Gord Gear Tips: Installing the IR back band and on the water review
Trying to get my Ripper 2 Large ready for the grand Canyon. I found the OG back band started to pinch me and become uncomfortable. 18 days on the water with this would be what I imagine as hell.

Zet Ninja with the Jackson Bee's Knees
zhlédnutí 587Před měsícem
I have been trying to find a way to give myself maximum height for my knees in the Zet Ninja. I love this boat's design and would hate for the lack of comfort to hold me back. I tried the Pyrahna thigh hookers which felt clunky and restricted how high my knees could be. I think this is the best solution.

I picked this up and am trying to install it. I think your solution with the bungees is spot on and I'm almost finished, but how the hell did you get the IR straps fed into the Pyranha thigh brace module? Did you shave any of the plastic down?
@@Christgoldberg I used my soldering iron to shave the plastic down on the IR strap down. This was an after thought.
That's what I was planning to do, but was curious what you ended up doing. I also went a slightly different route on the bungee. I stripped the bungees off the OG back band and ran them through the fabric loops on the IR, and just removed the ones that came with the IR. Not sure if it'll hold up.
nicely played boys
Thank-you kindly
Looks like a good solution. I put a Dagger backband in my Firecracker and like it much better than Pyranha’s.
Yeah a dagger anything would be great in a Pyrahna kayak lol.
Very nice kayak 😊👍
I have a ripper 2 and firecracker, and love both, but the back band gives me wicked hot spots on my back and was looking into this as an option. Sounds like it might be the ticket.
I am glad you stumbled across this. This definitely feels way better and doesn't rub.
I’ll have to keep an eye out for this in the UK. I love the Firecracker but wow is the back band ( with mods) shocking. Thanks for the review.
My pleasure 😊 happy to help make other paddlers boats better.
TOLDYA!!! Keep the bag for when you come back down east for a paddle - great for the blackflies ;-)
Oh boy black flies 😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@gordmccoll5009 The IR band and the Bees Knees turned my Firecracker 252 from a great boat to my flat-out all-around favorite boat. I run the height straps through the mod straps, as well as the backband straps - no height issues...but I stuck with the OG pyranha bungees. I agree completely, comfortable, and feels much less sloppy than the Pyranha band - much better engagement with the boat.
What's your size? Do you have skinny legs or thick legs. I have skinny legs and was wondering how that boat would fit me thanks Brad
I have Skinny short legs I found the OG thigh braces forced my legs in a weird position where they were straight but bent..... Hard to explain. I noticed people who are taller with longer legs don't seem to have an issue. Ultimately I installed the Bees knees and it's been perfect for me
Happy birthday 🎉 Sick video 🤙🏻
Thanks 😁
💕Wow🤍🤍🤍🤍🧡🧡🧡
That looks like a lots of fun!! 👍👍
Amazing footage, this looks like fun! In scene 2:16 I stopped the video and admired these mountains oO Thanks for sharing your adventure. :)
My pleasure 😁 glad you enjoyed it. I love these beautiful places we live so close too.
Hell ya brother! Looks like a amazing two days! Gets me pumped about my weekend, though it wont be quiet as action packed lol. Really want a rewind to make it more fun and challenging.
Gotta love being on the water 😊 yeah I love having a half slice in my quiver
@@gordmccoll5009 Best place to be! I have a Antix 1 but it's uncomfortable plus I've gained about 30 pounds since I use to use it. 186 in a medium plus it being uncomfortable is just too much. Wanting a new rewind do to the thigh hooks, everyone seems to love them.
Wooohooo! Happy birthday! Great run and seeing this make me somehow very confident, because I'm turning 40 this summer too :D.
Don't worry we got lots of time left to paddle 😁😁🙂

I’ve put them in my Mamba. Made a big difference
Put these in my firecracker, made the boat so much better, make any boat better is my guess
It's such a great option and easy to install
Nice review. I just picked up a used one and can’t wait to get it on a river.
It's a great boat I had a blast in it
I wish they would do something about the backband in this outfitting. I loved the Hot Whip but the back and was constantly slipping down under my ass…sorry…badinkidunk 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you! Informative review. Draw strokes, are super important, and are somehow less used than they should be by serious recreational whitewater kayakers. So I like that this paddle is perfect for them. I also like the straight shaft, but still with good tactile cues for orientation. This paddle looks almost perfect! I hope that they put out a more durable model.
Told ya! They saved the Firecracker for me ;-)
Great idea and easy to install
Nice 😊 Glad they are working for you.
And such a beautiful river!
Working great 😃
you have to try my liquidlogic "sweet ride"
Hell's yeah I do
Cheers for that! such a quick response. It seems the main difference is really going to come down to a paddlers preference
Yep 👍 I agree. The ninja has a manual bow which will require a paddler to utilize the stern loading to raise the bow. Reminds me of the Ripper 1 in that way.
"I did not expect to buy this boat that day.... here we are" 😂 classic! Congratulations Later that day, I'd get the "... honey is that a new boat?"🫣🙄 What is it replacing?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I wasn't expecting to be able to get the Indra until after the season due to availability. So I bought the ninja because I wanted a sporty creek boat. When I found out our local kayak shop had them in stock I jumped at the opportunity. I like the Indra more overall but the ninja has such an interesting hull. I am going to paddle both this season.
@gordmccoll5009 I picked up a jackson flow few weeks ago... I feel it's a bit wide, the Indra looks sweet & love dagger outfitting.. so 😮... im smedium. Looking to demo one when I can
I would be interested in your thoughts on how it compares to the Ninja
They are both fast and feel nimble. The Indra has better secondary stability. Both Stern's are made to be loaded and pivoted not for playful tailees. Another big difference is the bow rocker, the ninja has a low bow where the Indra has a bow rocker of 19 inches. The Indras outfitting is sooooo much better. I'll make a video comparing the two.
@@gordmccoll5009 thanks, agree on the outfitting. I am currently fitting custom hip pads to mine. Looking to tryout your mod for the thigh braces as well.
Great vid, Gord! Boat looks amazing!!!
Looks like it might pair up well with the supernova with its similar rails, whereas the rewind and code have quite soft rails. Looked like it surfed well for the sporty creeker class too.
Yeah blows me away how a boat this size can be so maneuverable and loose.
Nice little review, how did you find these in relation to the Galasport Manics, they seem a very similar design philosophy
Thanks 😊 They are very different. The GalaSport Manic seems super geared towards slalom and racing. It gives you power when in the vertical position but lacks when it's not, especially if you are doing the sweep. The lettmann provides power no matter how you orientate the blade.
Damn, those blades look massive! Great review, Gord. You should try to get an Arca Vulcan in your hands - love mine!
Those look very interesting 🤔🤔🤔
Very nice review! We are very close in weight and I think we've had a very similar experience. The only reproach I have about the R2L is that there is not that much tail rocker when you look at the full lenght of the waterline (for example less that the R2 medium) so I find myself stern taping a lot on rocky boofs. I'm also a bit concerned because of that and the thinness of the tail tip to take it on the steeper creeks we have in Quebec. I'm waiting on a medium ReactR next month, I'm not entirely sure which place the R2L will have in my line-up vs a more sporty/playful half-slice at that point
Thanks, yeah that's a very good point. I really like its ability to play for how capable it is. I am actually getting rid of my medium Ripper 2 because it's not as fun as the large. I will be using a ninja as my creeker this season and see what people have to say about the reactR before I get it. The Indra also has my attention.
Wish I thought of that. I lowered my seat and I loved the boat, just couldn't sit in it comfortably. I traded it for a scorch🔥. Now I'm going to have to sit and wonder what could have been😞. Loved the way the Ninja paddled!🥷
Awwww I am sorry to hear this. Such a great boat, I wasn't willing to give up on this. The Scortch is a good boat. The reactor is looking promising
Same I lowered my seat and sawed the thigh braces way down still couldn't sit in it so I traded for a ripper 2
Nice! I always do the back-band mod, although I'm considering trying an IR in my Firecracker. Because the seat pan is deep at the back, I form cut some 1/2 foam to level it a bit more. The single biggest improvement in comfort and performance that I got out of the Firecracker, due to its higher knee position, was taking out the Hookers and modding in a set of Jackson Bees Knees - more leg padding, and I can widen my knees to the extent I want.
Interesting 🤔🤔🤔 love the hybrid outfitting solutions
Of course Pyranha drops their new boat on the same day as I watch this video and it has new outfitting. I know it is popular to complain about Pyranha outfitting I find their outfitting solid and reliable. You helped me do the back band adjustment on my Ozone. I found that I didn't need to do it on my Scorch. Thigh hookers are a must. Paddling a boat without them feels weird now. Give me Pyranha's outfitting over Jackson's any day of the week. But I'm old and I still have a boat that has no back band just a hunk of foam for the back and Yakima racks for foot pegs.
I am so glad it helped you 🙂 Thigh hookers are game changers. I asked Pyrahna if their new outfitting will be in other boats and they said no. It will only be in the reactor and the new playboat
I’ve got these mods on my Firecracker and Scorch. I have no idea how people paddle without thigh hookers or the back band mod. I personally don’t take the three bolts out, I just dive in upside down :D The other mod I find really useful is drilling a hole in the end of the strap and putting a knotted power cord through it to stop them slipping out when getting out.
I could not paddle these boats without them. Especially in my Ripper 2 large. Haha nice I'll try diving in upside down next time. That's smart with the power cord.

I keep my Lettmann Nitro in a paddle bag when on shuttle or anything but in the water. Getting bounced around in the back of a truck can scrape & chip it more than rocks- if you're cognizant on shallow stuff. I would also note that even if you break it, you usually only have to replace half of it due to it being a 2 piece.
Thanks Jack for your input, I agree 💯
Great review thanks. I’m hoping I’m not going to regret waiting for new Werner Stealth, I’ve been so close to ordering the Lettmann, but I borrowed my buddies Surge the other week for the day and instantly loved the blade forward design and taken a punt that the Stealth will be even better 🙈
Let me know what you think 🧐 I am hoping to get my hands on one for a review soon.
Also got to love that blade forward design
ever try a gala? the first time you use one feels rediculous
Try the Lettmann Nitro if you like forward offset.
@@beenwithalowercaseb19 I took one look at the blade and was scared of popping my shoulder. I’m assuming it’s a beast?
Thanks for the review, that was good feedback. I had a chance to try the paddle at a pool session and found it really nice to use. I've been considering getting one for a while now. I may have to bite the bullet and get one.
My pleasure to share my feedback. You won't regret it. 😁
Some snow, some stern, and some Stapleton...what's not to love ;-)
Hell's yeah Brotha 😂😂😂
Cool review! What drysuit is that, would you recommend it?
I am wearing the NRS Jackal. If you are looking for a dry suit that is super durable then yes. It has cordura reinforced forearms and knees. It is definitely more expensive.
@@gordmccoll5009 awesome thanks. It must be good if you’re still paddling while there’s ice forming on your paddle 😂
I clicked on this because I use a Galasport canoe paddle for whitewater C1. It has been excellent and around 10 years in the durability has been excellent. The material looks like your Manic paddle. Two enthusiastic Canadian thumbs up!
This is great to know 😊 Nice to meet you Eh!?? 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
Thanks for posting this. I had a orig ripper Lg and ended up shelving it since I couldn’t dial in the edges and then sold it (I’m used to the softer 9R edges). Is the ripper II Lg more user friendly vs the orig ripper Lg? I’m abt 185lbs 6’1” I’m also considering the LL Sweet Ride -thanks
I would say it is way more user friendly than the OG Ripper Large. It's way more stable and less grabby. You are in the perfect weight range for the large if you want it to be almost an all river boat. Wade Harrison has a good review on it too and he is around 185 pounds.
@@gordmccoll5009 thanks -cheers
Gord, thank you for the review! The river video was awesome! It was fun to hear the giggling while you were on the water. Please keep sharing your experience, we are very interested to hear what people like and recommendations for improvements. Hey Jason it was my pleasure. A friend of mine is traveling to France for paddling and he'll be taking this paddle. I am really curious what he will think. Will definitely share any feedback I hear.
