    I bought one of these. I saw a Richard McKinley endorsement. The design for this easel is poor. The canvas supports, top and bottom...are only about 4-5 inches and will not hold anything steady. The "shelf" for supplies is flimsy, and for a pastelist - dangerous, and likely will break due to it being wood. This design leaves a lot to be desired. Had I known what I know now I would not have purchased. Richard McKinley - you should be ashamed of yourself. I will NEVER trust you again.

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 10 dny

      The success of gear such as this will really depend on the intended use. I agree the shelf was not very helpful, I wouldn't use it myself. However I've had no issues with the canvas supports. It may not work well if you were painting on something large or a canvas with thick stretcher bars, but for panels or 3/4" canvas it seems fine. Generally if someone is working plein air they aren't working big anyway. Obviously I am not Richard McKinley, however I would assume positive intent and that reviewers are doing their best to give an honest opinion.

    Well the artist quality paint cost 3-4 times more than the student where is the cost savings ? Im going to get 200ml of student and 50ml of artist, isnt it a wash ?

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 18 dny

      It might be a wash financially, but the quality of the artist grade will be much better than the student grade. You may have to mix a high quantity of student grade paint to get the color you are going for (depends on the color) if you are even able to get there, and then you will likely just use a small portion of it. W/ the artist grade paint you can mix a small quantity of paint to get your color and are more likely to get it due to the high quality. If your work doesn't require high-saturation mixtures and you anticipate using lots of paint, student grade is fine. However if you are going to need to do a lot of high-saturation mixing and aren't doing large work w/ impasto, I'd definitely go with artist grade.

    Wasn't the Impressionist avant garde hating the high standards of technique of neoclassicism and romanticism? Isn't that why they disparaged Bougereau? We are fortunate enough to have the Broken Pitcher and Nymphs in California. Most people don't even know that the nymphs painting is here , because it's in the Haggins museum which is in the high crime city of Stockton. I 100% agree: no one does figure like Bougereau. Also Bougereau was so good at expression. All his faces have some subtle emotion captured. The Broken Pitcher is a masterpiece in layers of emotions

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 18 dny

      Yes, they were rebelling against a more classical motif which emphasized a high-finish vs. sketchy look, so Bouguereau was considered out-of-fashion. I agree that if someone really stops to look at his work it is much more than just technical mastery; he excels at creating an emotional drama that can be wonderful

    Native Americans were here making art for centuries before the Hudson River school artists. Their are is truly the first American art movement!

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 2 měsíci

      Not really... "America" did not exist as an entity prior to European settlement. Of course you had different people groups creating artwork, but it wasn't America as we know it today.

    • @peggychristensen4819
      @peggychristensen4819 Před 2 měsíci

      What do you call the art movements of native people here on this continent before 1776?

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 2 měsíci

      By the name of their ethnic group/tribe? When people use the term "American Art", they are most often referring to artwork made within the context of the country, United States of America. In that case, the Hudson River School was the first true "American" art movement, as it was distinct from the work in Europe at the time. I'm guessing people in the Algonquin nation would prefer their artwork be known as "Algonquin", not "American".

    Having a presentation due soon, i have been searching everywhere for videos on The Hudson River school. No videos were actually informative in a well spoken way like this. Thank you! you are a life saver. Just one question, do you have a timeline of when each of these things happened?

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 2 měsíci

      Happy to help! I do not have a timeline per-say, however it all started with Thomas Cole who was born in 1801 and active as an artist starting in the 1820's, then the movement was pretty much wrapped up by 1875. So 1825-1875 is a good time bracket. Bierstadt/Church gained their fame in the 1850's.

  • @kznsq77
    @kznsq77 Před 2 měsíci

    Thanks for the video. But: 1 Do not buy really cheap paints. 2 Do not expect the same result mixing low-pigmented paints with high-pigmented Winton is really good, but much cheaper than Artists' series, for example. You can use it and get excellent results. It is even more convenient to use it because you haven't struggle with excessive pigmentation right from a tube. So, Winton and Van Gogh are example of really good paints much cheaper than "artist grade"

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 2 měsíci

      There is nothing wrong with using the Winton paints. I would consider it to be "mid-tier" oil paint, with the very cheap paint you see in hobby stores being the bottom tier.

    Bouguereau is hardly ever mentioned in general art appreciation courses. Bouguereau was an artist, whereas Rothko was just an angry bolshevik, and the Dadaists were jokers with their ready-made junk.

    Just an advise, you can leave most student paints sitting on a cardboard for a week or two, after that they are gonna be stiff but most of the oil and binder is kinda gone at that point, if you reactivate those paints with spirits or an oil their pigmentation feels like artitst grade paints, that is if you cannot afford those paints or if you already have cheap oil paints sitting around.

    When I was 11 I joined The Boy Scouts. Every month I got to go camping one weekend and 2 weeks in Summer. So I fell in love with The Catskills and would search for boooks on The Catskills in The Library. I saw all these photos and my goal was to hike in the same places. By the 70's I was back packing all over the 700,000 acres of The Catckill Park. I have been to every peak and know all the trails which were once paths The Native Americans used. In 2004 I at last moved to The Catskills full time and in 1971 lived in a Commune. In 2004 I decided to become an Artist and capture the Beauty of it all. Since 2004 I have taken over 1/4 million photos. I have posted them on Social Media since way before My Space. My idea was to post them along with a famous Quote that would match the photo. I have never had a show or sold any of my work. Never wanted MONEY to be any part of my Art. I firmly believe Art is for The People and a gift. Also I knew my photos were documenting something very special we would lose soon. Sadly that has come to pass and someday people will see my photos and say....Oh My God it was so beautiful. Thomas Cole and Monet had a Huge infulence on my style. None of my photo are filtered and I use a Cannon 35 MM set on Manual. BTW i will be 73 this May and can no longer hike since I am disabled. I am far from bitter since I did it all and have some amazing memories. Also when I worked for numerous Brokerage houses in Wall Street the Orignals of Thomas Coles work hang in many board rooms. I’ve gotten started with the W&N Winton Student grade paints and am used to blending colors with them after 5 years. Without having any experience with the higher grade paints to inform my opinion I’d say I have no real complaints with the workability or general experience with the Winton but would be concerned if there was evidence that the lower grade paint didn’t hold up as well in the long term.

    • @fountatelier
      @fountatelier Před 8 měsíci

      They are fine to use; the biggest issues are with the more intense colors and their tinting strength. The WN Winton paints will still be a big step up from the Hobby Store brands.

    Winsor and newton have relatively affoardable artist grade paints. If you have to get like winton. The main thing is, don’t get a lot of colours. Get good colours and learn to mix. Try stuff. Learn how to move a colour round the colour wheel and such. If I could only have 4 I’d go with something like a cadmium red or similar (winsor red, primary red, pyrrol red), cadmium yellow or lemon yellow, and a blue, maybe ultramarine or winsor blue red shade, but lots will work. Last one is white. Titanium. Zink is shown to crack or delaminate very quickly and led is hard to find. If I could have 1 more I’d go with black or burnt umber, and If I mostly like portraits I’d just swap the yellow for an ocre or yellow iron oxide, cut out the blue and brown, and go with a cool black.
