A pretty church on the A 7 between Carlisle and Longtown. opened in 1870, designed by Carlisle architecrts with pulpit, organ and desk made in Durham. Looked after and still funded by the small and mostly aged congregation. An interesting motif is painted between the lights on the chancel. Any ideas ?

A pretty cotemporary church with a good congregation. It has a social hub with many community activities. The staff are friendly and approachable. The church has an interesting French priest whose previous post was at St Wilfrids in Westerhope in the nearrby estate which I covered previously. He does some very topical and well researched sermons. I thought over his microphone at times that he w...

In the village of Whalton to the west of Newcastle and Ponteland lies this interesting church. Hidden away off the main road its well worth a visit especially with their guide to show how its been completely 24520690remodelled several times since the 1300s and has an interesting Mllennium piece.

A shorter video than normal and unfortunately not much of the interior to see as I was trying to avoid filming the large congregation ! Also at the end clips of the nearby methodist church now up for sale.
A Tale of Two Churches; Murray Parish & Claremont Parish Churches East Kilbride

Both of similar design but by different architects these 60s designs in East Kiklbride show the differing situations that churches end up in. This is one of the reasons I do these videos to highlight the decline not only in congregations but in Christian architecture, which I record for future prosperity whilst other faiths continue to flourish.
Ruthwell Parish Church & The Ruthwell Cross

In the village of Ruthwell near Dumfries is a small church that contains a fabulous Anglo Saxon worshipping cross. 5.5 metres or 18ft high it depicts biblical iconography and inscriptions in both Latin and Runic. The church was especially adapted to house this religious monument.

In Govan Glasgow (where Rab C Nesbitt came from) lies Govan Old Church. Taken over by a chartable trust its a museum as well as a place of worship. Usually only open in the summer, theres much refurbishment constantly going on. Due to this, the exterior dosnt show its internal grandeur as much. Inside its amazing with fabulous archiecture and stained glass and also houses various neolithic and ...

Interestingly, this is the longest parish church in Scotand. It also rescued a pre-raphaelite window by Edward Burne-Jones from Torquay. It is alo probably one of the best recent major church refurbishments using new materials.

Thank you!
Beautiful place.
Slow the camera down! Let viewer get a good look. A little history of names on the walls. It is a nice well maintained Church. Next time take a walk among headstones and get a few names and dates.
What a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing. 👏👏👏
I went to the adjacent high school there in the 70s. We used to get frog-marched down to the church on many occasions. Best bit about it was the acoustics. We used to have farting contests and laugh our heads off, while wee Mr McVittie ran around trying to sniff out the culprits 😂🤣😂
Watching from the Rocky Mountains, Colorado USA. Thanks for sharing this.

That opening music gets my endorphins spinning my friend. Can I add that I very much appreciate the explanation. All too often our kind of sites leave the viewer wondering what they saw. Hats off to you !!
It's really interesting that wherever you go in these isles, design and architecture may vary from place to place, but the essential fabric of these wonderful buildings remain the same. That chancel arch would not look out of place wherever you may travel in the country. Thank you very much for sharing.
Watching from Colorado, USA. Thank you for posting.

Very nice to see!
I enjoyed this video immensely, from Colorado USA. nee Kelley
Going to do the Bewcastle cross shortly which is similar, thanks for watching
Thank you for sharing. Ive just subscribed to your channel. Top job 👏👏👏
Might have a cold but the narration could have been a bit better and the first priory was sped up too fast comppared with the later two !
My dad was a preacher in the mid 1970s, he also had Terregles church as well. Interesting video. Obscure for sure. A shame about the state of the church at Lochrutton as I obviously remember it when it was still used.
Smashing upload...keep them coming..👍👍

Fantastic episode. Top job. 👏👏👏 I've just subscribed to your channel.
Next time you visit a church make an effort to find out how to get in. No directions from the Town! The Roman fort is to the left as you enter the gate. Detail of some of the graves might have been interesting...you missed that. All in all, virtually useless.
Great video. We have a similar passion obviously, loving these fabulous buildings. Keep up the fabulous work. Opens my eyes to a different part of the country. Well done.
We are three already!
Thanks, love youre work too !
It was lovely to have you both!
Thnks, will pop along again soon :D

Some lovely masonry work there as well as a wealth of period architecture. I particularly enjoyed the late Victorian carved reredos and pulpit of Caen stone. I would imagine a great sense of tranquility. Thank you.
Hartburn Glebe I did earlier is interesting, I really wanted t do the glebe ad church together. Fascinating to go into some churches. I am trying to revisit get access to some others that were closed when I first visited them. I enjoy youre channne land you have a much better voice and skill at narration than me. Ialso do modern churches where I find some of the architecture and interiors fascinating. Thanks for watching.
Glad you enjoyed it
Again...... Can't understand 90% of what this guy is saying, or trying to achieve...
It would be nice if we could understand what the narrator is saying. I couldn't understand a word..............

Greetings from NW WA State 🌲🇺🇸🌲. I am happy to leave the very first comment here. I just discovered your channel. i chose St Aidan’s because of iruined Tower. I love English history and especially ancient country churches. but I do not know much about the North of England..This place is certainly remote and the sweeping views are breathtaking. The audio is a bit choppy. Thank you for the captions. Hopefully more information about the ruins will turn up. There is a story here, waiting to be uncovered. The stone archway is beautiful , and i wonder if the project was started but never finished?
Thanks for the comment. This channel deals with the area between the two Roman defensive walls which covers the Scottish English border and the lower Scottish counties as well as the English counties of Northumberland, Cumbria and Durham. Northumberland is sparsely populated due to wars between Scotland and England, cholera epidemics and the Border Reivers in the past. Also the terrain is quite hilly and mountainous in places. The four main conurbations are Newcastle Upon Tyne, Carlisle, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Keep watching as we accidentally found some amazing religious sites. More links of interest for you maybe the tourist board websites for those counties, English Heritage, its Scottish Equivalent and the National Trust websites.
What a nice church and its so good to see its pews haven't been removed which sadly seems to be the fate of many churches these days. Thanks for a great video.
My ancestors came from that part of the world 300 years ago.
became a Christian at Mitford thank God
It really is a beautiful church. Thank you for your comment. It inspires me to know that hopefully people will be drawn to faith through admiring the beauty of houses of worship.
I found this channel last year and watched and enjoyed some of your videos. Unfortunately I was then unable to watch for a while and stopped getting notifications. I intend to catch up now that life is slightly more 'normal'. I think the project is very valuable and deserves wider support. Thanks- and all the best in 2024.
Thanks and all the best to you too :D
I went in this church, I remember there's a hillfort with it's statue of a guy who did a lot for the village. Going out of Brampton there is the site of the Hanging Tree where six Jacobite soldiers were hanged. In the village is the Moot Hall with leg stocks. I went on to Lannercost Priory, Bewcastle Cross and Hermitage Castle.
Thats what I like to hear, interesting stories around the churches. I have more episodes coming shortly both of old and newish religious architecture. Hope you subscribe as I try to produce an episode every week :D
@@kawaiibeauty2922 Thank you, I'll keep watching.
Lanercost Priory is not far from here - another interesting structure in this part of the north, with a backstory to match.
Done it in an earlier video but my earlier attempts are worse than this one but I hope I'm improving ? Hope you stick with the channel ?!
How lovely. Would so love to see that in person.

unsure of what you mean ?
Interesting little church, thank you.
Beautiful old church. Interesting graveyard. Beautiful tomb, still in fairly good condition. Interesting video, thank you very much.
Used to know that bit of road very well- had forgotten how nice Longhorsley was.
Love Chillingham and well remember 'finding' this church and the extraordinary tomb in it. A good 'walk round' thanks.
Excellent again, thanks.
Great to see places I haven't been able to get to for some time- and a few I'm definitely going to get to as soon as I can.
