Shindaiwa trimmer common failure points: T242, T230, T272
Sharing the things I saw when repairing 2-stroke trimmers. Perhaps this video is 20 years too late and is all about Shindaiwa! In the early 2000s these machines were in their prime. I still think these, pound for pound, are some of the best old fashion trimmers.

How did you measure the taper of the piston for making the mould for this?
Good question! Short answer is from modeling off old existing piston. Long answer: Measure skirt diameter, distance from skirt to top of piston, top of piston diameter, then finally connect the diameter points two dimensional to “vanishing point”. All that would give you the angle at the point theoretical convergence. As for thermal expansion my best guess
i got a 500 foreman i got lights and everything but no power to the starter button and it wont fire when i jump it over or pull start it got any idea what that could be bro ?
Hi I'm Wayne! I live in the Hedgesville WV area and am looking for a good friend or friends that like to ride motorcycles (especially ADV motorcycles), go fishing, camping, back road and trail riding, exploring, or just hanging out with like minded people! If you or anyone you know needs a good friend, like I do, and is interested in getting out of the house and going on some adventures please let me know!
Did you have to take it apart to fix the oil leak?
I can’t see how much that is off but I proved that the top dot is slightly off from factory in one of my videos with lazer and my bike runs great. The timing in the book is explained differently on the dots with the top of the head and counting cam chain pin links.
What would cause one of these models to make a knocking sound?
#1 thing I would check is clutch condition. Last thing I would check is connecting rod/ crank bearing.
Hey man, I have a question. If the factory size jet is 38, but you ended up with a 52, what happened? Is there some other issue that made it necessary to change the jet size? Did you also have to change out the main jet too? Ok I had 3 questions.
I think the confusion is this carburetor was not OEM but sold as an incorrect replacement.
Exactly. I'm in the same boat. My bike didn't come with an OEM carb, so I bought a clone. At first it ran way too rich, then I set the needle clip to the 2nd from top position. Now it does just like the bike in the video.
I’d say any old shindaiwa is worth fixing… “First to start last to quit” ended when echo ruined them. Found a NOS Shindaiwa T2500… I bought it on the spot. Maruyama is the only current trimmer I’d buy.
Hey! Liked and subscribed! Great video!
Cool! What issue did you find on yours?
Nice work. I was not so lucky :)
Oh sorry to hear, I hope I didn’t underplay it that was a pretty tedious job! I almost gave up!

Whats that program for valve clearance?
Thank God for this video, our 79 kombi van was idling way too low and thanks to this video we found the screw to adjust the idle speed, cheers from Perth Australia 😊
where did you get the side tank grips and size
It has been too long for me to remember exactly but probably Ebay-azon key word search “motorcycle tank knee pad”. They are usually a non model specific grip sticker and can be trimmed with scissors.
Not sure why some want to push the end into the small end of the boot. Good call
you do good job but no one shows where the timeing marks on the magneto go i have a kx250f need timeing done
What other motorcycle brand parts is the husky 650 compatible with?

Hey... I just wanted to thank-you. I have a 66 Honda S90 and your video helped me figure out the no spark issue. The comment section is not turned on in that video so I commented on this vid. Thanks again
Thanks! I was having trouble in that comment section because I used a "R" word to describe delayed ignition timing. what a world
Best way to assess top dead center is to take two points before and after tdc at the same distance (5mm / 1/4") and then to take the middle. Much more accurate...
This looks fun to drive
Wow
Exact same thing happened to me. But couldn't find the manufacturer. Do you have a contact?
Sorry, Not any more. This was some time ago now.
Hello @gizmowerks can you help me find the full kit of husqvarna tr650s crankshaft...
Just out of curiosity, have you tried the TR 650 Terra? Its 21" spoked front wheel opens up a whole world of alternatives that would make it much better off road.
Sooo. How do you like my old bike? BTW I gave Chase all the take off parts inc.. the stock seat cover and foam. I still have the GPR titanium exh . I had on it .

Awesome video- I have a GT250 (1974) that I got at the HUGE auction/show in Carlisle Pa, for 500.00. I am making a little cafe out of her for my wife. Going through everything now and getting ready to install points and condensers. I was going to go with electronic ignition, but for now- just the old school way. Thanks for the great video! By the way, I subscribed and "liked"
Hey can you fix my kx?
How do I contact you guys for help building my own tug similar to this one?
Sorry, It was just a one time thing. I welded the frame up with some angle iron, used a Roboclaw motor controller, amazon tx rx, and two jazzy scooter motors. You will have to build your wheel hub adapters on a lathe
@@GizmowerksWhat kind Jazzy wheelchair motors?
A proper adventure
Thanks!
Looks like an awesome trip man, have always wanted to do a top gear type road trip, how'd your luggage rack and skid plate hold up?
Dave, It was awesome! Skid plate took some bangs! From time to time I heard stuff bang off it like a gong. We talked about Shmidt tunnel and all the fun to be had out your way.
Hi, I’m looking to build something similar to this. Would you mind telling me how you secured the wheel pan? Did you use a linear actuator, electromagnets or is it manual only?
The ramp/pan cams over with the weight of the tail wheel and hits a bolt stopper in a slot. To keep it locked in that slot another nut is run down finger tight. That way the plane can be pushed or pulled in either direction. I got lucky with the pivot point angle. Good luck with your project, keep it simple
Your bell housing is a mid 1929. Very helpful video!
That checks out. The shifter was definitely out of an earlier year than ‘31. It bumps into the dashboard slightly
Good luck brother, sounds like a fun experience
hello, i'm thinking of buying this bike for long travel with my wife. is it comfortable with a pillion ? thank's
Yes, absolutely but it depends on what you call a long ride. There are tons of bikes available for specific needs and the Tr650 doesn't come to mind for double up riding comfort. It could be done I am sure. After 7 consecutive days riding on the bike my friend broke his chain. I threw my pack off the pillion and he rode on back the 30 miles required to get help. Handled fine haha
Gizmowerks! bravo!insane . =)
Really enjoying these vids, have been doing similar stuff to my also newish TR650. Check out the SW-Motech engine guards they go on in five minutes and will protect the radiator for certain. Mounts to the upper side engine mount near the head and the top bolt of that lower central engine mount. The Happy Trails skid plate is a tank if you decide to buy one instead.
Thanks for the info!
Yo hope you and the big red are still around... mine is over jetted .. if fuel is on it get way to much gas and only shittly runs full throttle .. when i turn fuel off with it running after a few seconds it runs and revs like a champ for a few seconds Then dies.. my cheap carb is different from yours it came with my BR.. so not sure if it matters on that fact but what were the final jet sizes .. i didnt hear ya say.. thanks good video .. maybe update description with jets sizes
Do you have the link to the clone carb you have? I’ve bought 2 so far and they are way too big and not the correct fit for my big red.
Amazing. You saved me both time and money!
Update: I let this engine go to a guy building Kolb Fireflys
Did you have to change anything on the wiring or on the machine, besides the plug, to swap between 110 and 220 v?
I am looking for a ignition for my Suzuki GT185 / what make is this.
I like the video my basket keep going up and down and water doest get hot any help thank you
Thanks. This video is exactly what I needed to see.
JUST SUBSCRIBED!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow what a great idea I’m getting a brand new hand brake cable tomorrow my snap. I just bought a 1998 Honda fourtrax 450ES green just like the one you have . I have to replace the temperature sensor sometimes red light comes on but goes away I will start with that then I will see if is something else. Fan works I heard it sometimes. Thank you so much for sharing
Good to find your channel, I'm the other guy with a TR 😁
Hey bud, what does one do about the front end sliding under (front tire skids) offroad ? Wet rocks and clay have gotten me 4X in the last 1,000 miles. Has been manageable otherwise.
@@Gizmowerks Not really sure Could be suspension if the tyres are right. I run 70/30 tyres but don't do much more than forestry roads. I find the bike is lighter and more manageable than my mates Tennere.
I also kinda think once you go to serious dual sport the smaller bikes might be as better option.
