What is the difference between a doorman and concierge? Isn't that the same thing? Maybe the doorman stands guard at the door of the building to screen people, while the concierge just sits at the desk? I don't know. Maybe doorman provide more security that concierge does?

They shouldn't be . they are the first line if protection for the people that live in the bldg. , and therefore pay his salary . he's not there to let every tom , Dick , and harry in to rip off the people who live there .

I did this 6 years ago! It was great pay but it wasn’t for me.
I worked as both a doorman and a porter in several buildings. Doormen get treated a lot better than porters. I'm currently a porter in a building I don't really like. The work itself isn't bad at all. But the tenants are assholes. Our job is to greet them, but we are always ignored or met with an eyeroll. It especially sucks seeing the doormen get treated like gold and you, the one who does all the real backbreaking work are treated like a dog. Actually, the residents treat their dogs better than they do us. Hope you found something else better that you like.
To the people who were there! This was and always will be the most inconic festival to start EDM! There will never be a line up again like Counterpoint 2012! Bassnectar, Skrillex, Pretty Lights, AVICII, Steve Angello, M83, Excision, Laidback Luke, Alesso, Crystal Castles, Big Boi, Zeds Dead, Ghostland Observatory, Wale, Big Gigantic, A-Trak, Atmosphere, Zedd, Feed Me, Lotus, Cookie Monsta, Mimosa, Super Mash Bros, and Knife Party along with so many more. But like I said there will never be a festival that could possibly beat this line up!

I'm not a people person. I worked as a doorman/porter for a little over a year. I couldn't take it anymore and ended up quitting. It wasn't for me. Being treated like crap isn't worth the money. Especially being a porter. Doormen get treated much better compared to porters.

I'm a Porter. We mostly get treated like crap and ignored. Depending on the building. The first building I've ever worked in had a majority of older tenants. We were treated very well. I currently work in a new building with majority of young tenants and most of the time we are not even acknowledged and are ignored when greeting residents; other times they'll roll their eyes at us. The doormen get treated much better. It's not a great feeling working hard, busting our backs(doormen don't do jack shit compared to us), and then getting treated like you're less than human. The residents treat their dogs better than they treat us, the human beings who keep their buildings clean, safe, and in working order.

Well I just became a doorman and wanted to know more about the profession from someone who did a first hand study...
Best advise would be to really get to know everyone in the building. While my friends building has many different doormen, they all know her face, name, apartment number, and even their friends and family. Be friendly!
