Feeding the Soul: A Collection of Recipes and Reflections by the Inmates of Dubai Central Prison
What does food mean to you? For the men
and women in Dubai Central Prison, food represents memories, love and hope.
The inmates share their favourite recipes
that serve as a reminder of the cultures
and communities we all belong to.
The project, called ‘From the Inside Out’,
stems from a long-term collaboration
with the Emirates Literature Foundation,
supported by Dubai Police and Dubai
Central Jail, which organises visits from
Dubai-based and international authors to
talk to inmates about books and the process
of writing.
Following a week of intense creative
writing workshops with a group of male
and female inmates, the resulting collection
of essays and personal reflections
were collated in the anthology.
The Emirates Literature Foundation’s
latest initiative is to help inspire the
inmates through cooking. Feeding the Soul
is more than a cookbook - it is a collection
of 30 recipes by 30 inmates that carry
a special place in their hearts. It is a tale
of hope and a homage to the power of
cooking to inspire passion and serve as a
reminder of the cultures and communities
they belong to.
The Foundation continues to work
with the Dubai Penal and Correctional
Institutions to help inmates connect and
find solace in literature.

Last year The Habtoor Grand with professionals in the field. This year in a tent focussed on background of authors rather than literary qualities. Mr. Ben Okri ranted his political message to the crowd, no beauty, no poetry, no literature. We left straight away and many with us. A dead end street, to be avoided.

Such an odd man. Writes as a black woman. Tells anecdotes that aren’t true. And makes fun of people unlike himself (women, sincere people, vegans…). And yet somehow has a reputation for being a symbol of kindliness.
He is a kind man and a promoter of joy. You seem to be a bitter snide sniper. And understand very little about creative writing. He does not write "as" a black women. That ridiculous idea comes from the brain-rot of "identity politics". He has created a character, whom he develops with great affection, giving joy to millions. Authors do not "write as" the characters they create.
Thank you oh great kind Paul Worthington for explaining things so well. You see all and know all and the world stands thunderstruck at your piercing observations and singular ability to illuminate complex matters. Keep it up, we all applaud you.
