'13-'17 RAM New & Improved Back / Rear Seat Mod!!
zhlédnutí 174KPřed 7 lety
An in-depth instructional video showing how I modified the rear factory seat in my 2015 RAM 3500 Tradesman to fold down, whereas from the factory, the rear seat back is fixed and not allowed to fold, exposing extra storage behind, or a secret hiding place!
Great tutorial. I'm going to give this a try. Thanks!
Thank you sir! Nice idea and I will give it a try.
Thanks. Great info.
Buy a impact my guy
“Don’t compromise safety” Doesn’t torque seat/seatbelt bolts.
it is easy to go to the hardware store and buy new bolts that are 3/4" longer when you raise the seat. that is what i am going to do. no cutting necessary.
where did you get them seat covers ?
coverking.com/collections/kryptek-seat-cover
You know you don’t need to remove the bolts all the way out right? Loosen them nearly all the way out and you can lift the seat high enough to complete the rest of the work needed.
By the time I figured out the process, I had already gotten that past that point. But that is a good tip for anyone that hasn’t started yet! Thank you
perfect. someone should sell a short hook kit for this. thanks
Can u do mine??? Lol
Thank you Tex
Thank you Tex
Happy to help!!
Worked like a charm for my 2019 Ram Classic. Thank you
Glad to hear it brother! Enjoy! Thanks for posting
Heehee
Once you get the seats unbolted and off the hooks you can bolt them back in with the back in the down position then just keep trimming the hooks until the seat goes all the way back and locks in. Then since everything is already bolted back in your done. On my 09 1500 quad cab i had to trim all the way past the white piece and a Dremel tool helps you round it off nicely to it pops back smoother. I did enough to where it needs some force to pop back and forth but i would rather it not come forward unless i really want it to.
Touché sir! I think you’re right. That’s a really good tip going forward! Thanks for sharing
@@texmorgan9703 it makes it so you dont have to pull the seat all the way out of the truck. I also used a hack saw right above the plastic squares to take off the bulk of the metal and the dremel to fine tune it. With the seat bolted in it doesn’t move everywhere when your going at it with the hack saw
Rusty Shackleford...."king of the hill" reference. Lol
For all those asking this worked on my 2021 Bighorn
Woohoo! Glad it worked out & thanks for sharing.
Did this on my Rebel. Works great and gives you more storage...
Glad to hear it worked out for ya! Hope you enjoy the space
(havent done mine yet) 17 laramie 2500 - just in case you over cut , is there a way to replace the hooks, or is a one shot mod?
I believe it should be an easy & cheap replacement. I actually over-cut slightly on one side and lost the white spacer piece. I think that would be worst-case-scenario, but I was able to epoxy it back into place easily and no more rattle. But yes, if desired, should be a simple part to replace.
I have seen other similar videos but no one, absolutely no one explained in the level of detail that you did. This is the best video I have seen and I will use your video this weekend to finally solve the mysteries that I have. Leaking air vent and 3rd brake light leaking. Gotta change out that carpet underneath the seat not because it stinks. I scrubbed the fabric off and it still stinks.
I’m glad to hear it helped, or will help (hopefully). I’m also sorry to hear about the leaks and musty carpet! I sure hope this allows you to get to those areas! Don’t replace the carpet till you fix those leaks! I’m sure you already knew that though, lol. Good luck!
@@texmorgan9703 Hey Rusty, man it worked. My hooks were metal so I took a Sawzall and cut 1 inch off. 3/4 wasn’t enough when I tested it so I marked it during the test to cut just enough and have plenty of material left to have to sturdy hook. I have the Big Horn package that’s problem why. Cab vents were okay so I am going to test the leak with a water hose to see where the leak is and fix it. I’ve already silicone the heck out of my 3rd brake light. I will test it tomorrow. Thanks for all your help!!!
@@Mgezee that’s great news! Glad it helped. Best of luck with your leak, and your new space!
Works like a top, thanks Rusty took 30 mins to complete.
Woohoo!!! I love a success story!
Wouldn't it just be easier to unbolt the seat rear bolt so as to allow to lift the seat from the hooks, then shave off an inch of hook and re-bolt the rear bolts? Same end result.
Hmmm, without looking at it, I can’t remember if the seat would pivot with only removing the rear bolts. You might be right though, not sure. Thanks for sharing, and if you try it, let us know how it turns out.
@@texmorgan9703 upon removing the bolts, the hook design isn't really one that you would want to cut. I ended up just installing the washers
@@texmorgan9703 After doing the mod myself, cutting the hooks was NOT the way to go as they have plastic insulators designed to eliminate rattles, simply cutting them back would ruin the insulators, one inch of flat washers IS the best route to take, I stand corrected.
Thanks Rusty. I have a 2018 Ram 3500 and followed your advice and modified my back seat by cutting off each hook even with the white plastic. I put a damp towel on the seat back and used my right angle grinder with a cut off wheel, no fire danger, no metal shavings where i didn't want them. It took only a couple minutes on each side to make the cut and bevel the leading edge. I used black electricians tape and wrapped the end of the white plastic twice to secure it to the metal hook. This was necessary because the plastic can now slip over the edge and hang up the seat back. I did not have to cut off any more of the hooks, the seat back locked perfectly when i brought the seat up to 45 degrees and released just as easy doing it all in reverse. Now i have this great place to hide things that sometimes need to be hidden. Its unlikely that anyone who has not read this posting would know how to release the back.
That is awesome to hear! Glad it worked out for ya. Thank you for sharing!
Cut 3/4 inch off seat attachments and seat still will not clear latches, at full height bracket still hangs down about another 3/4 inch. I have a 2016 dodge ram 1500 5.7L quad cab
So, when you say “at full height”, you mean as you’re lifting the seat up, about the halfway point where the bracket/lock is at its highest point of travel, before it drops back down? How long is that dang hook on yours, total? If you cut enough off to clear the locking bar/post, how much would be left?
@@texmorgan9703 yes
@@johntugwell957 So how much would be left after you cut enough to clear?
@@texmorgan9703 I would be above the white plastic that goes around bracket
@@johntugwell957 hmmm. That way different than mine. I can’t share pictures in this thread, but I’d be happy to try to help via email if you’d like
Good job that’s a great hack will do on mine
If that truck flips upside down those seats will fail.
All you had to do is put a 1in spacer under your boat that's it
1in spacer under my boat? Are we on the same video?
@@texmorgan9703 sorry man 1in spacers under your bolts where you Bolt the seat to the body then the seat will lock-in place and you can get it to unlock to fold down you did not have to cut them
I was told that all you need to do is unscrew and flip over the post/bars on the rear wall to get the seats to fold down. Does anyone know if this is true?
Thanks for the info! I sense a new ham radio location in my truck's future. One question, is the seatback still secured in its upright position when the bottom is folded completely up? Or will it want to fold down? I am hoping that the only time the seatback folds down is when the bottom is at that 45-degree angle.
Hey there, thanks for watching! If you take your time, and don’t shave TOO much off, you’ll end up with a finished product that will easily do both, fold forward or lock upright. Even if you take a little too much off, it’ll still lock upright, it’ll just be a little tricky to get the locks back in their groove to lock. It’ll make more sense when you get in there. But, to answer your question, yes it will lock in the upright position as well as fold down.
Very clever.
Great video!! Thanks alot. Will be doing this real soon!!
Trying this out tomorrow! Have ever had trouble getting that seat bottom to come up all the way? Mine only comes up halfway sometimes
I haven’t had that problem, so I can’t really say why or how to fix it. Maybe trash in the hinges? Or blockage of some kind? Let me know how it goes though! Best of luck!
2012 RAM 1500 took about 20 minutes even going slow. Best video out of all.
Great job I’m gonna do this to my quad cab
Honestly the spacer idea isn't bad, they just need to pick up some longer bolts while at the store. I'll probably end up doing this since it costs nothing but time
Great video! I have one question, will the seats stay folded up with the back vertical while driving? I like to leave the back seat flipped up behind the driver seat for storage but would also like to do this. I am assuming with the seat flipped up the back will fall forward? Thank you.
Yes sir, it will lock in the up position, as long as your model does that now. Hope that makes sense.
Does it still stay up if you just want the actually seat to lift up and stay? Or does it fall forward?
It still does everything it did before the mod. So, if your seat locked in the up position, this mod won't change that. The rear locks will slide free of the tabs, allowing the opportunity to fold the back down, or if you don't fold it down, the locks will slide back into the tabs like normal. That is, if you take your time and don't shave too much from the locking bars, as explained in the video. I can see where that would possibly cause issues.
@@texmorgan9703 ok thank you..I have a 2017 2500 tradesman with the same seat as you and as of now the back dont move. I'll see if the bottom seat locks in the up position before trying this. Thank you for the quick response!
Dustin Rust, great! Best of luck! Hope it helps
Really brilliant!
Very helpful! Thanks man!
They make longer screws you know dugh
True, but would you trust them with your children's lives? Maybe? I didn't wanna take that chance with mine, hence the entire purpose of making this video, as mentioned multiple times throughout.
Great stuff!!!
Did anyone else yank on those child sit straps thinking that might be the release for the top to fold down. I don’t have children, so. 😂
Unfortunately, they do not release squat. They're safety latches only. That would've been too easy!
I’ve seen a video where a guys hides an AR15 back there.
Thank you for this video! I just did mine and it took me 20 minutes, including rounding up the tools and putting them away!
That's great to hear! Hope it helps you in the future
You sir are a genius! I love my ram too!.
ROFL! Well that's a first! Been called a lot of things, but dunno bout that one! Thanks Ramon, hope it helped. Take care of that Ram, and she'll take care of you!
Grinding the material would effect the integrity of the metal. The spacer is much safer mod. Just buy the same grade bolt just longer sir. Would not recommend this mod
All opinions are encouraged & appreciated. I respectfully disagree, but ya know what? That's okay! At least we have some options. Thanks for sharing
@@texmorgan9703I have seen many responses to many statements and this one is probably one of the classiest and honest responses out there.
Hell I wonder if this will work on an '05, they've had the same cab and seats as far as the folding goes since '03 so I bet it will. Trying this out for sure, will keep you posted if it works on the 3rd gens, thanks.
Please do keep me posted. I think you're right, my last Ram was an '04 and I'm pretty sure the seats, or at least the lock-in and folding style, were the same. Hope it works! Good luck!
How did you get the bottom to lock when you lifted it up
Well I can't speak for all models, but mine will "click" when I lift the seat bottom all the way up/back, and locks in that position. I'm not sure exactly what is happening mechanically to lock into place, because all it takes to return the seat to the down position, is to simply pull the stowed seat bottom down/forward. There is a slight lifting motion in the seat as it comes forward. I should note that after the mod, I have to hold the seat back during this process to keep it from coming forward as well. Nice to have options finally! I hope this helps answer your question.
Awesome!! I will definitely be doing this!! Can you still fold the bottoms up and they still stay up?
Yes, at least mine do. Locks up in place like normal. Hopefully yours will do the same! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Can you post pics of how you mounted a few rifles back there please
James Oberlin , while unfortunately I can't provide personal pictures of rifle storage, I can give you some links to examples of my original plan. I currently use the new space as storage room for misc items, like a tool bag, muck boots, rain gear, a jump-start pack etc. I've found that I typically have little passengers in the backseat and, while the space behind would be great for hiding weapons, in my case, they would not be readily accessible unless I hurl my children from their seats. The following links are some EXAMPLES of mounting options for both pistols & rifles. I AM NOT endorsing any of these products as I have no experience with any of them.
