    It's a shame, Record used to be the dominant brand & leading supplier in NZ now, "you can't purchase record tools or machinery in NZ to save yourself" (our club and personally tried many times). Big stores only promote their own brands or sell items in kit packs (woodturning items, chucks or carving chisels etc), which causes double ups - they don't even stock Record machines in NZ. Growing up woodturning record was the most reputable dominant brand in the home workshop and woodturning/carvinvg clubs throughout NZ, due to record product becoming extremely difficult to purchase (agents didn't even return enquiries!!). This has allowed other brands to rule the market which will make the switch back to record almost impossible. Such a shame to have an awesome product that was once tool to look up to removed from the shelves - only way to buy record items is through old hand stores - what a waste. Attention Mike from NZ, if your serious about having an online presence so people can actually purchase record products in NZ flick me a message - (I'm often on TurnersTV lives). Otherwise it's such shame to see an awesome product go to waste. On a good note, great demo - would be great (recommend) to educate and show how you safety fold/unfold the blades. Stay safe.

    • @RecordPowerTV
      @RecordPowerTV Před 2 měsíci

      Hi Gavin - The indexing disc of the Herald has been designed so it is out of the way during use to prevent accidental engagement. In addition, if the indexing pin is engaged before starting the machine, when the machine is started the Herald will show an error message, which stops accidental starting with the pin engaged. Hope this helps!

      @@RecordPowerTV Hi - thanks for the reply. I now have my Herald and do notice it has a slight lock indent position but if for any reason one is clumsy it could actually quite easily be knocked into the lock position whilst running. Maybe it needs an upgrade to a better pull out turn sort of mechanism to go in instead of the small dimple. Food for thought for the design team

    Hello Peter. This is an extremely valuable video. I'm about to replace the bearings in exactly the same lathe. Just a quick question. I see there are 3 bearings. Looks like 2 at the drive end and 1 bearing at the motor and belt end. Do the 2 bearings at the drive end butt up to each other, or is there a gap between the 2 bearings. I appreciate your maintenance videos and hope you can help me with my question. Best wishes, Richard

    I've been using the RP3000 chuck for the past 30 years, and The SC4 is a total revelation, it's so so much better in every respect. I 'm still using my old "Coronet No 0 "lathe, ( changed the bearings and belt last month, which, as it turned out was totally unnecessary as the originals were still perfect ) For anyone contemplating a new chuck, go for the SC4 rather than the SC3 which looks very similar, as the 4 is "future proof" having adapter rings for different spindles, whereas with the 3, you buy the one to suit the lathe. My old lathe has the outmoded 3/4 in 16tpi thread, but when I update the lathe, simple matter to buy a new adapter. Of course, on my setup, there was no need for the grub screw and washer, as the lathe doesn't have a reverse. Beautiful bit of kit, sadly though, no longer made in Sheffield I believe.

    This is a brilliant benchtop lathe, I bought one 3 years ago over here in Spain and love it to bits. It has plenty of power and grunt when needed and is as solid as a rock, I have mine bolted down to the workbench and get no vibrations at all. I am nowconsideringbuyingthebedextension for longer spindles and upgrading the tool rest to make use of the swing head more now I have more experience of the lathe. I dont use it every day because over here in the summer it is just too hot for 3 months in my workshop but the rest of the year it gets a good workout!! If your anovicedontworry,Iwasandthiswasmy first andprobably lastlateh asI seeitlastinglongerthan me the way it is built forsure. Dont bother with cheaper machines you will just be so disappointed compared to this. Just make sure you have live centres, a drill chuck ,a good set of chucks and plates when you can afford it and definitely buy the bed extension and long rigger toolr est for the swing head. I also use my to turn down non ferrous metals such as ALi, Brass and Copper. I made a simple tool post that clamps to the bed and allows me to uss Carbide and HSS bits for turning the Non Ferrous metals accurately, I also use carbide chisels, I'm a qualified engineer not a traditionalist and use the best tools for the job in hand. I have lots of respect for those people that use steel chisels but I havent got the patience, time or the money to buy all the gear needed to sharpen a chisel on very expensive diamond wheels when in a couple of ticks I can change the carbide insert around and carry on for another 500 hours . I have tried a friends set of steel chisels and to be honest I cant really tell the difference between the two apart from the odd tool marks you occasionally get andI put that down to inexperience, as long as you have a sharp chisel be it carbide tipped or good old tool steel it will do the job and remove wood. Enjoy your purchases as this is a Damn fine British machine made by a company who has a pedigree.

    I have got one too, after years of using a Myford Mystro Ioved that Lathe and it too had a revolving headstock, comparing this the Hearald takes too long to go from forward to reverse and you always have to reset once stoped so you are slowed down then, also the motor doesnt slow down quickly enough so you are slowed down again. It is a good lathe and I do enjoy using it . I do have plenty of time now as I'm retired .If I was working on it, I think I would be fustrated by hav ing to wait at the points mentioned .

      @@RecordPowerTV Your welcome. I am attracted to the over all design with a rotating head stock. Like I said I have been researching for the last two years. My shop measures 16ft x 22ft. I need a lathe that has a smaller footprint & can be bench mounted with a larger turning ability of 14 plus inches. Having the ability to rotote the head opens up many options within my speaker designs that I could not find elsewhere unless I buy a much larger lathe. I've been a woodworker most of my adult life, absolutely love it..! I will start a 2nd CZcams Channel dedicated just for woodworking. Can't wait to do an unboxing video & reveiw..!

    Hi there. I’m from across the pond and in the market for a first lathe. I’m in the process of setting up a shop for woodworking in general but have always had an interest in turning, since I did it in shop class decades ago haha. I did want to comment on your YT channel as being one of if not THE best I’ve seen for any company, at least in the woodworking world. Impressed with the wealth of content on the machinery, tools, and just as important, the “how tos” of it all! I’m thinking seriously of the Herald model which seems to me the best in the class for the cost. Highland Woodworking has it on sale so hopefully will take the plunge soon😊👍. From some of the videos I’ve seen, it’s great for a beginner but also well beyond. Thx for the great content! I especially appreciated the teaching style of Theo here. Quite understandable and detailed approach, as well as a relaxed friendly way about him I find very engaging.

In terms of things like a basic chuck (or possibly more than one), would a 4” chuck be a good one to start? I realize as I get going there’s more and more options, like the screw chuck, face lates etc. In terms of tools, would love to get some “essentials” that will also be important as time goes on. Thx again for a great site and needless to say tools.
