You shoot amazing portraits! I am a beginner, still afraid to do my first wet plate collodion... Bought three 4x5 cameras, and need to learn more before doing it. If you have any advise for me I will really appreciate.

The AF3 also has a filter ring mount. It's only the AF2 that doesn't have it. The AF3 actually addresses some of the issues you talked about. It has a better battery compartment and no pop-up flash. It has a button to override use of flash. The AF3 flash also has an automatic diffuser for fill light. It does sport a specialty battery, a CR-P2 - but on the other hand it lasts 50 rolls (with 30% flash photos) and up to 5 years. (no leakage) So the trade-off right be worth it. It also turns off automatically, so no worry of forgetting to turn the camera off. No ISO setting and only 4 element lense though - so it is a bit of a compromise.

I bought the original version of this in 1983, in Hong Kong at a time when it had hardly reached US or other Western markets. From my reading stuff then, as I recall, this was Nikon's first foray into AF/Point and Shoots, and they were determined to make it an absolute cracker of a camera, and the whole feel of quality around the device was very much commented on. In particular, the lens. I owned mine until about 5 years ago. I had though stopped using it around the mid 90's, when I had bought a new point and shoot that was quieter in operation. I never had any real gripes with the L35, well satisfied with the photos I took with it. There was one thing that became increasingly irksome. The lens cap/cover that had to manually removed and replaced everytime I used the camera. That was a main reason why I bought a new camera in the mid 90's. That, and I just fancied a new camera, as you do !
