Organizing My Studio and Building a New Yarn Shelf
It's been a while since I've purged the studio and cleaned things up from the last few projects. A good cleaning was much overdue as was a good purge of the studio storage attic. Join me as I slog through boxes and boxes of reed to organize my basketry supplies, build a shelf for my yarn and fiber stash, sort through drawers, boxes and bags to clean up past projects, and generally overhaul the studio to clean it and make space in my brain.
This project has left me feeling fresh, tidy, and inspired to start creating things again. It's amazing how a good clean-out will freshen a space and make my mental space feel clear and free.
I hope you enjoy and feel inspired to do your own creative space clean out.

Any very pliable cordage would work great for this application. I imagine something like garden twine or jute would be too flimsy. But some type of twisted paper or natural cordage. Raffia, grapevine, kudzu come to mind.

But, I'm drawn the the triangular ones, and thought 2 pedals might be easier? I e been drawn to spinning wheels as long as i can remember, but only going to actually get one now. A castle wheel (2 pedal) is a good starter wheel because it's easier to control. I suggest you check out Revolution Fibers and look at the two pedal wheels. Select the one that you love the look of - Kromski is very traditional, Louet and Schacht are Scandinavian style to my eye, and Spinolution and Majacraft are almost space-age. revolutionfibers.com/TEXTILEINDIE Which wheel do you love the look of and which style will complement your home? All the wheels at Revolution Fiber will perform beautifully, it comes down to the aesthetic.

My grandaunt Peggy, who was also my next-door neighbor, had a spinning wheel. It was pretty old because it was made when her grandmother was a little girl. Peggy told me stories about it and showed me how to use it. Since I was a very little girl, I didn't quite pick up on it, but I was interested in the stories. Peggy died in May of 2003, at 78 years old. I was only 6 years old at the time. Now, I am 27 years old. If Peggy were still alive right now, she'd be 99 years old. I always tell my youngest brothers Jed, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, ages 20, 18, and 15, about Peggy. I even show them pictures of her. Peggy was Daddy's aunt. She was never married. She never had any children or grandchildren. She often babysat me and my little brothers. Jed, Isaiah, and Jeremiah, never got to meet her. I always used to visit Peggy from birth to age 6. Daddy even took the family to visit Peggy in the hospital. We also went to her funeral. Before Peggy died, she gave me and the family I live with her special spinning wheel. Now, it's collecting dust in the attic. It's so extremely old now.

That's a sweet story, thanks for sharing. A little dusing and oil and I'll bet that wheel works great. They were made to last. Let me know if you try it out.

Thank you for this tutorial. You explain the steps so thoroughly. I want to use 100% cotton muslin to imprint with fresh flowers with stems on for the design. Would the muslin be considered natural fabric and would this type of mordant preparation work for that?

Yes, cotton muslin is a natural fiber, and this preparation works great.
