a rock. What happened?

It was time to do some more work on the tea tree (Leptospermum sp.) I planted on a rock in 2021, while I was back in Australia. It's been an interesting journey for the tree, and me. This tree was previously featured in the video "Making rock planted bonsai and looking for rocks" - czcams.com/video/3j3Uw4EmDkg/video.html

Why you should have a ginkgo bonsai
zhlédnutí 3,4KPřed 8 měsíci
Ginkgo biloba is a fascinating plant. I got interested in the ancient ginkgos of my Korean hometown and set out to capture them in perfect Fall colors. I also talk about the evolution of the ginkgo, how it nearly went extinct, and how it came to be spread around the world. I also found some tiny ginkgo seedlings to add to my bonsai collection. Distribution of male and female ginkgos: www.osgf.o...
Exposed root pines on the Korean coast

I took a daytrip at the end of Summer to visit Holtong Beach (홀통해수욕장) in Jeollanam-do, South Korea, with my Korean friend. I found some interesting exposed root Japanese/Korean black pines. It reminded me that I had one of my own that needed some work. I also talk about Korea's reforestation program under President Park Chung-hee. The problem with bonsai videos
zhlédnutí 17KPřed rokem
I do some work on a persimmon tree and think about the nature of bonsai videos - how they depend on the satisfaction of transformation, creating a false sense of what bonsai is really about - and think about how to address this problem. Also some cool time-lapses of some of the recent rainy weather here in Korea. Music: Sergey Cheremisinov - The promises, Grey drops
Wild strawberry kusamono, revisited

Another year has passed, and it's time to take another look at the wild strawberry kusamono I made with plants from my local stream in Korea. There have been changes to my stream, too. Youtube haters were right: I suck at bonsai

My efforts to learn how to use copper bonsai wire led me to purchase two cheap kishu shimpaku junipers (Juniperus chinensis "Kishu") from a Korean online shop. When they came, I got a surprise. Filled with confidence, I decided to make the greatest Short in the history of CZcams, however the results were less successful than I had hoped. Sorry not sorry. Music: Lobo Loco - Relaxed Weekend
What does bonsai mean to you? (2023 channel trailer)

Why "growing with bonsai"? What is this channel about? What kind of egotism lets me believe that people should listen to what I have to say about bonsai? This is what bonsai means to me, and what I hope to share in these videos. What does bonsai mean to you?

Back in Korea after my vacation in Australia, I discover that my bonsai have not been well cared for in my absence. Hi sir ,need ur advice plz help me for my japanese maple sapling
Beautiful grass
I can definitely really relate to your thoughts in this. Excellent editing thanks!
I think you move the Jin too far up -you need slowly & gradually moved it up overtime to help prevent killing the tree..
Bonsai asmr is the lowkey pleasant asf
Great video!!! Thanks:)
Hey, your tree looks very nice. I hope that both of you spent a good and vigorous growing season 😊 And thanks for putting poetry into bonsai, which is always more (too) technical than artistic.
Please come check out my (relatively) new channel "Woodcrest Bonsai". I go over all aspects of growing bonsai including even taking cuttings for trees that may take years to come to fruition.
❤🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
I personally prefer clip and grow as it gives a more natural looking tree but I will make use of wire as it gets results fast that allow me to build from.
I find I use it less and less as I go on. But I like the creative possibilities it opens up.
But did it survive
Great video superb editing. There is only one mistake with our trees and that is to kill it that is the best way to put our bonsai journey. My first tree was a crape myrtle, I kill it but I learn so much from that mistake. Keep up the great work.😄
That was absolutely wonderful. It's always a joy to see that you've uploaded a new video and I'm never disappointed. Thank you.
And thank you for your support since I started this channel :)
Lovely video but that use of the paintbrush made me wince every time. It should only be bent a very small amount, like this. www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/4/47/Use-a-Chinese-Calligraphy-Brush-Step-9.jpg/v4-460px-Use-a-Chinese-Calligraphy-Brush-Step-9.jpg.webp
It was my first time and mostly for video aesthetics. But it was fun, so I might try it again sometime. Thanks for the tip.
Beautiful video and very pertinent questions.... I'm still in the "random bending" phase, but I enjoy it. Food for thought, surely going to watch again
👍👌
If you, instead of breaking the brand as with lst you can just everyday bend the branches just to the point where they start to break but don't brake. I find that after a season of this, the branches stay more or less where you want them without the bulging scars.
Interesting idea, will have to try it sometime
@growingwithbonsai ya several years now.
Your words and films bring out those thoughts I have that are deep down and I couldn’t express, I’m not happy with my wiring, and I wasn’t sure why, it never “feels” right
I don’t think there are many channels that express art with bonsai as well as you do. Thank you
Foist!
Hello good afternoon. I'm Gustavo, from Portugal. I really enjoy watching your CZcams channel. The reflections you make about bonsai help me in my reflections on what bonsai are and the relationship I have with plants. I have some questions for you. What is bonsai for you? Besides a hobby, techniques, beauty, what is bonsai for you? A path, a relationship, learning, connection with yourself? hug and good work.
I made a video about that! czcams.com/video/C2d05bd1aH8/video.html
Excellent video and really appreciated the detail and voiceover.
“Watching paint dry is an action movie by comparison…” 😂😂🙏
This is such a well crafted video. A love letter to the Ginkgo, if you will. I am fortunate to have an old majestic ginkgo growing in my town and collected and germinated a bunch of seedlings this spring. I have about 30 seedlings that I hope to mold in various shapes in the future! Thank you for making this video.
I think it could be said that you have an obscure philosophy channel which uses bonsai for illustration rather than an obscure bonsai channel. I've given some thought to that oft-repeated statement that growing bonsai from seed takes too long. That only makes sense to me if your goal is to be the owner of a "finished" bonsai. For me, bonsai is something I do each day, much like a painter spends some of each day painting. The goal of a painter is not to own a finished painting, it is to create new paintings every day. The pace of bonsai is different from painting but it is enjoyable every day, not just on the day when you declare that a particular plant is "done".
Yes, and what happens when it's "finished"? There's no prize at the end, and would you feel like all the years of waiting were worth it? Interesting ideas.
beautiful video sir!
Another top video. Great tree too. Nicely done 👍🏼
I'm in awe. Just a matter of time before your channel takes off. Remarkable production and editing with some very refined bonsai skills combine to form something truly artistic!
Thank you! I think the audience for this channel will always be reasonably small; most people who watch bonsai videos are looking for instructional information, not thoughts about Leonard Cohen and Buddhism. But I decided a while back to just make the videos that I want to make, and I'm happy that there are some people who enjoy them.
👍👌
Very cool vids! Love the journalistic style of narration, it’s like listening to Anthony Bourdain talk about bonsai
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, it's good to hear that
I’m definitely enjoying the “young” trees, newly potted, no mistakes of mine yet made, natural in their growth
The tree looks fantastic, I think you did a great work! I also appreciate your philosophical thought on Leonard Cohen and Buddhism. He was an outstanding individual!
Thanks, I thought it turned out well, too. Maybe I'm getting better. Yes, he was. Not my philosophical thought, really - the thoughts of two people much wiser than me. But I hope I too can recognise when someone knows a lot more than I do.
What a perfect day to have recorded this with the ginkgo leave rain behind you at the tree - Brilliant
Thank you so much for your videos, they're so interesting and informative - love! <3
i love the spiral shape and the crazy work you put into this vid 🎉
Thing is… that short brought me to your channel because I thought it looked so good. The barrier to bonsai is extremely low but the pros make it look extremely high. At the end of the day, it’s just a tree. Don’t let negativity or criticism affect your ego, we all human, we fail, we learn, we become better. Take what you can from it and move on… just as in Bonsai… if you break a branch or make a mistake and have to cut something… let it go. Love your content, don’t let haters kill your mojo.
You can't draw conclusions based on just two small and young examples! We would need dozens of examples and a multi-year period: at least three years. 18 months is not enough to make any definitive conclusion.
You seem to think I owe you something. The plants are genetically identical and I found out what I wanted to know. But feel free to conduct the experiment you describe yourself.
I love this video! thank you
And just like that... a legend is born.
Watching paint dry is an action movie compared to this. Love that quote 😂
this video, its the most bonsai video that i was seen ever.
besides the ginkgo there are also various plant species that have tiny natural distributions but they are actually highly adaptable to different conditions and are planted everywhere such as the Metasequioa and Black locust
are ginkgos naturally spread by birds?
Found your account and so surprised there aren’t millions of subs. Amazing videos 😍
Easy to grow from cuttings too.
Bro’s eating the bonsai right in front of it.💀
Great video
This is the most under-rated bonsai channel on youtube.
I have killed so many trees that I am forced to say it appears necessary, at least in my case.
