    Reporting in subscriber number 950. Thank you for doing such an amazing job preserving history and sharing it to the world. Its a shame that Australia insists on destroying so many firearms, since 1996 the number of killings has stayed the same as before the gun ban but the number of stabbings have quadrupled, trading one hell for another won't fix the problem. We have a mental health crisis in Australia and throughout the western world but people would prefer to point at the gun and claim thats the source of the problem when a gun is a tool in the individuals hand capable of great good and great evil. Im just an American living in Australia, i love this country i love the people and culture but it feels like some just want to systematically eliminate such a prize aspect of the Aussie culture which is the rifleman's culture. Well done good sir for saving this beautiful piece of history.

    I know Dave is not active on the channel any more but I'm going to comment anyway. I am from Durban, South Africa, and my family used to visit relatives in Pretoria every December holiday when I was a kid. I remember seeing Majuba many times from the backseat of our car as we traveled up the N1 between Durban and Johannesburg. So I knew about the first Anglo Boer war from an early age. However, I've never seen such a well researched and presented video on it as this one. I learned much more about it in the last 20 minutes watching than I'd ever known before in my life. A fantastic effort on Daves part. However. I'm going to throw out there for anybody who chances upon this and might be interested that this was not in fact the 1st Anglo Boer War. It was the 2nd. The 1st was the conflict that took place in 1842 entirely within the bounday of what is today the city of Durban. It didnt' last as long as this conflict, nor the 3rd Anglo Boer War 1899 - 1902, but it was none the less the first actual clash of arms between the Boers and the British and now essentially completely forgotten.

    At 3:04 your video shows a receiver stamping on the 'Mare' rifle that reads, '......Loewe & Co.' That would suggest an English-language stamping from a German factory to an Afrikaans-speaking nation? My Chilean M95 is similarly stamped, in Spanish, from Loewe. The Boers were incredibly proud of their newly established written language. Can you explain the.....'& Co'? In Afrikaans it would be spelt 'en Kie'. (Ek praat Afrikaans).

    Starting to watch these excellent videos again since returning from my recent Boer War trip. Did the "Hands Uppers" receive medals for their service with the British forces?

    • @petercollingwood522
      @petercollingwood522 Před 3 měsíci

      The Hands Uppers didn't serve with the British as such. They simply surrendered and were supposed to have "taken parole" where they agreed not to take part in any further hositilities. The scouts who co-operated with the British would most likely not have been eligable. There was one I believe who tried to claim both a Boer and British medal. I believe he was unsuccsessful.

    The Boers were men who were hunters and marksmen. More than enough match for the British Tommy in those days.

    Just curious if the Guedes has butterfly like inspection stamps on the barrel bands and receiver? I'm doing some research into the Portguese M1886 kropatschek bayonet, originally designed for the guedes. It has this marking like a double sided 3. It's also on the Kropatschek rifle. It's not on other steyr rifles or portugese rifles of the period. It has me stumped for now

      I only have one Guedes left in my collection. There are no markings on the B-Bands. Regards, Dave G.
