I was once told by a co worker, when u split from your spouse...and you are the reason for said split, and then they pass away, the tears fall not for the love you've lost, no, all the pain of failing that spouse and the what ifs hit you hard. If there are children, the pain hits even deeper. Charles wasn't an asshole, royalty created a barrier he couldn't live with- he never wished Diana harm.

Still remember that and hearing about it on the news. It was just horrific, and it happened just as she started to put a livable life together for herself. And her kids ... I remember how angry people were that Charles and the Queen didn't speak about it for some time, but damn it, they had two little boys to take care of. Family comes first, including for them. I remember watching the news report of the car crash. It was the night before my brother's birthday, so he and I were allowed to stay up late. The reporters were broadcasting from outside the tunnel, while Tom Cruise was being interviewed on CNN (I think?) about his and Nicole's problems with the paparazzi. My mother, an ER nurse, was pacing back and forth in the living room, and kept saying, "They're still trying to stabilize her?! For goodness sake, why don't they get her to a hospital?!"

She died One year and One day after my Mother. Crazy thing is, my mom was born in 1954, when Elizabeth was already Queen. Elizabeth was Queen for my Mothers entire life, from start to finish. Do not tell me she wasn’t important, my Mother idolized Queen Elizabeth II. She said, “That’s the classiest woman I’ve ever seen.”

I do truly believe that while Charles never loved Diana romantically as his life partner, he did have a love for her as the mother of his children, and by the end, even as a friend. Diana herself said they actually got along better than ever after the divorce was finalized. I’m glad that The Crown, even with all of its creative liberties, depicted Charles as being truly devastated by her death - because he probably really was.
