Welsh Ride Thing 2024
Our annual pilgrimage to Wales for the Welsh Ride Thing. We were blessed with amazing weather and great trail conditions, aside from the one section where the trail on the map didn't exist in the real world! Due to a lack of suitable tent pitching and a navigation error we ended up back the the start late sunday night, so we ended up just going home early. Moral of the story: you can't get tent pegs into a wind farm access road, and trust your own navigation, not someone who you ran into on the trail!

What did you film with excellent footage
Could have made a great vid , lots of human interest but this is mostly a go pro on a back wheel ,shame I was looking forward to a informative video
How long is Koko Claims?
Hi great video can I ask where this is at all please
One of the many trails off of Long Mynd, Church Stretton
@@jimbarrow5326 thank you appreciate it
Theres incredible places to ride everywhere in wales, where i live at least
Fair play! I felt tired just watching .
Where was the gravel
Just confirmed with Adventure Cycling, Koko Claims Pass is part of the racers route on "Tour Divide". It is not mapped on the ACA Great Divide Route for us regular touring cyclists riding the Great Divide Route. Skip Koko Claims Pass and you're still on the original route.
Nice
From a fellow 2023 Escapader Jim, congrats! I had to stop at Stonegate on the morning of my 4th day from total exhaustion and lack of food intake. You made that look easy. I got cooked on the South Downs Way in that blasted headwind. My full frame bag was like a sail and made me nearly blow over! I'll be back in 2025 to attack it again. My own video diary of the failed attempt... czcams.com/video/EMwZlbLwrIs/video.html
I get riding with flashing rear lights on the road (i do ) but on the trail ? that would have me pissed off following al day ,just saying .
You can't switch them off, we both have them, I just don't notice!
That motel looked cosy after all that wetness ….the timber motel 🥳👍🏻
Can i please ask the name of your waterproof trousers?
They are the Patagonia mtb ones, can’t remember the model name, but they were the only ones they did when I bought them. They have been excellent, I would really recommend them 👍🏻
Hi, yeah they're Patagonia dirt roamer storm pants
I don't miss that cold, soggy rain! But into a Divide ride, a little soggy rain must fall. :)
Very cool will follow
What month was this filmed, please?
June 2022
Looking forward to your Day 4 video!
It’ll be about a week!
So good! I miss that brutal epic! Another great video, Jim!
Great video as always. Jim!!
Looks like an incredible, unforgettable experience. Thx for the video.
Kit breakdown ! What did you take 😀👍🏻
I like riding a bike. I just dont like sleeping outside 🙈 Congrats on the ride 👌
Glad you never killed yourself and made it to the end=)
So am I! 😂
Great video. Kevin and I have just watched he was blissfully unaware you were recording 😂
Ahhh, Koko...Did it when I was 67 years old, 2017. Compared to the old Flathead route through Sparwood, I much prefer doing neither! I do look forward to it again next year though: Being what we call in the bikepacking trade as a 'slow learner'. Good on ya for the video.
Was that a bear around 5:20 when you stopped ?!
That bear encounter would have made me 💩 😅 loved how the huge logging truck slowed down for you, and even tooted his horn!!
Holy moly indeed Jim 😮
It was character building 😂
A bad day on a bike is still better than a good day just about anywhere else
Indeed it is 😎
You did well negotiating that steep, loose slate section down to the footbridge on the last day, especially with it being wet (and being on gravel bikes!) Must admit that I had to walk down that section (and a few others!).
That bit was a bit spicy, those last bits after that though were a right handful 😂
Looks like you missed the best trails down to Dovey Junction
We cut off back to the road at Bwlch, it was absolutely pissing it down and getting back to the van seemed far more preferable 😂
@@jimbarrow5326 I would have done the same
What’s best for the trans Cambrian way…my Gravel bike or my full suspension mtb ?
We did it on gravel bikes, but they have 2.3” tyres. I guess it depends on the level of comfort you want. Either will be fine, the final descent will be a lot more fun on a full suspension.
@@jimbarrow5326 cheers dude
Jolly nice trip squire ! People have said it’s hard to wild camp in Cornwall....but I’d say that was not the case...stealth stealth stealth...do you have a video of the kit you used? 🙂👍🏻
Thanks. You know what? I haven’t done a kit video, perhaps I should do that next…..
@@jimbarrow5326 be nice to see! Cheers 🍻🙂👍🏻
Great tour dude! Lot's of ups and downs :-) Many thanks for sharing...... are you just using your phone? It's a good picture, what are you using if you don't mind? Just getting into this bikepacking malarky too :-)
Hi, thanks for watching, I use a combination of my old GoPro and my iPhone 11. This video was all iPhone, if you watch the Trans Cambrian Way video all the on bike shots are GoPro and you can actually see they are poorer quality. I think it’s probably time to get a newer GoPro now.
@@jimbarrow5326 cheers, yeah I'm trying to justify the £300+ price tag!!
Hey Jim, cheers from Germany, amazing film. England looks pretty wild. I love cycling and filming myself, I was with my wife, our son and dog for 3 weeks in Denmark by bicycle. I uploaded a few videos about it on my channel. Maybe someone wants to check it out, I would be more then happy, it is even with english subtitles. Take care Volker
Thanks for the video Jim . What tyres were you using ? Thanks
Hi Barry, three out of the four of us use Vittoria Mezcals for the bikepacking trips now. They seem to be pretty durable and also offer a good compromise between off road grip and reasonable speed when on tarmac.
@@jimbarrow5326 thanks for the info 👍
I Enjoyed that Jim! Thanks for sharing :)
Awesome, cheers dude 🍻
@@jimbarrow5326 ps, you BoD theme rendition was funny too 🙂
Great video, did the Trans Cambrian several years ago (pre CZcams 😩), was a brilliant trip, probably the most isolated I’ve ever felt cycling in the UK.
Yeah it’s one of my favourite areas of Wales, I love the remoteness
So beautiful, there is no place like the grand canyon and the best way to see it is by bike : )
Yep, it was an awesome trip 😎

Cheers dude 👍🏻
That is one epic trip, must have taken a lot of planning. 👍
There was quite a bit involved, but I also merged together some existing routes. The bit the other side of Plymouth was the hardest part and there were a few issues.
The wessex way creature could be lurking in those woods
And winter camping makes summer camping SOOOO much better! Bivy on!
Yeah for sure, summer evenings feel fine after putting up with all that!
Love you Brits. Hope to ride with you guys in 2021.
Karl Stine I’ll be there!
Good job dude!
Good on you for taking your time over it - refreshing to watch someone do it without huge mileages and some rest days.
Your video reminds me just how much I hate coming across bears in B.C., amongst other dangerous wildlife. I would recommend you staying away from the colour red in your kit or clothing. A black bear usually has better things to do, but not a cougar. You don't want to confuse a cougar with something (you) that may appear to them as blood on a deer. It is one way to protect yourself from a stalking predator. Travel with a mate, bear spray, make lots of noise along the way and handle your food with care. Very nice video. Thank you.
Hi, i'm currently in training for this now. Do you know if the Tim Woodcock's MTB coast to coast route is the same as the Wainwrights coast to coast route? as the Wainwright one is the one I've planned to do and it's known for hiking. This is also the best video I've seen so far on mountain biking the route. Cheers.
Aaron Reilly thanks 🙏Tim Woodcocks route is different, the wainwright one uses some footpaths, the TW one is the nearest equivalent that is legal for bikes I believe. It’s a great route, have fun, I’d like to do it again!
@@jimbarrow5326 Thanks, I've now found the TW route on my OS app and after seeing your video, i'll be doing he TW rather than the Wainwright route. I noticed you stayed in hostels and we plan to wild camp but Hostels could be an option. What we're thoughts on staying in the Hostels ? did you have to pre book them, were they expensive and you have to set your timings/ checkpoints based on getting to the hostels in time? Also thanks for answering the last comment so fast. Cheers.
Aaron Reilly we did pre book, but it made it pretty tough, when conditions put us behind we had to cut off road sections and use road several times when time was tight, an extra day would have made it easier. When I do it again I’ll probably wild camp TBH.
@@jimbarrow5326 Thanks, i'll stick to the wild camping then ( as that's more my thing) and i'll trust that it's good for wild camping seeing as you've proven the route. Cheers again.
Aaron Reilly yeah TBH there are plenty of places and even a couple of bothies on the route too. Mosedale bothy looked amazing, I’d like to go back and stay there 😎
Didn’t inspire like your other vids Jim
