Always enjoy your channel... These Opals are so beautiful... Amazing colors.. Thank you for sharing
I'm so glad I found your channel. I've heard so many others say "53frogs" ... didn't realize it was you until this video... Cool stuff... I've seen people treat it before... I'm still learning and using very inexpensive stuff, but I've been watching too much on CZcams 🤣... Just finished up a 120 hour lapidary class... About to finally start learning about Opal... One on one with a professor 🤞
Welcome aboard!
I joined a lapidary club just to see if I enjoyed shaping opal... I do! I've been wanting the 6 wheel lapidary machine because I like to polish the gems and minerals I find. I do believe one of these would be nice to have "for opal only" Thanks for the breakdown.. Love the dog, I have two myself. HI-TECH seems to be a great idea.
The Hi-Tech machines are a great starting point for sure.
I don't see much boulder opal, but I really think it's beautiful. That I love freeform this seems perfect for me
Messy stuff to cut but I love the finished look.
So amazing...
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm going to try that from now on... I'm positive it's better than forcing it off.. thanks for the information
You can do it!
Excellent Opal... I can get lost in something like that... It's so deep and beautiful
Glad you like it
Ok so you are the Riley Gunn guy from 53 frogs ! dude you deserve more traction and subscribers, ive seen all the opal parcels you've sent the likes of Pulitzer, for my first ever opal purchase ill be using you, youre site under the jewellery section.
Thanks so much. Maybe some day the algorithm will warm up to me :)
Hi ! are you the guy Riley Gunn that pulitzer opal is always talking about ? as i love opal and been thinking to buy a pendant opal sometime but im scared who to trust and i know 53 frogs is trustworthy.
@@TheVorlon yup that’s me! We love the Colonel, he is good fun :)
I love it
Muy Thanks!
Im trying to make the switch from Agates to Opal.
Opal slightly softer and you have to learn to read the bars in a different but the shaping is all very similar. Be careful, opal is highly addictive!
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs I bought some Oregon Fire Opal to practice on. I find it similar to Obsidian. Im going to make a purchase from you someday but im trying to buy a home atm in the states. Probably going to fall threw so I might actually be able to buy opals instead of a house.
@@krackenagate5606 It is a good day when your rock hobby transitions from becoming liability to an income producing adventure. Maybe your opal buys you a house!
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs thats what i told my wife

Great video tutorial 😊
Thank you! 😊
Best vibes. I love the slant cabber. Thank you for all your videos.
Glad you like them!
I believe most arbor style gem cutters rotate at 1800-2000rpm, Rotary tools (dremmel) 5000-25000rpm on variable speed models or around 9-10k rpm on fixed speed.
Sounds a bout right. I know the pneumatic ones are on the upper side of that range.
Is it awkward to operate after being used to an arbor ?
There is a bit of a period where you need to figure out the angles but it's not as hard as writing with the other hand.
@nnOpals if it was that hard I would be lost.
@@FatKidBrody More like putting the fork in the other hand. :)
Great video. Excellent tips on angling. As a beginner, I made mistakes in that regard. One question: How are you removing the stone off the glued dop stick? I used superglue when dopping Ethiopian opal, and when trying to remove the stone, I chipped the surface of the cab that was glued to the stick.
Looks like youtube deleted my 1st post due to forgetting to put a space after a period smh... If you go to Opal Auctions and search "Optical Dopping Kit -LAPIDARY " there's a video showing the UV kit. At about 1min 5sec he removes a stone. It seems gummy, not a hard stick like super glue, but there is a slight pop. Might use a light to make sure there's no cracks where you attach the stone to the dop stick. Opal is 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale and shouldn't crack normally, but Ethiopian tends to have a bunch of cracks.
Put them into the fridge ❤
This one was stuck on just enough to keep it there. I easily just pulled it off with my fingers when I was done and then used a safety knife to rub the glue off. A safety knife is also handy to get the opal off if it is stuck on there really well. If optical glue pulls chips out of your opal, then the opal isn't prepared well enough to dop.
This is the way.
This only works when doping with wax. With the UV glue you can just pull the opal off or slice a safety razor between the opal and the dop.
Love your video's! We have progressed onto an 8 inch cabking machine a couple of years ago, but we did have the horizontal version of this machine before that. And strangely enough, I have bought the same slanted version that you are working on now again to augment my cabking for two reasons, to help with speeding up doing the flat backs of my cabs (I am still learning, but am cutting anything and everything, not just opal). The flat diamond lap that you put on the left hand side of the cabking just takes forever. It works, but not optimally. But also, the cabking only has that wee little 5/6 inch polishing pad on the right hand side, and it is also not optimal. But having had a leather pad there and using Linde-A there instead of the felt and diamond or Cerium, and seeing how amazing that cuts 90% of all different types of rocks, I am making up a leather pad to use on the slanted cabber, the advantage is that you can go from I think 800 rpm to 3500 rpm odd, so - if you wanted to follow Guru Sinkanka's advice to use Linde-A (premium Aliminium Oxide 100K grit equivalent) at high speed but moving very quickly for some of the undercutting type rocks, this should make it possible! Two things for the slanted cabber, I see you have figured out that the jump from the hard wheel to 325 is too big, and have invested in the in-between 225 (if I am remembering right) one. That is very necessary! But there is also another thing, if you are building up your own you should add in the foam backing that they sell to put in-between the soft diamond pads and the acrylic pad, it helps immensely in adding some "give" which helps sort out the domes by taking out facets much better. And one can do that with all the soft pads.
Thanks for the tip. I'll get a set of the sponges and give them a go to see how it changes the cutting/polishing. One of the reasons I think this is such a great starter machine is that even if you eventually upgrade there are a lot of things that it is just easier to do on a flat lap. Doublets/mosiacs/inlay work etc, all easier on a flat lap.
I have this exact machine! I love it! It’s the best. So awesome that you did this video! I had so many questions when I first considered buying it, this video would have helped me out a lot! ❤
Glad it was helpful!
Think the vevor gem cutters are the way to go to get into cutting cabs cheaply
Thanks! I'll look into this as an alternative. I've had really poor luck with Vevor kit in the past in terms of quality and longevity so hadn't really considered them as a real option. Is there a particular machine you recomend?
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs well I have heard good things about the KD-8801 model. However ive also heard bad things. I would think with cabs I can do it by hand using some wax and a wooden dowel and by eye by rotating upon the different laps until I'm satisfied with the look and then move onto polishing. I wanna get into faceting and gold and silversmithing as well. I got access to a lot of rough. The creek outback is loaded in quartz mostly a mix of milk and smokey quartz. I have found garnet and amethyst as well as a few other stones...most likely because its a glacial moraine deposit. Thinking 300-400 cabs would be enough for a nice ultratec v5 with the digital controls...from there its just learning the trades.
@@kingdarkem Right I think this Vevor kit you reference is much more appropriate for hobby faceting and maybe not so much for cabbing opals. I could be wrong. Just never heard of anybody having much success with this approach.
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs well if your interested I could document it when I get to it. Wont be till sometime after the new year. My busy season kicks off soon.
@@kingdarkem definitely let me know if you have any luck here cutting cabochons. Thanks!
I mounted a Dremmel 3000 to a small stand I built out of wood. It's held in place with pipe hangers, angled so I push against them. I have a kitty litter container with a spout and a fish tank siphon hose that leaks down onto the bit (Diamond Pacific nova/burr). There's a toothbrush screwed into a board that stops splatter, and I have a 3 inch mounted Magnifying glass/light to see and prevent debris from hitting me in the face. I use an adjustable speed Manicure tool to polish with cerium oxide. Works as good as an expensive machine on small stones for only a couple hundred bucks total (bit set is most expensive part). Necessity is the mother of invention. 👍
With that kind of mechanical mind you could just build yourself a proper bush arbour. Miners do this all the time out in the field to rub their finds and they have little more than a welder and some spare parts!
sounds a bit similar to my contraption.
@@ThatOpalGuy Nothing wrong with that! I think some of these designs can actually trump the retail version in that they can carry a lot more wheels and are easier to fix because they are more simple in their engineering. Problem is very few new players have the technical skill to pull it off I think.
Maybe put a dowel in the hole of the disc when applying the cutting disc to the base.
Definitely would If I had one exactly the right size.
PLEASE continue this series !! My 8" slant cabber has sat dormant for quite some time as there were no real opal shaping videos and I kinda gave up hope vs burning money on rough only to ruin it. Thank for this video!!
The Opal Mills uses a vertical cabber, pretty similar to the slant cabber. Phil makes great content too.
Will do! Cutting on a flat lap is a lot easier in some ways than on an arbour. I'm sure I will get used to the slant quickly an make some cutting videos to put it through the paces.
I really like his Wuttke and worked with Jason for month to try to get him up and selling but he had too much going on to focus on it seriously. Maybe someday would be a great business for him. Definitely a hole in the market for that kind of sturdy build at a competitive price point.
@@OpalAuctions53Frogs I remember that video. it is a great machine.

He has always mentioned you as being totally honest. Said your rough is selected with care. I'm not great with tech, but I'll try to contact you.
He's the best vendor on opal auctions.

@@ThatOpalGuy Oops. For a few items! LOL.
Many thanks for the kind words! I might be slightly more accurate to say that I source all types of different opal from the beginner to the very best and I am super clear about describing it and taking very accurate pictures and videos so everybody that wants to can take a measured approach to selecting just the opal they want.
@@nancycurtis7315 I mention it as much as I can.
Is this the same way you would treat rainbow matrix?
You can do it this way but the finish doesnt turn out very well. Better to resin coat it or stabilised with cactus juice or other uv stable resin in a vacuum chamber
