Institute of Design (ID)
United States
Registrace 11. 01. 2016
The Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech was founded in Chicago by Bauhaus émigré László Moholy-Nagy in 1937. It has since pioneered human-centered design, systems design, and a methods-based approach to design. Today ID is home to the only US design school devoted completely to graduate students-the first US school to offer the PhD in design. Uniting science and rigor with creativity and rapid iteration, ID focuses on the systems that shape modern life (including cities, education, finance, food, healthcare, and technology) and building new worlds from them, together. John Maeda and Anijo Mathew: Redefining Design in the Era of AI
John Maeda, VP of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft, and our very own Anijo Mathew, Dean at ID, explore the future of design in the era of AI. Will AI eliminate form?
This talk illustrates how AI can directly address functional needs and render traditional forms obsolete. Through this lens, these AI experts explore the future of design, where AI not only shapes form but potentially eliminates it. AI is truly ushering in a new paradigm where function dictates existence without the constraints of physical form.
John Maeda
John Maeda is an American technologist. and a product experience leader across consumer and enterprise. He was an early catalyst for generative art and computational design for commercial applications across Web2 and Web3. Maeda was the first recipient of White House’s National Design Award for algorithmically-generated visualizations informed by data + AI. He is also a noted book author, online influencer, and investor in diverse startups. Maeda currently serves as the Vice President of Design and Artificial Intelligence at Microsoft.
Anijo Mathew
Anijo Mathew is Dean and a Professor at the Institute of Design focused on entrepreneurship and urban technology. He is also the director of the ID Academy. His research evaluates new models of innovation enabled by technology and media convergence through the lenses of design fiction, design-led innovation, and entrepreneurship. He works with global organizations to adapt and change strategic responses to transforming technologies.

PhD researcher Cecilia Tham discussed how combining the rigor of science with the imagination of design can help us navigate the unknown and create a better future. Futurists are often tasked with envisioning, preparing, prototyping, and rehearsing for the future-even when much of it remains uncertain. In this talk, Cecilia MoSze Tham explored how combining the rigor of science with the imagina...

Thanks for uploading!
Appreciated the sincerity here. Thank you ID & Walter Hood. Lovely video..
Blowing my mind how you've word-ified so much of what I've been feeling/seeing. My goodness! I only just found the term "sociotechnical systems". Gonna have to thank GPT-4('s data transformed from a source of humankind, but of course - sometimes term-finding is all I really need. Terminologists, where art thou? Ontological engineering? Faceted, analytico-synthetic classification(Woo Ranganathan(Boo dewey decimal) lol)[OWL, Protege?)? Okay I'm only 21min in lol back to watching. More terms :0
this is amazing to see how futuring meets with tangible design, once it gets tangible then lots of system level reflection and opportunity happens!
Amazing!

you know what not to do when it hurts physically seeing the researcher on the video do it
This was a really valuable conversation; thank you for sharing!
Loved her book The Grid. Fascinating to learn about electricity’s history, current issues and possible future. Happy to see Gretchen still talking about our future with electricity.
This was such an amazing talk, loved hearing about Carolina's experiences! Thank you for uploading to CZcams 😊
Jesus loves you all please repent of your sins God Bless you and your family
great video instructing the dos and donts. btw nice bg music.
brave statement - it would be nice to see the various projects go somewhere, perhaps a place we who are not so highly educated can go. I work and have worked with many designers but we are not restrained by our tools we dont even need much in the way of communication for our projects to work, just understanding However, perhaps the finished item is not what this is about?
The best mlp and systems lecture I have ever heard
Doesn't anyone see his fake hat ??
sup
Before it was called "desgn thinking" it was "systems analysis", see for instance www.mdpi.com/2077-0472/6/4/65

What song is used during the pole piece? Thanks!
What a great talk. I love how he thinks. Very clear, thoughtful and inspiring. I just bought the book:)
It was a great talk!
Chris, thank you for a disciplined humanistic discussion about a very difficult subject : institutional racism. None of us think we are racist, but we are inculcated in social, political and economic systems that benefit majority/minority and exclude minority/majority populations from capital, opportunity and advancement. Your ideas and responses show that minority/majority communities can define/regain their own agency, reduce systems and polices informed by racism, and create new futures that could possibly scale to civic systems that help every person reach their potential.
It is real
Amazing presentation

John Gerty, Class of 1973 The environment you are graduating into is perhaps the most challenging one college graduates have ever faced. What you have likely received through the Institute of Design is a mindset informed by curiosity combined with an intellectual resilience and flexibility which will help you to meet the challenges of this weird new world. You are about to find out how quickly fifty years can pass. Congratulations and good luck.
So much love to this graduating class, in particular my foundie students from Product Design. I wish I could have been there with you in Chicago this spring, but what do you know, I had to work a closing shift at the meat department of a grocery store in Florida because that’s my pandemic life now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Parabéns Luciano, você é muito especial!!! Vitória!
Congrats!!
Bless this man!
Caaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiin!
A wonderful tribute to one who contributed to the design world as a giant
Terry's work is an inspiration. Excellent presentation and talk.
I wish all the videos were this good! Great job! (that is me at the end. you can see my whole talk on my channel)
What a pleasure it was to work with Dale on Thinkering Spaces. I think of him and his quiet, steady, inspirational leadership and determination so fondly. My deep condolences to Connie.
We will miss him. Ingenious and insightful. One of the greatest ambassadors of the school and the science.
One of the best Professors / Advisers I've ever known
This video was excellent. Really gets you thinking about the number of design challenges a psychology graduate student could also begin thinking of. Cheers, please continue posting these design videos it is an excellent resource!
