Delaney Davidson // Devil In The Parlour
Official selection at 2017's DocEdge Festival, Devil in the Parlour is a documentary about New Zealand’s very own travelling troubadour Delaney Davidson; loop maestro, noir protagonist, promotional coyote and production svengali.
This documentary is about the endless touring of musician Delaney Davidson throughout Europe and the USA. Featuring live tour footage with his ‘Ghost Orchestra’ at the iconic Wunderbar in Lyttelton and incidental “never heard before “music written on the road which has, until now, been stored in Delaney’s deep, dark vaults.
Throughout the film we get insights into his creative process, his songwriting habits and inspirations, and his view of the world with its quirks and human foibles. Delaney’s wry sense of humour and his theatre of unease are a feature though the film.
As well as being an award winning songwriter, he is also a keen videographer. For Devil in the Parlour, the director and editor, Harley Williams used mostly Delaney's footage humbly shot on his iPhone whilst touring the world to help fuse the story together.
Produced by Ruffell Productions.

So cool
Finally got to see this Harley. Awesome. I missed out on this phase of Lyttelton due to the fact that I had Al's Bar but so good to finally get to see what I was missing. So good to have it recorded and great to see the "old" Lyttelton on this day, 22nd February,2023.
cool film!
Nice work Harley, a different time captured forever!

Such good times! And sad that they’re over… But life goes on, and it’s still a scene. 💝 Great work Harley my friend xo
Thanks Marla. Was so nice having you play at one of the shows.
So bittersweet watching this. I miss this time in my life. Thanks so much for capturing it, friend
Thanks Hadassah. I'm glad you liked it.
Amazing seeing all those old places intact - monster, harbourlight - nice one
A bygone era! Thanks Stephen.
My Dad Cliff McEwin was friends with Mark and Beverly Kahi. I was taught ukulele from Tommy Kahi. That whole family were great. Loved them all.
Hell Yeah this is rockabilly at it's finest
Aldous Harding on backing vocals, in blue dress.
Hell yeah
Tommy taught me guitar, then when Mark came home from Sydney he taught me classical guitar. Tom, Mark & George (who had the most fantastic bass singing voice and was a great double bass player) were great friends of the family. Many happy memories of parties with them playing all night! Thanks for uploading. Any more???
Stu taught me clarinet at Ashburton College, and later when I switched to oboe, he advised and ecouraged me, even though he was not an oboe player. I last saw him in the early '90s when he was coaching a big band at the CSM
That's my great Uncle Tom, what a player! Wish I could have had a few guitar lessons from him. Remember seeing Stu at his funeral. Great piece of history, glad this video is up online!
I used to get lessons from Tommy at his place on the corner on Marine Parade, ChCh. Early to mid 80's. Good man.
@@chemicaljonez Me too Chris then I went onto the Manchester Street studio to teach the beginners Tom Dooley
Lovely smooth soprano playing, almost clarinet-like in tone. So pleased you could post this delightful performance!
This anthem should have way more views.
One wild man loved it.

I heard them today at Art Beat. I was amazed and slightly taken by them! just incredible
Gotta love bands that think they're back in the 20's. Then their iPhone rings :s awkward!
These folks are amazing & salt of the earth. Any chance of getting the lyrics? Can't find them online anywhere...
I think you'll find he's one of the most humble musicians you'll find, what draws you to this conclusion is beyond me...
