Hi there! Welcome to our channel! Our names are Cecilia, Ellie, and Raina. We made this channel in 2015 as a fun activity while we shared a room. We don't update it much now, but we check back sporadically, so feel free to leave comments and questions!
CHINA DORM TOUR || Study Abroad Chengdu
I studied in Chengdu, China with University Studies Abroad Consortium (usac.edu) in Fall 2019 and here's my dorm!!
I lived in the international dorm at Xinan Minzu University (西南民族大学) on the same floor as the other USAC students, and honestly the dorm situation was incredible. Obviously, there were differences from western dorms (mainly the shower I guess?), but we had western toilets, good plumbing, and heating/ac units in each room. I lived on the eleventh floor, but there were two elevators (which almost always worked). We were also right next to the campus east gate, which was super convenient for going to the subway, catching a bus, or heading to McDonalds ;)

Best part of college in Tuscaloosa is the accessibility of some pretty awesome cities. We had a three day weekend at the beginning of April, so ten of us headed down to Louisiana. We stayed at my roommate Hannah's home (her parents and siblings were so kind to us) and explored downtown Baton Rouge. Also day tripped to Nola, where we explored the French Quarter and I took a few hours to hang out...

Hello, I wanted to know if you would know the COVID situation or like how the university is handling the pandemic when you were there? I'm also interested on going to the same Program hopefully for Fall 2021. I'm excited but also very anxious about making any final decisions in terms of the how the classes goes or how helpful the program was. Thank you!
I'm not sure! I left last December, just before COVID. I know my friends all got sent home in January, but I'm not sure what the plan is for future semesters from either the University or as far as China's visa rules. I loved the program! The classes are interesting but not too difficult. I learned a lot, especially in my Mandarin class!

would you reccomend staying in the internation dorms or the apartments with chengdu usac? I’m trying to work on my mandarin mostly for this program and thought that an apartment would make it easier to learn mandarin quicker.
So if you live in the apartments, you'll probably still be with other American roommates and your neighbors will mainly be Chinese faculty. Only four out of the 30+ of us stayed in apartments, and they liked the apartments but I don't think they had much impact on language acquisition. However, apartments did make it more inconvenient to hang out with other USAC students, which might be good if you're looking to force yourself to find Chinese friends lol.
@@ThreePeas What did you end up doing for banking? I have a credit card that doesn't have foreign transaction fees, would that work? Anything else you recommend knowing before departing?
@@loganryan5478 Yeah that for sure should work. Here's the deal with China though: only a few atms accept western cards and basically zero stores accept card. So basically we all ended up withdrawing the max amounts whenever we went to the atm ($350 I think) to minimize atm fees. Some of my friends used only cash all semester, but I opened an account at a Chinese bank so I could use WeChat pay and other apps (I would recommend opening an account, the USAC advisors help). Still had to withdraw cash from my card at the atm and then go deposit it at a different bank where I held my account.

I really loved Chengdu! It's famous for being a relaxing and very gardenous city, and I found this to be so true! The nearby mountains were also beautiful. After doing a good bit of travel in China, Chengdu remained one of my favorite cities, along with Kunming. The only downside is the Sichuan accent can be difficult to understand coming from classical mandarin.

Hi Vanessa! I know this is way delayed, but for anyone else reading the comments: On a student visa in China, you can set up a Chinese bank account. This is what I did, and then I linked my Chinese bank account to WeChat. That said, I did have friends who managed with just cash. You can even book Didis (Chinese Uber) with just cash...although the drivers don't love this. Credit cards are almost nonexistant in China and you have to go out of your way to find somewhere that accepts them.

this is my first time to china! I've been to southeast asia before, as well as Europe. On this trip, I'm going through New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand, and then the rest of the time in China :)
I don’t remember if you said this or not but do not forget makeup remover.
I would recommend a back pack that does not open from the back so no one can slip something in there without you noticing. You can also use a back pack that closes completely with a zipper and lock 🔒 it closed.
I would take some cloth face masks to protect your lungs from the pollution-the kind that hook behind your ears and cover your mouth and nose. They're also good for public transportation and anywhere else that is crowded, just to help stay healthy.
Didn’t age well
Why China? Do you speak Mandarin? I was trapped in Chengdu last August and its rain and humidity bothered me more than its dreary landscape. The noisy tunneling of metro stations around Sichuan university didn't help either. Yeah, Chengdu's rain was no joke. It rained almost everyday I was there. BTW, watch out for Chengdu's mosquitoes!!!
Dang, good to know to expect a lot of rain! I'm hoping my time in Alabama prepares me a little. :) I don't speak Mandarin (although I'm teaching myself a little this summer, but I know that won't make much difference before I go). I'm going to China because I wanted to use my opportunity to study abroad to go to a totally different culture, and I figure 1/7 of the world lives in China, so that might be a good one to understand! Were you in Chengdu for vacation?
OK, got it. Have fun! I was not there for vacation or the Panda. If it was up to me, I'd pick nicer places in China. Also don't expect random people you meet on the streets to speak English except some students and young people. My kindle was not working properly in China. Maybe it has something to do with Chinese IP address and Amazon cloud services between Amazon us and Amazon cn not working well together.
@@dejavu1377 I'm glad you mentioned the kindle thing! It did occur to me I should look that up...I guess I'll figure out how to get books on my kindle with a usb :)
@@ThreePeas She is right. To deal with the mosquito problem, buy a mosquito net. Take the umbrella with you wherever you go. If you are a foreign student in China, you can go to the bank to get a debit card, then you can use wechat or alipay to buy everything online. I won't be worried about the pollution that much because that has changed a lot.

Thx for the swimmer shoutout cause I’m a swimmer and I’ve been swimming year round for 5 years, summer swim for 9 years, but i learned to swim at 2 years old. I still get very tired and sore but it makes you stronger and swim is a sport that i love
